In this video I discuss my top 10 reasons to start boxing today, including a bonus reason. 1. Boxing is fun 2. You can choose your level of involvement 3. Incentive to live clean 4. Motivation to do other sports/conditioning 5. Get into amazing shape 6. Make a lot of progress on your own 7. Relieve stress and develop greater self-defense awareness 8. Boxing is for everyone, boxing doesn't discriminate 9. Boxing builds friendship, camaraderie and trust 10. Boxing gets you in the mindset of focusing on performance over aesthetics Bonus - Boxing engages the mind in a big way

My first two sparring sessions in particular gave me a lot of motivation to work on conditioning :) Boxing has set up a great positive feedback loop for me, where working on one thing, like running, pays dividends elsewhere, which then feeds back into the other activities.

I'm not going to quit skateboarding, but I've been working out consistently for a few months and contacted my local boxing gym about getting started. It's always been so awesome to watch people spar and even just train for boxing so it's where I'm going. I figure I might as well get my fitness started while I'm still youthful ya'know. If people can start and do great in the 20's then it'd be a waste to not start at my age knowing all this! I hope you keep improving man!

Thanks a lot for this great motivational video, I feel I had to write the following comment for all people, whether you're thinking about getting into boxing or not. I started kickboxing a little over a year ago, at the time I was 27, smoker and I didn't give a crap about eating healthy, completely out of shape. I got into kickboxing for the workout and the added bonus of learning to defend myself if I really had to, I had no idea what I would discover. Kickboxing is the only sport which made me want to wake up at 7am or train at 10pm, it's so engaging, so much fun, one heck of an exercise. Everything changed after I started: - Although I still smoke (because I enjoy it, never wanted to quit), I'm thinking about quitting as I want to hit a higher performance. - I started eating healthy, I have breakfast (I never had breakfast in my adult life) as I want to build the muscle and have the energy to do my best in the training, especially in sparring. - I look like a human being, my posture changed, my lower back pain is gone. My muscles are powerful although I am not much bigger I look really good (pardon my self-flattery) and I don't break a sweat running up the stairs. - Confidence but with humility: exactly as Jason mentioned, you learn self-defense without having to beat anyone. After a year, I feel confident, I avoid bad situations more calmly because I know that I have a choice, at the same time, boxing teaches you humility, to care for others and to know that no matter how good you get, you can still find someone who's better than you in a way or another. - In boxing you can feel the progress (what a rush), but as you progress you understand that you have a lot lot more to learn, that's when you realize that boxing is not just a sport you do for a few years, it's something which should be with you always, a part of your lifestyle. - One of the prejudices I had about boxing clubs is that they're full pf dirty hustlers and small-time criminals, man was I wrong. I'm sure that there are some low level boxing joints out there, but I am sure that good joints like the one I go to are everywhere. I managed to make friends there, really exceptional people, so it was a way for me to get out of my social anxiety. - Another prejudice I had was that these kind of sports are very violent and that I will receive so many punches in the head that I'll become stupid :)) I learnt that you can go as hard as you want, you can get professional, or as in my case, I just like the workout and I might participate in amateur light contact competitions. Sparring is not that violent, as long as you go to the right gym, you might get intimidated at the beginning, but I'm sure absolutely anyone can get over it after being hit a few times, and see that it's not so bad. Long gone are the joints where they break your nose upon signing up. - I learnt that my body can do much more than I thought, I learnt to push myself physically and mentally in order to progress. Although I still smoke, I am one of the most resilient people in the gym just because I don't stop when I'm tired and I feel like my soul is leaving my body. - Mood: it's had a major impact on my mood, the way I talk to people, I got rid of my anxiety. The day after a hard workout is a magical one, I have energy, I'm happy and outgoing. - Sleep problems: I had problems sleeping before, not anymore, a good workout guarantees a baby-like sleep, not just after the workout, but all the time. Don't hesitate, and if you start keep at it maximum pace for a few months straight, giving the best you can offer, then I'm sure you will not leave this sport anytime soon. Don't worry if you're completely out of shape, this sport will shape you as long as you give it your all. P.S. I workout 3 times a week, which is minimum, but I almost never skip training.

