I have no problem with "mundane" setups. It's relaxing listening to your banter while you do something I'm very familiar with. There's a name for it, ASMR. Look it up because this is almost textbook. And make no mistake, I regularly learn something I didn't know before. I look forward to these videos every time they come out.

Looks EXACTLY like my first bass. Same white cream color with the strat knobs and everything. Mine was built in '95. I got it from a neighbor and paid $250 for and spent a whole summer moving lawns in the neighborhood and working with my Dad's catering business. I got a Fender BXR100 amp from him too.

committed to the nut house would be the "safe" way to walk through life, it's more dangerous out herein the "real" world, and I wouldn't have it any other way. EVERYONE has a certain degree of built-in crazy to them that defines them and they couldn't change that about themselves(and no one should dare try and change that about another person or suggest that person change themselves. nor should anyone take their self too serious and wrongly listen to a lie their own brain is saying to them, the should be something they are not and to conform to A "MORMAL" person) if their life depended on it...................so you take the crazy that is yourself, and add(act) about 13% more crazy above that..............IT'S FOOLPROOF at 1-keeping everyone on their toes when you're around, 2 the shit talk about you that goes on when you're not around(or whispered ,fearing you might be close enough to catch them running their mouth, is BARE MINIMUM ....and makes them appear really nuts because if your spouse of parents or kids(those who are privy to the ....method acting?......hear " that guy is blah, blah" and the y laugh and say...."no he's not,you fucking idiot. AND 3- VERY IMPORTANT,VERY.........NO ONE ASKS YOU TO HEPL THEM PACK AND MOVE TO ANOTHER HOUSE, OR BORROW MONEY, OR DOG SIT, CARPOOL THEIR KIDS TO AN AWARDS BANQUETTE TO RECEIVE A PARTICIPATION TROPHY IN THE PARTICIPATING IN RECEIVING A PARTICIPATION TROPHY EVENT ....but they will volunteer to help you do whatever you need to get done to keep an eye on you and hopefully if you ever do flip out, you'll recall their good deeds they did for you and they won't receive any harm as you spiral downward into ultimately becoming a living legend because when you flipped out ,YOU FLIPPED THE FUCK OUT LIKE NO ONE EVER HAD............which is all just a fantasy in their minds that gets them committed because their brain turned off the sanity and .............you get it. wait..........we were talking about bass set up.

Hi Dave. I know it has become traditional to shim necks with a single piece at the end. This is not a good method because it leaves an unssupported section between the shim and front of the pocket.Better to make a wedge to fully support the whole fixing area . A single shim will encourage a bend in the upper neck i.e. a ski ramp. I use folded sandpaper , two layers then one layer or 3-2-1 layers.

Good show, Dave! Hey, I've been thinking, about the capo at first fret thing: if the capo is set just nutwards of the fret, won't the string have to RISE over the fret? I'm thinking so because there's a natural bend radius limit to the string based on its thickness. I'm thinking you could avoid all that string-bending nastiness by placing the capo on top of the fret. You're using the string as a level reference to the top of the fret, you know, not playing it, so...what do ya think?
@johnf62886 жыл бұрын

Did you say that you can put some contact cleaner/lube down the pot shafts (after removing the knobs) to clean them? I've always wondered if that works, being a bit lazy sometimes..
@fredherfst81484 жыл бұрын
The Penny Arcane...yep. Buy a bit of 1/4 clear plastic tubing. Soften one end in hot water. Screw it on. Squirt in some contact cleaner and watch it dissappear. Take it off and do the twisty twisty thing. I had one pot on my old 54 es295 that was really stiff. I had to wait for about ten minutes for it to dissappear. Worked like a charm and the volume and tone were markedly much better. Learned from Dave. Thanks Dave.

Hi Dave, only asking because you said it... Why do you check the harmonic when adjusting the intonation? I thought the harmonic wouldn't be effected as it's just that... a harmonic of the open note? I might be wrong.. ?/ certainly isn't the 1st time... How do I get a Fun Stuff Pick? Thanks
@truckasaurus6 жыл бұрын
The harmonic is the actual note you're trying to replicate in fretting the 12th fret to check the intonation. The open string is an octave lower, and includes the 12th harmonic (and others) so in isolating just the 12th harmonic (especially if using a strobe) before fretting the 12th, you'll get a better picture of what the fretted note should look like.
@lolocfmjpwp0kjcxsa6 жыл бұрын
Lee Huddleston Please, the harmonic at the twelfth fret is called the first harmonic, one octave above the fundamental. The 'twelfth harmonic'? Only dogs can hear. Good question, though. With a Peterson, the next higher band would drift left/right along with the open string fundamental. I've always used the first harmonic to compare with the fretted 12th for intonation check when no tuner device was available.
@truckasaurus6 жыл бұрын
12th harmonic = harmonic at 12th fret.
@bucyruserie12116 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee, I knew what you meant..12 fret position harmonic.. However I don't think it matters, the harmonic produced is going to spot on, even if the fretted note is sharp or flat (ie the intonation is out), because its a harmonic of the open string note.. So why would one even check it while adjusting the intonation? Maybe if you didn't have a tuner? Am I wrong?
@truckasaurus6 жыл бұрын
The open string works just fine, but the harmonic has advantages -- personal preference. Rather than comparing apples-to-apples, you're comparing, for example, Gala apples to Gala apples. The harmonic at the 12 is the same note as the fretted 12, so the "picture" you see on a strobe tuner is closer to what you'll see on the fretted note. It also allows you to train your ear a little better as you're matching a note of equivalent frequency (as mentioned above by lolo).
@greatreset36 жыл бұрын
Dave, why do you shim at the bottom of the neck pocket, instead of the top and bottom to bring up the neck evenly, instead of at an angle? Arent you trying to raise the neck, not change the angle?? 🎵🎸
@lolocfmjpwp0kjcxsa6 жыл бұрын
Ed, you are confused. The angle is exactly what we're trying to change. Think of the pocket as the pivot point and we're trying to re-center the saddle height range adjustment which is buried at the bottom of it's range. Equal raising of the neck at the pocket, rather than pivoting, changes the saddle range only by the thickness of the (two) shims and decouples the body from the neck much more, adversely affecting sustain.
