I had a frozen shoulder which started in February 2021 in my left shoulder. It started with spontaneous, sharp pains which spread down my left arm. Whilst the pain wasn't severe, it was sharp. I didn't have pain all the time and I only had the pain/freezing stage for about a month/6 weeks. I went to see a physio and did stretching exercizes which helped. I was in the thawed stage for about 8 to 10 months I would say. I play a lot of tennis and I think playing tennis and staying active helped me. My shoulder started thawing out during 2022 and I think by summer 2022, I had recovered 80% of my mobility in my left shoulder. Fast forward to December 2023 and my left shoulder is fine now. The only slight restriction is external shoulder rotation which hasn't fully returned to normal yet but I'm 95% there. Hopefully by next spring, it will be 100%. If you're suffering from frozen shoulder here are some tips. 1) See a physio as they were very helpful. 2) Stretch every day. Especially your affected shoulder. 3) Stay fit and active. 4) Definitely eat healthy and becareful about consuming too much sugar or carbs. High blood sugar levels cause inflammation and joints in the body can crystalize. 5) Get plenty of sleep and water. 6) Stretch out your back daily especially mid back as a stiff mid back can cause poor posture and stiffness. 7) Try not to worry. Whilst a frozen shoulder is highly annoying, if you stretch, keep active and you lead a healthy lifestyle, you will get 90 to 100% of your shoulder mobility back. You just have to be patient about the recovery process. But the healthier and fitter you are, the faster your recovery. I hope this helps👍

Thanks for the tips my friend. Hope your shoulder is good now 100%. And I hope my shoulder will be healed because I can't sleep and its so hard even if to hug my kids. I am 41 and I am in pain since March 2023. I have seen many doctors.. Unfortunately nothing. They do not care. They only say "surgery"... The first dr told me that it is tendon rupture and he treat me with sock wave. No results..... The second told me is because of my C6-C7 neck issue, he told me to stop gym and exercises (for more than 3 months) and he treated me with injections.. After the injections told me about surgery. The other one told me that its probably be my shoulder and I have to do an new MRT... I am confused. I have gone to 3 physio, also nothing... I have gone also to chiropractic, nothing also... I am alone and I am trying to find solution through internet. I do stretches everyday, but sometimes the pain is huge after the stretches, even if I do not press a lot...

Thanks for your comment. I recently got frozen shoulder from what seemed to be a trauma in the shoulder caused by falling elbow first into the ground. It's been 5-6 weeks and I believe the freezing phase has just stopped recently as the sudden sharp pain went away unless I try to stretch my shoulder beyond a certain point. I really want to get back to physical activities really bad and trying to do home therapy every day in hopes of thawing the muscle sooner.

great tips. I have a question. I stretch out my mid back and tspine often due to having arthritis in my tspine since my 30s but now that my shoulder is frozen i cannot do the stretches i normally do. I cannot stretch my lats or tspine due to no range of motion in the shoulder. What are the mid back stretches you can do that you refer to please?

I had spontaneous onset in my left arm about 4 years ago. When I went to the orthopedist, he coldly said, "You have adhesive capulitis, it will take 3 years to heal and there's nothing you can do about it." In spite of physical therapy and weekly massage, it did take 3 years to heal and now it is slowly starting in my right arm. I desperately do not want to suffer through this pain again, I am a sign language interpreter and interpreting exacerbates the pain and inflammation. I did see two other orthopedists and eventually got cortisone shots that helped temporarily but your video has given me more information than all three doctors and two physical therapists could not give me. More importantly, it's given me hope for what has been a horribly painful and emotional experience that I don't want to repeat. Thank you for your informative and helpful video!

Hi Shannon, I'm sorry to hear about your shoulder. While I can't say there is anything that will prevent a frozen shoulder developing, what I will say is that the more you can do the greater your chances. So by this I mean, regular stretching, moving and strengthening, eating very healthy and sleeping well. I wish you the best and I hope it doesn't develop further. Best wishes, Ashley

I simply have to thank you for this video. I have been suffering from a frozen shoulder for the past eight months and seeing someone explaining so well the exact symptoms of what I have been experiencing was almost emotionally overwhelming. I have started physiotherapy and in just nine sessions I have recovered more that 95% of my initial arm mobility, although residual pain still exists. Most of the exercises I've done were presented here, yet I have to mention that contrary to this somehow milder approach, I went for the contrary and aggressively pushed through the pain. If I may humbly offer a piece of advice to all sufferers out there...please don't doubt this will pass. Trust your medic/therapist, believe in yourselves, and fight the pain to your best ability.