I've been a basketball player for 2 decades and loved every minute of it. The game gave me athleticism, confidence and focus, where other sports failed. That journey started 30 years ago. Now, at the age of 37, I am ten weeks into boxing at my local gym and training with guys and gals older and younger... I'm in the best shape I've been in 15 years and I'm improving every day. I'm a slim guy but was gaining hard, brown, dangerous fat around my torso and losing definition and explosiveness in my body. Boxing and a major change in my diet made that story history and I cannot recommend starting to box enough. It has the same draw and gives me the same drive as basketball did all those years ago and makes me want to get better every day. If you're hesitant about starting, don't be, you will not regret it. Plus a bonus is that actually, my boxing has made my bball better. Ain't life funny :)

100% correct. I add that even in the less friendly moment (the competition) you experience something difficult to describe. You are scared because you put a lot of yourself on the line. You are anxious because you trained every day for months just to be there. You are ready to, as you said in another video, let the tiger out of the gate. And you have in front of you a human being that is experiencing the same things, with no exceptions. For 3 rounds (or more) you share a very primordial emotion with a stranger and it is a really good feeling.

Hey I don't box but I do kickboxing which I guess is similar. Kickboxing is awesome because the only equipment you actually need is two hands, and two legs. You don't need friends to go with you, people are usually pretty welcoming in gyms as long as you don't step out of line. The obvious thing is self defence, since I've started I've gotten involved in less fights and I think that this is because people know that you punch and kick shit to hell and back for fun. You're also gonna look pretty good, I've gained like 20 pounds in a few weeks (I used to be a toothpick with legs). The only thing that's stopping you is YOU.

Wolf Bite if you're losing weight then it's probably junk and toxins that you have accumulated over the years and which are stored in your fat as well as in your intestines. If you're actively exercising etc, then your weight loss can't possibly mean less muscle mass, unless you're downright not giving yourself proper nutrition. You're probably releasing more junk faster than you're building muscle mass, or your body needs to release that junk first in order to build muscle mass. Myself, I'm 5'11" and currently about 129 pounds, and also the strongest I've really ever been, and "back then" I was always about 140-144 pounds, and NOT at all "fat" visually. A few years ago after MUCH bodily cleansing (as therapy for chronic illness which sprouted up in 2007), I built my strength up and was around 135-138 lbs on average. So I speak from experience with a similar body type. Okay, so on to diet tips..... eat healthy sources of protein within 30 minutes after exercising to help build muscle mass. I'm mostly vegetarian, I eat LOTS AND LOTS of fat, protein, and fiber in my diet.......like huge amounts of coconut oil (VERY healthy source of medium chain saturated fat) mixed with various nuts etc and many medicinal spices. I eat super nutritionally-dense foods. Here's the thing about building muscle......your body creates muscle (protein) FROM a combination of amino acids. "Essential amino acids" are those which your body can't produce on its own, and must be acquired through diet. And what I'm getting to is this: if you consume foods containing ALL the essential amino acids, then you are able to build muscle. Being mostly vegetarian, I consume foods with all the essential amino acids (chia seeds, avocados, cashews, etc), and definitely consume a variety of foods such that IN COMBINATION I consume all of them. I mix peanuts, sunflower kernels, chia seeds, other nuts, coconut oil, olive oil, SEVERAL spices, pink Himalayan salt, and really so much I can't think of it all LOL and it's super nutrient dense, super efficient for your body to absorb, healthy (let food be your medicine), and it's truly nourishing. So I hope some of this helps, and at the very least inspires you to try some new foods! :)

I'm a 21yo and have been more or less interested in boxing for about 10 years. Been training it for two short periods. For a brief while when I was a kid, which eventually came to an end because of the distance to the gym. I then gave it another try when I was 19. And even though I'm a newbie when it comes to boxing, the coach and some of the experienced guys at the gym was impressed by my relatively good skills for a beginner. This really built up my enthusiasm even more. Unfortunately also this period turned out to be brief due to health issues. Since then I have not gone back at it for various reasons. But I've still been doing a lot of boxing inspired training on my own during this time. Thank you for a good and motivating video! Got me even more interested about giving boxing yet another try at a real gym.

You're so right about number 4.. Boxing making other exercises less painful..I used to hate doing any other work outs...I joined an mma class the other day and i'm 44...I joined for self defense because i live in a shitty neighbourhood right now and i also joined for fun and it's the best decision i ever made...I spared for the first time in my life and now working out at home almost every day has just been something i do automatically...I can't explain it but i know it was because i sparred the other day.

JT, just wanted to say THANK YOU for your videos, I'm 45 now, but from 11yrs old to 16yr, I was a boxing junkie .. had my garage setup until I was around 30.. haven't hit the bag, or did anything boxing related until this last year, my 11yr old really likes the sport, so I went out and bought him his youth punching bag, showed him so beginning moves... with the help of your videos, I emphasize footwork and balance... working in jab and 1-2 ... your videos are excellent help, when we are just relaxing, instead of video games, my son is starting to use your virtual training...lol. I love it.. ... for me... about a year now, I've been working out again in my garage again.. this is one of my favorite video for me... kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIvOdpqnr9NlpdU again, thanks for the hard work and dedication in putting these videos together.

