This is such a good song. It deserved a better battle. A final battle, full of stakes and emotion, where the heroes lay down their lives and some actually lose them. A battle where each of the heroes battle not only their opponents, but their own personal demons, and each find a way to succeed. One where the very foundation of the cruel system that has imprisoned them is shaken under their collective efforts, and it collapses among cries of joy and tears of relief. And in the end, a new world is built; one which will live and die by its own rules, one where they all can be free to live and finally start to heal. Or a frog flying through space for five minutes and a mess of unresolved plot arcs, that works too.

You know, it's almost like the final battle matched up with the events of Homosuck... As if in the little booklet that Caliborn read during when he first found the cartridge it read Act 6 Act 6 Act 6 as being part of Homosuck instead of actual homestuck....

Yeah...that's not what Homestuck is, though. People talk about characters dying, but really? All 8 human kids live, Calliope lives, and if we're counting sprites? Most of the trolls live. Aradia and Sollux in the dreambubbles, Tavros, Nepeta, and Equius as sprites, Vriska at LEAST until Act 7 (and the Credits would be weird if she were dead). Terezi, Kanaya, and Karkat. So if we're counting the A2, B1, B2, and C sessions? 18/21 survive (not counting Caliborn here). Homestuck's not really about the death, it's about rebirth and ascension. Having characters die in Collide wouldn't really...mean anything imo, Homestuck is far too "metafiction" for it to care about stuff like that. Would dying have really improved any of their arcs? Nah, and Dave touches on this pretty closely when he tells Rose they don't HAVE arcs. Viewing the comic as definitive closure for everyone isn't reading Homestuck the way it wants to be read, it wants you to see the characters as people who are now free to grow as people. Caliborn was railroading the sessions into an Alpha Timeline that forced them to be specific characters. Now, free of the comic and Caliborn, they can be people. Collide's a ton of fun, has a lot of poignant moments in the Heir of Grief segment, and manages to deliver some important character beats - Dirk letting go, Dave finally "mastering" some aspect of his Bro, etc.

I know nobody cares abt this at this point but these comments raise an interesting point. Everyone else got relatively mild or cartoon violence type beatdowns. All except rose who looks like she broke something. And dirk, well, that wasn't on screen in this video. Lmao. Kinda interesting how underplayed the fragility of a human and our reactions to pain are in fiction. You can throw characters around and bruise them, or slice them to pieces, but it won't look "real" violent compared to seeing them snap a rib and puke their guts out from pain.

Reminder that literally one could have possibly beat clover. Clover even brags to spades that if he tried, his gun might jam or something. His luck made him essentially immune to most attacks. Karkat won because of the virus he activated at the start of the session. It curses himself, and whoever he meets with bad luck as well. For once in clover's life, he was on an even playing field.

He was probably the most important. Everyone BUT Clover can at least be killed. Clovers ability of exceptional luck would make it extremely hard to kill considering everybody is using ranged attacks (Fraymotifs and firearms) it wouldn't be hard for him to dodge attacks. However Karkat being a blood player weakened him by bringing himself into the Leprechaun Love Squares and striking when the moment was right. Karkat probably had the most important role in the fight (Vriska didn't actually fight because she couldn't risk dying before using the Juju).

Every time I listen to this my heart clenches and my arm hair stands up and just oh god, it's an experience. Heir of Grief is such a fitting title. 10/10 will cry to again.

Two years late, but this needs addressing. Clorver’s luck makes him near indestructible, rivalled only by LE himself. You can’t wound clover, you can’t defeat him in a fight, he is just too damn lucky. Karkat defeated him. He bested the lucky bastard. Karkat, singlehandedly, defeated the most resistant enemy in collide (excluding LE). Sure, Clover might not be the most dangerous, but he is certainly the hardest to beat. And Karkat beat him.
