You know that German railway clocks, the one at the platform, run their seconds hand fast, so that the hand runs in one continous motion from "00" to "59" in 58 seconds, then visibly waits for the minute tick to arrive by wire, upon which the second hand jumps to "00" (12) and the minute hand to the next minute? It is quite mesmerizing, and an ingenious way to synchronize clocks in a whole country back 100 years ago.

If you read it, ISO 8601 is less of a standard, and more of a "cake mix, add seasoning to flavour" recipe. We all say "ISO 8601" but I have to switch strings on a daily base to allow systems to parse their timestamps which they output as "ISO". Ever tried making Java, Azure, Python, SQL, and .NET interoperate on ISO timestamps in 100% guaranteed fashion? They all think they spit out ISO, until you hit an odd edge case where their parser fails on too many digits after the period, omission of the T, etc.

I just completed two of these great GPS clocks, and indeed, with the right tools, I think virtually everybody should be able to assemble it. As an (amateur) astronomer, I sometimes need the most exact time possible. I already own a very accurate Seiko Marine Chronometer, but accurate as it is, if I want it to stay within 0.5 second, it still needs to be matched once half a year, to one of the atomic clocks, for example the DCF77 in Germany. Of course you can buy your own atomic clock, the cheapest way would be a Rubidium Clock, but running these will be way more expensive and energy consuming. So using the atomic clocks in GPS satellites is the most logical way to go! Great work guyzz !!

Indoor use ?? Are you having trouble on power up of the clock to get the first fix and get the clock time/date running ? I know most GPS modules don't like indoor use because of the lack of 'open sky reading' .. If not what are your suggestions about the GPS reception ? Thanks !
@HighDefDude3 жыл бұрын
@@jpdesroc Indoor use is possible, but it depends on your situation: In an apartment building for example, it will mostly be way more dificult than in a single house, certainly when it has a wooden roof. In our situation, there is only one metal roof that seperates us from space. When inside, I must place the GPS clock within some 1.5 meters from a big window to make it work just fine, even with the (small) antenna that comes with the kit.

ISO 8601 does allow you omit the T in various cases, one of which is when you used the extended time format (which you have). so you aren't technically wrong for leaving out the T. in general you would add it though because poorly written parsing software may expect the T to be there. You are also in an interesting spot where in the UK you might use GMT which is +0 zulu time, so you could have zulu time in your time stamp, but not have the Z at the end. to be safe, i always use the extended ISO 8601 timestamp with the T before the hours, and with the Z at the end (i always used UTC time). especially with GPS stuff, its just 1000 times easier to do everything in UTC time because the NEMA messages are already in UTC, and then i convert at the last second using system settings if its required, which is what it looks like you've done. I tend to like the radio clocks more though because they a tad bit more accurate in that they have a better signal in the US. you could lose GPS for enough time to drift

Only by either including, effectively, a GIS system with the timezone border lines in it and an algorithm to place the input latitude and longitude inside one of them, or an internet connection to a web service that's doing exactly that. The idealized time zone system would be quick math just based on the longitude, but we don't live in that world; look at a detailed world time zone map to see just how complicated the system is, with zones' borders mostly, but not always, following political boundaries, and more than a few areas where the zone is offset by 30 minutes. Edit: This was mentioned briefly in the video and there's much more detail on the linked project page.

I was thinking of making something like this, only with one of my salvaged Cs133 or Rb87 oscillator modules.

Would it be possible to build a similar clock that gets it's time from the internet? Sadly, there's no GPS reception where I would like to put this clock.

A breakdown of your software implementation would be really interesting to see. Nice job anyway! I can’t read ASM code T_T

Possible to integrate an external antenna? I use multiple antennas for Most of my GPSDO stuff, one mounted in the windowsill and one on top of the lab roof. I’ve always been afraid that I’ll have a client waiting….while I finish up calibration on their equipment… And for some reason I can’t get a fix on the satellite. 😂😂 I guess it’s the adult equivalent of a school boys nightmare…. Of being naked in front of the whole class

A nice project. I made a GPS clock earlier this year out of an Arduino nano, an 8 digit LED display and a GPS module. Hour, minute, second only as that's enough for my use. It's very cheap thing to make, £4 for the Nano, £2 for the display and £4 for the GPS. Nowhere near as good as this project. As it doesn't display the date, it should be good for a few million years until we have to re-define the second.

3:41 - Wow, no communication between the two clocks and are in complete sync. What camera are you using to capture record at high frame rate to view in slow motion?