This is probably the best frozen shoulder explainer I have seen. I have just been diagnosed and unfortunately both of my shoulders are affected but one is much more painful. Your description of the pain radiating into the upper arm, trapezius and neck is exactly what I am experiencing with my left shoulder right now. I have a good physio ho has prescribed some basic stretches to begin with very similar to yours but using some bands instead of the stick to start to regain some range of motion. I am hopeful of seeing some progress soon, in fact my right shoulder is already mildly improved after just one session and a week of slow careful stretches. It is a horrible condition and I wish all fellow sufferers well.

Very informative and useful information for anyone who has, or has had, this type of injury. As you know, this happened to me about 7 years ago. A recent reply from you brought me to this video, so thank you for that. For others here, and for you to add comment if you like, I will summarise a bit of my experience below: Basically, the three stages as you described are exactly what happened. When I went to my GP he immediately diagnosed the problem, as the symptoms are quite obvious. The GP's solution was as follows: 1. 600mg Ibuprophen 3 times a day for a month. (I did it for a week, it only took the edge off the pain and made my stomach hurt, so I stopped taking it). 2. I was given some very basic stretching exercises: walking my hand up and down the wall, that was it. It helped improve mobility temporarily, but was painful to do. 3. After a month of worsening pain and lack if mobility, he then suggested steroid injections. At that point I stopped going to the doctor and sought help from a physiotherapist. She recommended a series of weekly treatments for several months, then monthly for a further 14 months which I can only describe as absolute agony, but she did restore the mobility gradually and help me make an almost complete recovery over 2 years. Ok, shortly after developing the symptoms I met a Harley Street eye surgeon who told me he had the same injury, perhaps at the early stages compared to mine. He opted for a more severe, but rapid treatment. (Which my physiotherapist thought would have been too risky in my case). Basically, he underwent full anesthesia so his arm could be whipped round and stretched in every direction to break up the "scar tissue" that was trapping and restricting mobility and causing pain in the shoulder joint. He said that once the scar tissue is removed in this way it then naturally dissolves in the body! The result was within 2 days he had completely restored mobility to his shoulder, although it was a bit sore for a week, but that was is it, cured! I suggest that this particular remedy requires a careful medical examination before undertaking such an option. More experience: while travelling in Kerala, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity for a ayurvedic massage treatment in a local ayurvedic hospital in Kochin. They did amazing massage and manipulation of my injured shoulder and restored mobility noticeably, however it didn't last long - but it did help me to enjoy my time there more! The specialists there told me that I would need about 2 to 3 weeks of daily treatments to cure the condition, which unfortunately I wasn't able to do at the time. I hope my experiences with frozen shoulder may help others here reading this comment and watching the video.

I ticked off all the boxes for all the symptoms that you said and I can barely even lift my arm in any direction. However, I just tried a couple of the stretches and it's the best I felt in 2 days. Now fully recovered from frozen shoulders. The right shoulder first, then later, the left. I discovered by accident that squeezing a firm stress ball in the hand of the affected arm gave some pain relief and sped up the thawing process. I could really feel things unsticking around the shoulder. Consequently, as the left shoulder started to freeze I began the stressball squeezing immediately and it thawed out in half the time of the first episode.

Ive had mine for about 6 months now. Was unable to get to see an orthopedic doctor for the first 4 months due to the lockdown situation in Manila Philippines. Saw a doctor, and then did a follow up physical therapy course of 12 sessions. There was good improvement after that ( plus continued doing daily excercise ) but then some of the stiffness returned. I was planning to see the doc again when I thought I would try using the heat pad several times a day just to see if it helped. Its made a big difference and so now I exercise and use the heat pad at least 4 or 5 times a day. The discomfort is still there on occasions, and I wake up evey night with various twinges and pain spurts but overall its something that I can live with. T his video is one of the best on this subject that I have seen and Im sure like many of the commenters here, weve all seen PLENTY of "frozen shoulder videos".

Excellent video. Finally someone who is straight to the point and actually understands frozen shoulder. The exercises were great! Too many other 'experts' demonstrate exercises that aren't specific to frozen shoulder and just show some generic shoulder stretches without really understanding the anatomy of the shoulder. You clearly know what you are talking about and apply the principles of movement that are specific to the injury. Thankyou.

I want to thank you so much for this video! I have been dealing with a very painful frozen shoulder for several months and I've been doing exercises based on the principles you explain here for the past few days and I've already seen a significant increase in my range of motion! A few days ago I couldn't lift my arm past parallel and this morning after doing the exercises I was able to reach my arm all the way over above my head. It's still a bit painful but I can imagine if I'm consistent with these exercises throughout the day, before long I'll be able to be pain-free and have restored my full function again.

