This. So on my first actually built street car I learned my lesson the hard way, now mind you it was an old car and I was but a kid with something to prove and nothing to show for it. Well I built a 1993 Firebird Trans Am turbo forged pistons everything. Had it chipped(old obd1 prom shit right there) well I kept blowing up transmissions, and me thinking nothing of it kept replacing them as, welp you cant modify a transmission. I learned my lesson long after that car died. Now I'm sitting pretty at just north of 1000 and am knowing I've reached the upper limit of my 6L90 honestly suprised it survived to that level of power, but it's a good trans, ordering a fully built one soon.

@@Berto-1117 still i'd rather drive a slow manual than fast auto
@Qui-93 жыл бұрын
There's a common misconception that automatics are less reliable than a manual because there are more parts. That is simply not true before they wear down to that point. All the parts are new on each new unit, and the lifespan of each part is not affected by its proximity with other parts. When a machine enters the phase where a significant portion of the parts are beginning to wear at different rates, then yes, you'll have to replace more parts in the same time frame if it had more to begin with. If there's anything that fueled that misconception, it's because an automatic transmission contains parts which are more prone to wear in the first place, such as valve parts, seals, wear rings, clutch friction material, a filters/strainers, etc. A manual has synchros and the clutch is external. Things like that.
@pinecedar1803 жыл бұрын
@@applepoop10 I think even if an auto transmission is 5% less reliable, I'll still take it because its so easy to work with. Think about the 500 shifts you have to do every day. I'm going to say the data says that Auto is pretty reliable

When parts are just being senselessly chucked around I start to worry: all those super fine machined tolerances being dinged here and scratched there especially on an unforgiving metal bench. Why not just 'place' the item down in some sort of logical, tidy order? And the heavy parts being dragged around across the bench this way and that. Why bash the end of that central shaft up against the bench trough to release the inner drum when there is a soft mallet actually to hand on the bench? Does any of this mis-handling improve the transmission - would it score you extra points in a supervised technical examination?

Mr. Richard, Ms. Theresa and Mr. Trent, thanks for your videos. When I was a kid in college in the late 60's and early 70's. I worked in a SERVICE station in upstate New Your, not a gas station. We did all kinds of work, brakes, suspension, exhaust, starter/generator rebuilds, clutch replacements, engine rebuilds/swaps and anything other shops would not do. That said, transmissions were not in our wheelhouse. They were kind of 'black boxes' between the engine and the 3rd member, especially automatics. We typically sent them to a transmission shop, both automatics and standards, to be repaired, and never spent any time learning them beyond R&R. . Watching your videos has educated me in how automatic transmissions work. Your encyclopedic knowledge of all the transmissions that you see in your shop is amazing. Your videos have been very enlightening for me in how modern automatic transmissions operate. I wish I had known this back in the day. I started at 10 years old by watching my Dad rebuild a 2 barrel carburetor. Rip it apart and throw all the parts in a basket and into cleaner and then rip open a rebuild kit and slap it all back together again. I was amazed and thought I could never do that. From carburetors to valve jobs…..then to full engine overhauls and then when I was a senior in HS, I could rip the whole drive train apart and put it back tougher again. I would balance the engine so that you couldn’t tell that the engine was running. Takes desire and time to learn the basics and by then you start suggesting modifications to make it run smoother and more efficient. It all starts with sincere desire to learn, plus respect for those who did it before you. In my case, my Dad is my ultimate super hero!

ebay is good for some hard to find items, but probably not for something like this. I did find some center caps for a older set of aluminum wheels on ebay. No one, I mean NO one else had em... looked all over the net. In fact, I was lucky ebay even had em, and they were new in the box never been used and fit perfectly.

I can really appreciate how you open up new packages just to show the quality and the difference in the parts you use from stock. When any of my automatic transmissions blow, I’ll be making the effort to ship it to you from NJ.

Was a lot better inside than I expected going by "ebay" in the title, was expecting a box of wore out junk. Love the channel, nothing beats a family business who care about quality and their customers. Hope you will update us all if you find the fault or at least if when you rebuild that it's back in the customers vehicle and working.

There is something mesmerizing about watching really experienced old timers take apart automotive components and just know every little thing about each one and then putting their hands on the next step before their eyes even get there. Keep up the great work!!

Hey, Richard, I'm home getting over COVID and on my quarantine so I stumbled upon your videos and I am really enjoying watching them. I am a (semi) retired Ford technician, which means I retired from Ford after 15 years and now work part time in an independent shop. I am also a special care pediatric registered nurse, which is where I got COVID. My expertise is in Ford transmissions, which you may know is a great career choice, but our most common transmission failure jobs in our shop are with the 4L60E (no surprise there). Watching your videos has taught me a great deal as I am not factory trained in GM transmissions, so I will take what I am learning here with me on my next transmission job. But, I have noticed something odd; I never see you remove the low-reverse piston on any of these 4L60s, you seem to leave it in the case and end the video. I know its not difficult, requires a special puller, which I've adapted from my Ford kit, but maybe some of us would like to see how its done...or at least how you do it. Also, do you ever put any of these transmissions back together on video? I see a lot of tear downs but no reassembling. Especially some of the high performance modifications for racing and modified applications. I'd like to see you perform these modifications instead of just talking about them. I've got a TH350 waiting for me when I get back in a 400 HP Camaro (and I've built a lot of those, with and without shift kits), but I'd like to add some of your modifications to it and see how it goes. Maybe put a few more reassemblies in your library for guys like me who want to put your expertise to good use. I am also interested in how to disassemble and reassemble the Chrysler 42/44RE overdrive units, since I've got one of those waiting as well. And if you ever want to learn how to start an IV or install a G-tube, give me a call.

ER Nurse here, I rebuilt 2 4l60E (for my GMC Jimmy and RS Camaro)and helped my neighbor with his 700R4. I recently did the big job (rear bearings and seals) on my Gen3 4Runner. My friend has a car lift in his backyard 20x40 garage. So it was super easy. He's also a Nurse. Glad to see us Nurses can multitask!!!!!!!

I learned how to build transmissions in an independent shop where we built stick and drag trans and now work at a dealership. I agree we your mods but here in the dealership world, you leave them stock or they come back complaining about shift feel!
@mk1cortinatony3953 жыл бұрын
So you didnt find an actual cause to stop it working. Looks like the ebay trans was built quite well actually. The converter at the very beginning has a "scroll" type marking on the snout. any comment about that? Cant blame ebay its just who sells lol

Looks like there was nothing wrong with that transmission. Maybe worth the ebay price. Wonder if the owner forgot to do something stupid like to hook up the shift linkage.
@eric633773 жыл бұрын
Or the ecms fried or wires to the trans. But still should have moved. But the trans wasn't built for what the guy was trying to do. But the customer could have just bought a stock transmission too. Your know how customers are they never give the full story. Or mabie he didn't have the converter bolts in 🤣🤣.
