NB: The best spark plug for your car is the one recommended in your owners manual. This is just a demo. A lot goes into the choice of spark plugs, it's not just about spark. Engine design plays a major role. Copper spark plugs are best for some engines, while iridium is best for others. 🙏🏼

The biggest difference is the surface area. The first reason the iridum is much smaller is because this metal is very rare and it's heat resistance is much higher than copper. So a copper tip must be bigger to last as long.

The actual spark energy doesn't change much. The copper is more conductive actually.... while iridium and platinum have a much higher melting point and erode much more slowly, which is required for the finer tips. The smaller area of the finer tip provides better resistance to fouling. The higher temperature and harder platinum and iridium, in particular double iridium and double platinum are for twin post coils, where one operates in normal polarity, the reverse polarity side usually rapidly erodes the electrode and ground strap, the double platinum and double iridium hold up much better here.

Type of plug may have played a role in the improvement you witnessed. Double electrode spark plugs have an advantage in being less prone to misfire plus longevity. there is a bigger spark pattern on the copper igniting the fuel mixture sooner probably. the only reason to use iridium is it lasts longer. i wonder if you had multiple parallel circuits internal to a spark plug that could fire multiple electrodes at the same time, if that would produce better power.

The NGK G power have the same pointed tip as the iridium to propigate spark the same, and seem to yield the same benefits. I run them in applications where the plug is easily changed. They seem to really make a difference in older stuff that had copper plugs. (the service interval is much shorter with the G power)

Yep. It's in the tip and eventually (what this video didn't show), how both metals behave at high operating temp. I agree on the copper wearing faster.

@@DIYAutoworksNG the G power feature platinum, and usually cost what a copper plug does. I love them in old equipment and things that burn oil. They actually seem to go longer without fouling in an oil burner.

Oh I see. Sure, platinum will handle oil burners better since they can endure higher temperatures which copper won't.

Just an FYI- The electrodes on the pointed tip plugs wear out quickly thus increasing the gap and can result in a misfire. I know from first hand experience. Worn at 35k. I'll stick with the flat electrode types.

@DIYAutoworksNG

Copper conducts electricity much better than iridium or platinum which is why its spark was larger. However copper has a low melting point and wears much quicker. Also at higher temperatures, copper spark plugs may not be as efficient.

That's not about the alloy used, that's about the area the electric is given to cross the gap from. The iridium is sharpened to a point, therefore it's not given a way to dance

What most people wont instantly recognize is that the plug on the right will make for better combustion. The iridium plug will perform worse simply because the iridium core is undersized due to the cost, and might only be tipped with iridium. The NGK plug has a larger spark.
@DIYAutoworksNG
@DIYAutoworksNG Жыл бұрын
That's if spark is the only parameter being judged. Resistance to fouling is another issue, with fouling, performance will drop and copper is more prone to fouling. It really boils down to the engine where the spark plug will be fitted.
@mabarracus6716

Most of people are wrong... COPPER plugs have BEST PERFORMANCE (better for a racing/sport car because they are more conductive. Iridium and platinum plugs have much more better longevity (better for a daily car because you can use same plugs much more time/distance); but worst performance.
