I have one of these,2x 5680 Xeons,the upgraded heat sinks, 24GB ram HD7870 & an SSD,It work fine with an Asus U3S6 card,so it now has USB3 and Sata 6GB,next I may add a NVME boot drive & pcie adaptor,and better video card if one comes my way.Keep up the good work! Blu Ray works fine

Great piece of kit. Very good at running multiple opsys with VirtualBox and unlike the later T3600 does not require a PERC adapter to run multiple drives in Raid modes.

I absolutely love this era of Precision towers. And other than the T7500 this is one of the best ones. So upgradable, still rather capable for compute tasks and virtualization, server duties, etc. Very versatile. Yeah the T3600 is a great unit unless you needed RAID, or more than 8 cores 16 threads on one CPU lol.

Nice video! I have the T5500. This is powerful unit! I think i will make the overview of this workstation for my Polish viewers. Many of young people don't know what is a workstation or server like this

@@intrepide1970 are you still running BIOS A02 .. The current bios for these machines is A18 . If you go to the Dell site and put in your service tag it will lead you to a bios update link . You can update it by creating a bootable USB drive and flashing the bios.. I had to update mine to accept the dual upgraded Xeon processors that I am running

Pretty cool watching people getting use outta this formerly top-end gear. I just bought my dad a T1700 4790 (4th gen i7) w/16GB for $300 (including tax & shipping) to replace his even older Lenovo Core i3 2130 (2nd gen)with 4GB. The T1700 was actually a bit cheaper than a lot of the OptiPlex 9020s I was seeing. Together with his new Samsung EVO 870 1TB, it’s gonna be fine. He just surfs the web, etc. No gaming. Great detail on this video.

lol i run mine with 2 x5690s, 48 gb of ram, and a rtx 3070. Itll run any game u throw at it amazingly in 1440 p, vr or standard, and will ray trace. Love this pc, but i wish I could boot off of my nvme drive (i needed a pcie adapter). Also i swapped my psu to an 850 Watt model because the stock one kept crashing when I upgraded to my 3070. No crashes since. My guess is that because of the age it probably was more like 600 to 700 watts.

Not sure if you had seen the later video but i got mine upgraded to dual X5650 chips for $20. For the moment, because of the graphics card shortages going on everywhere, it just has an RX 560 in it. But even still it does a really great job.

If I’m not mistaken these did not originally ship with Blu-Ray drives. They can be put in one of these machines if you wanted to upgrade one with a blu-ray drive.

It's actually pretty interesting that Dell chose to go with a proprietary daughtercard for the 2nd CPU ...in 2010! I have an old dual-486 machine (made by VTech, of all people!) that has its processors set up in a similar way. First CPU is on the motherboard, 2nd one is on a daughtercard. For a 486, it was probably necessary as I don't believe the 486 natively supports SMP/cache coherency, so Vtech obviously had to rig up their own support logic. But a Nehalem Xeon would have all of that built in!
@jwoolery99
@jwoolery99 4 жыл бұрын
Probably because of the narrow, admittedly-shallow case spacing, they had to go about with the daughter-board method. Not ideal, but I bet that's how the taller case designs of the later T5600 came to be to accommodate the second processor and smarter use of space on the motherboard. Just a guess.
