This T5500 given it is 10 years old and cheap cost it is really a beast. I installed 72GB ram and using two lower clock speed CPU (XEON x5650) with a cheaper AMD gaming card / SSD. I can play games smoothly while waiting some simulation results from another active linux VM with a database server inside. I don't even feel there is anything running at the background when I am gaming.

Hey 😄 just finished to watch your video on "How to install an NVME M.2 SSD in to a Computer without a Dedicated NVME Slot (Precision T5610)", but now I realized you did it on a T5500, almost twin brother of T7500. Great content! [subscribed]

If you can find and afford one - a Kingston HyperX Preditor is a bootable 4 lane PCIe v2.0 M.2 SSD. It uses an AHCI vs NVMe interface. The SSD with the PCIe adapter card is based on a Marvel chipset with an on-board OROM for bootability in old rigs like the T3500/5500/7500. My 480 GB Kingston in a T7500 and T3600 gets solid read speeds over 1,300 MBs and write of over 1,100 MBs. It's not 970 EVO speeds, but being bootable and more than twice the speed of a SATA SSD - it's a killer upgrade. You can still run an NVMe SSD as a secondary drive. The downside is they're hard to find now and expensive - double the $'s of a WD Black NVMe of the same size.

I know the video is old, but I wanted to say thank you for an informative video. I currently have a T5500 x2 x5675 Xeons, 72gb of RAM and an EVGA RTX 2060 installed. Instead of using a SATA III card in place of the onboard SATA II I'm using a Dell H310 RAID controller as this will not only allow me to boot from the controller, but allowed me to use any SATA III and SAS SSD/HDD drive combinations and hardware RAID support. For my needs the controller is a must have over a standard SATA III controller.

Great video! Got a T5500 for $40. It only came with a single cpu X5650 set up and 12 gigs of Ram. I upgraded my T5500 to a X5675 and put in a GTX 970 and I also put in my trusty SB Audigy 2 sound card. Currently, I can run Cyberpunk 2077 on high setting with some med settings at 1080p with 30 FPS. I’m planning on upgrading the cpu again to a X5690, 24 gigs of ram and a GTX 2080, that’s if I can find a 20 series card for a good price. However, when I upgraded the OS to Windows 10 my sound card which is a Audigy 2 is not recognized. Knowing that windows 10 does not support Audigy 2 cards anymore is there a way I can find windows 10 drivers to Audigy 2 based cards? How did you get your windows 10 to recognize the internal sound card?

I also own a t5500 as well I just put a 1660 in it from a 1050 and x5675 hex core Xeon. and 16GB of RAM. I do plan on adding a 2nd x5675 for dual CPUs. I also am using a USB 3 host card with 2 USB rear ports and front USB 3.0 face cover. I could go the NVME route but I wanted USB 3.0 for fast transfer rates from USB 3.0 flash drives. Edit: I got the 2nd CPU installed and it's working just fine. Also I didn't have enough RAM to maintain Triple Channel memory because of needing registered ECC Memory which is RAM that is tied to a particular OEM PC. So I had to purchase some registered ECC memory. It was dirt cheap too 16 bucks for 8GB (2x 4GBs) ( PA sales tax included and free shipping). When upgrading memory make sure that you use registered ECC memory for the Dell Precision T5500 or the machine will only work in Single channel mode. So I am going to have 24GB of RAM at the end of the day. May put another 12GB-24GB for 36 or 48GB of RAM as a final total. Not sure yet. Finally make sure that you install the 2nd CPU riser card correctly because in my case it caused the fans on the riser card to run at max speeds and the BIOS or Windows will not see the RAM or the 2nd CPU.

The weak point in any computer (especially old ones) is the storage subsystem. I defeat this weak link in older systems (like the T5500) with RAID Cards and traditional 6Gb/s SSDs. Even in a system like this, you can run 8 of the fastest 2.5" SSDs in RAID 0 or RAID 10. Obviously CPUs and Memory capacity are not an issue. Nor is a good graphics card (as you've proven here). The only weak link at that point, is the PCIe 2.0 interface. But despite that, with just a Dell Perc H700 1GB RAID Card and 8 Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSDs, I get near 4GB/s read speeds, and 4GB write speeds. With the 1GB cache card, the write speeds often exceed the read speeds (which without certain parameters is rare, like write back battery backed NV cache). If you use faster SSDs and a better RAID controller you can get above 5GB/s speeds (especially if you use 12Gb/s SAS RAID Controllers). In traditional systems like this you can also use 4 Port SAS RAID controllers and utilize 16 SSDs. I've gotten speeds over 8GB/s reads and writes easily in T7500, and T7600 and above. T5500 chassis is pretty small for 16 SSDs but it can be done. The point is, you don't need NVMe and you can blow it away with traditional SSDs and decent RAID controllers.
@GreenPCGamerscom5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, but controllers and ssd’s can be expensive, and they create more opportunities for failures. We have created some raid 10 configurations on our other videos, and the benchmark speeds are impressive. Thanks for commenting!