Excellent post my friend! I'm 53 and I started boxing about 4 years ago. An older trainer at my gym talked me into training with him. I'll be honest, I didn't want to at first. I had NO INTEREST. I was only into weight lifting. Now I thank God I took up his advice. I soon realized how out of shape I was aerobically! Boxing is more aerobic than anyone ever imagines. Also the reflexes! My reflexes are so much better. Great stuff man! Now I'm so interested in watching the older boxers.....Sugar Ray Robinson, etc. Also love guys like Micky Ward. Now I'm "hooked".

Evan Brown id recommend buying a jump rope a 100lb punching bag and bench with weights and double ended bag and also if you can a speed bag and running shoes that would be all you need for your boxing experience and whats better you dont have to be training with anyone u can be also by yourself at your house belive me doing that for at least 4 days a week for the least 2 hours will get you all ready plus running at least 2 miles maybe once a week if u can and conditioning your body sit ups push ups pull ups crunches .. just an advice tho

Recently started training boxing alone and it really helped so many bad aspects of my life. Depression, anxiety, low self steem, bad shape. It even broke my fear of gyms. And how much i needed to hear that "Boxing is for everyone". I was afraid to look for someone to practice with because i used to think no way someone like me could become a boxer, and i would just embaresse myself. Thank you so much.
@Pleksilasi5 жыл бұрын
Hey man! Thanks for the video. Especially the part "Purpose" struck me. I've suffered from depression for years back in the days. I kept on going from school to school, academy to academy, job to job and so on. Just went on doing stuff because "I was supposed to do this and that". And it left me hollow, an empty husk of a person. My relationships were more like relationshipwrecks and I could not stay in one place for long, I moved alot and went through many towns, jobs and people. Met some good and a ton of bad. All this changed when I asked an acquaintance from my earlier years and I asked him if he would like to hit the gym with me and he said yes. A couple of days passed and I met him at a gym in Tampere, Finland. I thought he looked funny, dressed up in a black Gi (used for Judo,BJJ and other budo stuff). Next thing was not lifting the weights or running a treadmill, no. The dude basically threw me around for an hour and a half after which I thought that I had definetly broken something. Well, nothing really broke, I got a couple bruises, but nothing bad. But this weird thing happened : Something awakened, the emptiness inside of me was gone. I felt like I really gotta learn these moves, get strong and fast and beat this guy in his game. So I started going to practice with him and I'm still on the same road, ever learning new stuff and trying to improve on the old. Thats like some 5 to 6 years-ish now. After this experience, I found a girl, which I'm gonna marry in like 4 months, I got to the university to become a language teacher and I'm no longer depressed. I do get some occasional "bad straights", but no more than 2 or 3 days max. I have also found some of the best people I know to this day, some of which have actually kicked me in the face and I liked it (You know who you are). I decided to share my story of fighting and fightsports, because I think I owe alot to martial arts. Fighting really elevated me from a shambling mass of human biomass into a person, and thats huge for me. And I totally agree with all the things pointed out here. Stay strong fellow fighters, never give up! Läpi harmaan kiven! TLDR : Wisdom. Been there, done that. 5/5 video

I spent years shadow boxing in my bedroom until I finally had the confidence to actually workout in a proper gym and even then some to actually start sparring.

