If you are going to garden in the desert do raised beds in tubs/tanks/troughs this lets you keep the water from spray or drip irrigation in a self contained aquifer that you can repump back to the top and keep all the fertilizers and minerals that get washed down by rain and irrigation. It also blocks burrowing animals and lets you have a framework to add screening. Rain catchment roofs and ferocrete tanks can make it self sustaining with modest costs.
