Have you ever tried extracting iron from cereal?
@Waffles_Syrup8 жыл бұрын
+Nguagemaster Man, now that would actually be pretty cool, making an iron ingot out of cereal.
@anton26728 жыл бұрын
+Nguagemaster I think you'd need a lot of cereal to get even the tiniest bit of iron from it, corn flakes: 28.9 mg per 100g of cereal, 28.9 * 10 = 289 mg for every kg of cereal lolo
@Tropicalfrooploops8 жыл бұрын
+Nguagemaster lol imagine if he forged a sword out of frosted flakes or somthing
@h3retic5838 жыл бұрын
+Tropicalfrooploops Cody needs to get on this quickly. Although it would be really expensive, almost as much as a real sword. It also depends on the specific charge of the iron, since the charges vary in the transition metals. Depending on the charge, you would need different substances to react with the iron or the other impurities, so that the iron is pure. One easy way to get the iron out is to just crush the cereal into a powder, and put it in a plastic bag with water, and wave a neodymium magnet around. The iron collects on the areas surrounding the magnet.
@hey73288 жыл бұрын
just crush up the cereal into powder, dissolve it into water a throw a magnet in. the iron will collect on it

@blazednlovinit8 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Sicz I think he said it wasn't accurate enough anyway.
@conradyeadon87148 жыл бұрын
+blazednlovinit It would be accurate enough in grams (assuming it goes to 2 decimal places), it's just it read the lowest value that the scale could produce in lbs and for accuracy for mass on a scale you take the smallest value that is given (in this case roughly 2.5 grams) and plus or minus it, seeing as it weighed roughly 2.5 grams and it could be minused 2.5 grams then 0 wouldn't be logical at all so therefore isn't accurate enough for what he wanted as 2.5 grams difference is a humungous percentage of that tiny bit of golds mass :)
@Promethorn8 жыл бұрын
+Conrad Y if it's the same scale I have it only has a resolution of 1 gram.

at about the 8:07 mark you said If the gold contained any silver the washing process would have removed it if it was present. AR doesn't dissolve silver you would create a silver chloride cottage cheese like substance at the very beginning... if you suspect that you gold contains any copper or silver (jewellery) a good starting step would be to inquart your gold with some silver until you were at around 4 or 5 Karat , pour it as shot and then treat it with nitric to remove those metals. rince the remaining powders with distilled water and then either treat those powders with AR or melt those powders pour it as shot then treat it with AR. another option to drop the gold from your AR solution would be to use Oxalic Acid. Good Video though! :)

Cody, very well made video but I see a bit of misinformation. Any lead in solution will precipitate as lead sulfate when you add sodium sulfite or SO2 gas whether it's hot or cold. When the buttons dissolved, you should have let the solution cool and then chill it. Add a few drops of sulfuric acid (conc.) and the lead would have precipitated out as insoluble lead sulfate. It can then be filtered out of solution. Keeping the solution hot is thinking outside the box but unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. When you add the SMB or SO2, the lead precipitated with the gold. The lead must be removed before you precipitate the gold. Too, you show Bonide brand stump out and call it sodium metabisulfate and it should be sodium sulfite. I know all of this has probably been covered but I am trying to advise someone who has watched this video and is wanting to try it to get around having to remove the lead from solution.
@IsettasRock8 жыл бұрын
Nicely done Cody. One thing to remember, every time you transfer solution from one beaker to another you'll experience losses. If you can process start to finish in the same vessel you will cut your losses considerably. I'd expect after refining you should have retained about 85% or 90% of the original weight. I expect there is some gold hiding in with the lead chloride still.

If the solution were hydrochloric acid and bleach containing gold with some copper contaminant , could you still reduce it with some heat without losing gold through evaporation. If so ,would copper crystals form and could they be scooped out of the solution? Thanks for sharing your considerable knowledge Cody !

Bro, you make chemistry so fascinating. Holy Crap! I wish I would have had a smart teacher as you when growing up...

I'm going to be having a series soon on retrieving precious metals from old or unused electronics, it would be awesome if we could do a collab sometime on the refinement process since I don't have the tools or lab space needed to do so.

The weighing near the end and possibly throughout your experiments is very rough. The coins and rice are not all at the same point on the ruler which givers them differing amounts of leverage. While I understand your math and experiments are quite rough and you're going for "it worked" rather than "how well it worked", a $20 scale from Amazon will cut all the estimations with coins, ruler scale, etc. Very easy to use, simply tare beaker, add liquid, metal, gold, etc and add to your concoction. At the very least you can ballpark more accurately. Not asking for precise measurements, just asking you to try to math correctly!

Well, you say it's metal refining, but I still think this is magic! I wish this stuff was this interesting for me in school!

When you test the acid solution to see if all the gold or pgm's have dropped with stannous. Could stannous be used as a precipitater? I have had 5 quart's of AR for several month's, that wouldn't drop the gold. If I stannous test it goes black but after a bit it goes orange and drops to bottom of the spoon. The acid goes clear. Is this a little gold, but also platinum? I am trying your way of evaporating down the acid solution then add double water, to cut the acid ph. I have tried urea and sulfamic, to denox. I built a ball mill from your idea and ground the con's fine, roast, then back in with mercury. Put in nitric and I get real fine white on the bottom. A old miner said silver dissolves into the nitric. The white on the bottom is pgm's? If I torch the amalgam ball to remove mercury then nitric same thing happen's. Any idea's on these? Stannous as precipitater and the white in bottom. Thank's great video's..

Play sand is NOT CaCO3 but it is impure SiO2 which dues not react with HNO3 (or any acid) at all !

to weigh the gold i would have used displacement. you know that it's pure gold so find the density and the rest is really easy.

Hey Cody , sulfuric acid drops lead out of solution... and go buy yourself 2 digital scales that weight in grams & troy ozs. from the vape shop! Oh! And don't forget the distilled water and my bottle of 8 times distilled водка !
