What's the difference between and osteopath and a chiropractor?
This is another one of the most common question I get asked as an osteopath working in North Finchley, London. Almost every patient coming in to the clinic asks this at some point during their treatments.
There is no clear cut answer to this question as there is a huge overlap between therapies, so this can only be answered in general terms.
Physiotherapists tend to work within the NHS, quite often under the direction of a surgeon or doctor. Physiotherapists tend to be more exercise prescriptive in their approach with the aim of strengthening a particular body part or retraining function.
Physio's will often use equipment such as TENS (Trans Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation) or Ultrasound to help with injuries, but are often less hands on with patients.
Osteopaths are usually in private practice, with only a handful working in the NHS and will normally be working alone. Osteopaths are predominantly hands on and don't use much equipment at all in their treatments, relying on techniques such as massage, joint mobilisations and joint manipulations.
Ultimately, you need to find a practitioner who you get on with and who treats you in a way that suits your body. If you don't feel comfortable with the practitioner or the way the treatment feels then you won't respond as quickly.
If you have any questions stick them in the comments section below or please don't hesitate to give us a call at the clinic on 0203 356 7060 or email info@precisionwellbeing.co.uk.

A chiro, an osteopath, a myotgerapist, a massage therapist and an exercise physiologist combined represent 50-60% of what a physiotherapist can do. Physiotherapist deal with fractures and moulding casts, women’s health, cardiopulmonary, burns, lymphoedmea, hand therapy, neurological rehab, post surgical intervention which non of the above professions can deal with

Check the manipulative research over the last ten years, specifically JOSPT. Physical therapists have been performing graded joint mobilizations (including HVLA thrust manipulation) for years. I perform these techniques along with PROM stretching, MET and soft tissue mobilization in my every day practice. Physical therapists pair these techniques with modalities, specific exercises and activities, all in effort to treat the whole person and return them to an optimal level of function. The philosophies are all over emphasized and we need to become more paitent-centric, and most importantly carry a large tool box to better give patients what they want.

This is completely wrong... PTs often see many patients in acute pain as well as those at the subacute and chronic stages... Manual therapy is also indicated in many private practices.

I am really confused and don't know who to visit or what to say! I don't even know if I need treatment. First I have a stiff neck and I am almost always leaning with my head to the front and force my self to stand or sit straight, second, when I move my left leg up and down I feel like something is cracking in my back (I have this for years now) and sometimes I feel my left knee is weak because I feel it can't carry my weight and almost about to fell down but I don't fall and get up again ( this is random) Do I need to see an Osteopath, a Chiropractor or a Physical Therapist? or maybe there is nothing wrong with me? please give me an advice. Thanks.

I'm in a similar situation as you! I have shoulder pain that comes and go. Everyone just seems to tell you you need _____ depending on whether they are a Physiotherapist / Osteopath/ whatever. It's not just confusing, it's frustrating and infuriating especially we are the ones in pain!

Any half decent private physio (of which there are several thousand in the UK) would use "hands on" techniques such as deep tissue massage, myofascial release, spinal mobilisations/manipulations, passive stretching and a number of other hands on techniques to treat patients. The use of machinery in private practice is now very old fashioned as the evidence behind it's use is weak. There are so many physios taking postgraduate courses in manipulative techniques and manual therapy that there is barely any distinction anymore between physios and osteopaths.

Thank you, that was very helpful - I was booked to see a physio but couldn't make that appointment; he then changed it to see an osteo who was available. I was somewhat confused as I have terrible left foot pain at the outer ankle that radiates to the bottom of the heel area- it is Peroneal tendonitis - the pain brings tears to my eyes. I pray the osteo can help with a resolution. I wasted a lot of money seeing a chiropractic who offered nothing but a lesson on the foot anatomy, tempted to ask for my money back.

I went to a few sessions with physiotherapist at the public hospital. The exercises are tedious n doesnt seem to work. I felt better when she does cracks n pressure release.but they dont last...should I go back or try osteopathy instead? (granted im lazy with the exercise)

+RonLarhz hi Ron, yes it may help trying an osteopath. I suggest continuing with the 3 exercises that you find the most beneficial and forget the rest. The more you do in between sessions the quicker you will see a difference so keep doing your homework!

Hi guys will graduate from PT , is there any way that I can apply to osteopathic school or chiropractor school after PT school ?? Pls I need help
@PrecisionWellbeing
@PrecisionWellbeing 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Shahad yes you shouldn't have much problem applying to an osteopathic school (I assume the same with a Chiro school too). If you don't have the necessary qualifications they may just put you through a couple of weeks of study to catch up. I'm basing this on the UK schools but I don't know what the requirements are elsewhere. Hope that helps, Ashley

Precision Wellbeing Group I really need help with deciding which one to pick. I’m going to study either one this year in a London uni (London south bank uni - Physio, British college of osteopathic medicine - Osteopathy) but I’m really struggling to decide which one is right for me. Also out of curiosity which one usually gets paid more? It’s so hard to see for either one how much they earn. Does osteopathy give out exercise programs for rehabilitation? I know Physiotherapy focuses a lot on the program/exercise side of things

sounds like no difference between physical therapist and osteopathy at least in the united states. we do everything that you are describing that an osteopath does and more.

Did you ever get your back sorted in the end? I think there will be funding for osteopathy in the NHS eventually, but not any time soon!