@@PrecisionWellbeing Oh Ashley, I did not recieve any notification about your answer but I came again to your video for sharing it. Well, it is funny you mentioned the process could last 26 months and that in same way it begins out of the blue, it also goes; I must say that was a good touch, it gave me a bit more confidence. I used no weight, nor ball, stick against the wall was really helpful to move it backwards, crossing arm behind body was very difficult. External rotation with stick was also very effective. Layed on opposite side, to stretch forwars and trying to let arm hang backwards(in the beginning and later stretching) was also very helpful. The point as you mention is stretching, but I rather would say it is needed to feel as much pain as you may stand, not drastically but slowly increasing tension and keeping it for a while. In January, four months after this began, I sometimes felt almost disabled, but as I have taken your statement that shoulder would recover and of course my own believe, kept on working every day. I went twice to acupunture sessions which seemed not to help at all (I believe it is good, do not take this in wrong way, please, but not in this case) and from then on I began on practicing, constantly, intense breathing exercises. I also tryed to stretch arm in the whole range around shoulder, slowly but making as much effort as I could stand. Holding on door frame as high as possible and turning hips was another practice. In May I could rise the arm staight high, still with a bit of pain and a month later I managed hanging from a sort of trapeze that I hanged and had been rising little by little, just to keep on stretching up. I still feel a bit of pain while hanging for one minute or so, but the feeling is now I am recovered, so I must thank you again for your support! Hugs!!

I feel your pain, literally and figuratively. I’ve always been active and for this to happen out of the blue breaks my heart. Not to mention I’m not even in the 40-65 years age range 😞

I just fully released my shoulder today. I attempted to feel all the muscles up my spine, zipping it up sort of. I'm not sure if a vertebrae moved or if it was just the brain connecting to a particular muscle but somehow it was just suddenly unstuck. I believe frozen shoulder (and spine) is just your central nervous system's way of telling you that you don't feel safe. I've been working toward the lifestyle changes you suggest among others and my frozen body has gotten less so. Today I did something adult and an hour later felt the need to access a part of my spine I had not previously. And wah-la. I am cured. I do feel that it could sieze up again at any time, however. But I do think that's in my brain more than my body.

This is the one thing among stretching that has resulted in the most release for me, figuring out the root cause, actually activating and feeling out the muscles that havent been used, where they start, where they end. through thinking deeply about my situation and the body, i've been better able to understand where and why its still like this and that has resulted in the most movement and release in my experience. things that stem back to my childhood that have been held in, once released, ive felt significant "pressure" off my back and now its just spending time thinking deeply enough to find the next thing i need to let go of. its been a beautiful yet painful experience over all, knowing what i know now i feel i wouldn't have it any other way, my new innerstanding of pain and emotions and energy is too profound, it out weighs the years i've spent hurting.

i am about 8 weeks in now, i'm about 6 weeks into the frozen stage. been doing a lot of exercising the shoulder, both at home, and at physical therapy. the shoulder has went from 20% motion and pain spikes of tremendous pain, to about 55% motion with a constant ache on a pain level of 2 of 10. i'm not giving up, but do feel like i hit some type of "wall".

Thank you for the video. I had a frozen shoulder 5 years ago. Freezing phase for 2 months, frozen phase for 4 months and intense physical therapy, and then thawing phase for 4 more months. Pain was excrutiating, sleeping only on my good side with hugging a pillow in front of me. I'm now developing frozen shoulder on the other side. No injury, no inderlying cause, just a middle aged woman. I am so sad knowing fully how tough the recovery road is ahead of me, again. I wish good luck to all of us.

I am a middle age woman as well and going through menopause. I read that menopausal woman get frozen shoulder and this pain is so excruciating. I have been doing these exercises and they have helped a lot. I have great range of motion but the pain is still there unfortunately. Been dealing with this for almost a year now and will be so happy when this goes away. It is terrible.

@tracy r nelson Tracy, sorry to hear you are going through it also. With my second frozen shoulder, I ended up just resting when I had pain and not doing any exercises. When the pain subsided I just did a lot of gardening, cleaning, etc. but still no dedicated exercises. The quality of life is much better like this in comparison to the first frosen shoulder when I kept pushing into the range of motion exercises. Best wishes to you for speedy recovery.

Kat, your not being a baby, this is real and so painful! I'm up at 2am due to pain. Heat helps me then I do the best I can on the stretches. Mine is from broken wrist, had 2 surgeries, so I really protected my wrist/hand! Too much protection, I didn't move it much. It's slowly thawing out! You will get through this WE ALL CAN GET THROUGH THIS WITH THIS NICE GENTLEMAN'S GUIDANCE 🙆‍♀️.

I’ll be watching this multiple times to remind myself of the exercises.

Don't worry, atrophy will happen if you're not using your muscles. But be patient and get your shoulder working properly again and then gradually build the muscle up from there. You can do it! Best wishes, Ashley