Hi guys. I have X5647 single CPU. ROG STRIX RX580 8GB. 48GB of RAM, A400 Kingston as boot SSD and 1TB WB Green. Temperature of GPU raise fast and im working on a proper cooling solution. My concern is that HDDs work only as SATA2, i tried the PCIe 2.0 to Four-Port 6 Gbps SATA I/O Controller and it worked well but speeds of HDDs are the same as befor, Random read for SSD 200mb and HDD around 100, moreover iv started to have BSOD with this sata card and removed it for now. Also tried PERC H700 controller that also worked but it can only be plugged below the huge RX580 occupiing the only available PCI-e as RX580 blocks other e slots... anyway this H700 is getting extreemely hot as it is desighned for servers in datacenters so its dangerous and unpractical considering the GPU is already geverating heat to melt north pole... Main thing to share with you all is AMD RAM disk software that im using for quite some time. Hith this soft you can create a RAM disk (32 gb ) in my case and install a game to this disk as RAM speeds a high youi should experience a better performance in open world games and etc. Worth of trying as workstations advantage is RAM capacity.

Apparently there are different models of Dell factory heatsinks for the Precision T3500, T5500 and T7500... the lower tiers are shorter with only aluminum fins (intended for use with low-clock speed, low-wattage CPUs), while the top tiers are taller, have copper heatpipes, and even have some sort of refrigerant gas permanently sealed inside the heatpipes! Interesting that it won't boot from the PCI-E SDD, because it will boot from a Dell Perc H310 card (which gives you 6gb/s sata, and 499mb/s for my Samsung SSD) . Is the PCI-E card missing completely from the Boot devices list? Mine has dual X5675's, 18GB 10600r ram, Perc card for boot SSD drive, USB 3 card, 5 spinning hard drives (1 on the tray with the SSD, 1 in the floppy spot, 3 in a drive rack in the 5.25 bays), Xonar soundcard (why not..it was spare) and an ATi Firepro V7900. It's a workstation, not a gaming PC. I'm after a 2nd V7900 for crossfire....just cause it will work. I don't think SLI will work, due to lack of motherboard support, but I haven't tried. For games, I've run a GTX-750 and it fits and runs fine - with a power adapter cable and hard drive tray removed (like in the video).

@GreenPCGamerscom5 жыл бұрын
The T5500 doesn't support I7 processors. You should get a Xeon X5690 or X5877 Processor.

Can somebody tell me if it's necessary to update bios to install a new cpu? I want to install a Xeon X5670, and if the passive heatsink is enough to cool it down?
@GreenPCGamerscom5 жыл бұрын
You should updated your bios with the existing processor before upgrading to the X5670 CPU. Also, it would be a good idea to upgrade to the copper heatsink. Technically it is not required for a 95W cpu, but the cooler you can keep your cpu, the better.

Hi my friends, I have questions about my dell precision t5500 I use two cpu 1-no problem I put two graphics cards like :two 1050ti in the system there will be no problem ?If not, 2-there is no problem that the graphics are different like: one gtx other rtx? 3-and the mb Can get electricity goodly??
@GreenPCGamerscom4 жыл бұрын
You could install 2 x GTX 1050 Ti Graphics Cards in a T5500 as long as you have the open PCIe x 16 slots for them. Just keep in mind that the T5500 won't support and SLI with GeForce Graphics Cards.

Excuse me, I didn't understand if two gtx graphics work on this computer and it works great for heavy games ie two graphics communicate well together like: two 1050ti 4g in total 8g it is not better? and the computer Identifies these 8GB? Excuse me, I ask so many questions because you are a professional user and I also you have experience. I have a 1050ti graphics and want to buy another one on Amazon shop so that they work properly during the game and do not lose now I do not know what graphics to buy? Do I need to be the same graphics to identify and work correctly? Thanks for writing the answer
@GreenPCGamerscom4 жыл бұрын
They will not work together because the T5500 doesn't support an SLI configuration for RTX/GTX Cards. You are better off buying one higher end card. We'd recommend the 1660 Ti because it has minimal bottlnecking on the T5500.

Could I put a 1070 ti in this system?
@GreenPCGamerscom4 жыл бұрын
You could, but you'd want to upgrade to a higher wattage psu first.
@allthingsmowing4 жыл бұрын
Not the fastest; the benchmark for that cpu is 6960, the x5675 benchmark (lower clock) 7965 being 1005 points higher, in my Precision t5500. The x5687 has 4 cores, my x5675 has 6 cores I.e. more cores trumps again when it's almost the same architecture.

Can you boot from NVMe?
@GreenPCGamerscom3 жыл бұрын
With most popular NVMe SSDs, no. You can boot using a boot assistant like Clover. Also, the Samsung 950’s will boot, but they are very expensive.