Good job! I train BJJ and it changed my life around a bit for the better. How much do you pay for your boxing gym? Like do you take private lessons? I am trying to understand how boxing gyms are ran.
@ericwilkinson425 жыл бұрын
@@bane3991 the gym I go to has a kind of sliding scale based on how long of a contract you commit to and/or how much you pay up front. All told I pay $55 a month, but if I had paid for an entire year up front, it would come out to like 35 a month. At my gym, there's a beginner workout you start out with that's 3 days a week, 90 minutes(ish) a day at a set time that's pretty straight forward in terms of a boxing work out (warm up, footwork drills, shadowboxing, bag work, conditioning, basic drillwork/coaching), and after a few months (depending on your progress/work ethic) the coach might invite you to start coming in on Tuesdays and Thursdays for sparring and/or more specific drillwork. As far as coaching, being that I'm there as a fitness guy as opposed to a competitor (we have 1 pro and several competing amateurs at our gym) I don't get quite as much 1 on 1 time as some of the other guys, but the head trainer tries to make as much individual time for all the members as he can. Most of the coaching I get is during the regular work out, where he sorta watches the whole gym correcting technique issues as he sees them. But he tries to run me through a 3-5 round mitt session at least once a week, works me into drills with the competitive guys, and he even went out of his way to set up a specific conditioning program for me. And the competitive members are super helpful and down to coach me up on things too. All that being said, I'm not sure how other gyms do things, as I've only really ever spent time in this one, but I'd imagine most smaller gyms operate pretty similarly.
@bane39915 жыл бұрын
@@ericwilkinson42 Wow, that's so cheap! I know 1 boxing gym by me is 125 a month and that's in a more cheaper area. But in your gym, you said you choose a specific time to come in and he helps you. Does that mean he's there all day and you just walk in and he'll just help you out? I talked to 1 guy who trains at the gym near me and he said you walk in anytime it's open and he'll go over some technique and you drill. The place I want to go to he has a 10AM class to 11AM. He'll have open gym time after that where you train on your own. I guess I need to go at 10AM in order to get trained as opposed to the other place. It's confusing because BJJ gyms are straight forward, boxing is a wild west it seems like. Thanks for letting me know how it is. I really want to get into it.
@ericwilkinson425 жыл бұрын
@@bane3991 so initially, it's a class at a set(ish) time. Kids/teens early afternoon, adults early evening kind of thing. Then if you either show a good amount of skill or really just show that you're self motivated and don't need to be babysat, he allows you to come in whenever they're open. He jokes about it being the difference between being a "customer" and being a "member".

@@ericwilkinson42 Ohhhh, I see. That makes sense. Thanks for letting me know. I think I'm going to try it eventually. It's just that BJJ is so expensive that I don't know if I can afford boxing but I'll go down their and check out the price for the 1 I want to go too.

So I got a pair of gloves when I was 14, didn't know anything about the sport but loved it nonetheless. I started to look up pro fights and YT tutorials. Because of my kinesthetic learning style and my lack of natural talent, it didn't get me very far. However, as soon as I went to a boxing gym for a few days, everything changed for me. My skill level boosted way up, and everything started to make sense to me. Also, after months of watching fights and shadow boxing, I feel like a professional, although i would get my butt kicked by a pro. The point is, boxing is the bomb. I'm a bit late to this video, but I like what was said about "aesthetics". I used to lift extensively - at first, just for the pump, then later one year I tried a "bulking" phase to gain size. So I first get not quite ripped, but at a good "healthy" or athletic look, then I'm cramming in a bunch of calories in the winter - getting my belly back just to gain a bit more muscle...for no purpose but to have a certain look. I did the math of what I was spending in food and supplements, then stopped and thought, "This pointless and expensive". I had no plan to compete, just look good. Boxing(or in my case - kickboxing) gives me a better drive to hit the jump rope, treadmill, and the weights still, but strategically to benefit the sport or martial art. Feeling good and staying alive and healthy for my children(and leading by example) means more to me than just pointlessly growing in size - again, just in my case.

11) Boxing gets your fight-or-flight adrenalin levels up, which is good for older people especially 12) Boxing is a sort of communication and as such allows us to see ourselevs from the the point of view of others, our opponents 13) This increased level of objective self-awareness makes people pro-social, more moral, more gentle (hence it being known as the gentleman's sport) 14) You don't need much in the way of equipment 15) It is an all body work out and a great way of exercising the core and lower back -- these are the body areas that cause the most days off work I think. 16) It is a great method of self defence 17) 12 and 15 lead to better posture and better posture has many health and social benefits such as 18) It improves confidence from improved condition, posture and the knowledge that you can knock other's block off. Confidence without the need to engage in self praise. And, I don't do boxing! I do Karate really badly. Thanks for your shadow boxing video.

ButSeriouslyThough Thats other gains. In this case is no pain no thougness. Because its letting your body accept the pain and not allert our brain about that previously mentioned pain. Pain adaption. But also fortifies the bones... or breaks them. So yeah... keep in mind you need to eat right in order for bones fortification and not broken ones. Also to avoid go extreme at the beginning is adviced by some to avoid injuries. Like no sparing until a bit of coditioned at bags and such. Also neck training is adviced before going extreme. Some people even condition at trees/baseball bats before sparing but that i dont advice because in my opinion sparing is less extreme than those. Dont mislead conditioning and injuries. Condition lets you hit harder and stand hits. Injuries stops your from go forther and be better. So yeah avoid injuries at all costs. But keep in mind injuries happen everywhere so dont be afraind. Until now i only had an injurie from the little hand finger (3x already) from a punch and a back injurie due to weight pressure (this one took me years to heal). All of them my fault the back one it was due to lack of back flexibility and the hand ones no gloves or tape training failing the strike.
