Originally, Dutch was supposed to beat the Predator in their "man to man" fight because that's what everybody expects from Arnie, but it was Arnie himself who said "I can't beat him. He's a monster. I'm just a man," so it was rewritten with Dutch losing the fight and having to use his wits to prevail. When I read that, I couldn't help thinking of how certain contemporary action stars' egos could never bear being shown getting their asses kicked on screen.

Masterstroke decision. Thank goodness they realized just how more bad-ass the movie became when Arnie is taking a beating and his planning and cunning (using *every* tool and trick he can muster) is the difference that lets him barely eke out a win.

I read somewhere that Billy's father was a powerful sharman, like his father before him, and his father before him. But Billy not only didn't believe in it but spurned their beliefs. The little bag around his neck he was playing with was given to him by his father when he was a child. His excellent tracking skills come from his father and the fact he could sense and even kind of see where the Predator was were supposed to be signs of him inheriting "their gift", even if he rejected it.

The reason Arnold's arm didn't get blown off is because Predator shot his rifle. The shrapnel from the gun exploding is what caused his arm to bleed. When he's pulling himself out of the water you can see the resulting flesh wound.

While the same tactic with Dillon, he lost his arm due to a small weapon.
@ultimagameboy
@ultimagameboy 2 жыл бұрын
@@richardjohnson5435 With Dillon the plasma bolt hit his actual arm and not the SMG, though. Later with Dutch the Pred tried the same thing but it was more of a snap-shot with less time/aiming involved, thus the plasma bolt didn't actually connect with Dutch's arm, but instead hit his assault rifle and blew it apart, resulting in the shrapnel flesh wound in Dutch's arm.
@OpenMawProductions

Yeah. You can actually see it if you go frame-by-frame. The actual design of his rifle changes subtlely and when he gets hit the gun breaks in half.
@slchance8839
@slchance8839 2 жыл бұрын
Also, Arnold shoots LEFT of the tree, Predator evades RIGHT side of the tree, so Arnold's rifle is now BETWEEN the two, shielding Arnold's arm, and the gun takes the blast, NOT Arnold's arm. That, and I think the Predator took a quick "hip shot" instead of taking his time and lining it up.
@vamthedestroyer
@vamthedestroyer 2 жыл бұрын
Took me years to see it, but you can actually see his rifle blow apart from being hit. The stock and lower receiver blow off separately. When I seen it first, I was a kid, it wasn’t until Blu-ray that I was able to actually slow it down and clearly see it.

One of the coolest things that goes unnoticed in this movie is the set-up to show how much of a well-oiled machine the squad is with their raid to take out that camp. They do it so flawlessly with no one getting killed and with perfect teamwork, but then you have this predator that dispatches them like they are nothing. It just shows how advanced he is compared to the elite soldiers. It really makes you feel hopeless for these soldiers during the movie with that comparison. Also this movie has zero wasted shots... It's constant when looking into the jungle and stuff. The moment you think Arnold gets a break jumping down in the water, the tension just stays on ... It's so freaking good

Predator had the exact same effect on my wife as it has on Hannah. Really thought she wouldn't like it that much, but it draws you in because it's more about the characters and their fear and increasing helplessness than it is about the traditional Eighties action tropes. It actually misleads you by having the first major action scene being DELIBERATELY over the top 'Eighties-ness' and then it suddenly gets much more psychological and eerie, and before you realize what's happened you feel like you're right there in the jungle with them, being hunted.
@Soulsphere001
@Soulsphere001 Жыл бұрын
I also like that a lot of eighties action movies didn't take themselves overly seriously. That could be a very important reason why earlier action movies are more memorable than more recent ones. They're not afraid to have more comical moments.

When I joined the Army and qualified expert on the M16 and the Grenade, I was issued the exact looking rifle that Arnold carries in this movie. I added an ACOG but I love seeing Arnie carrying the same rifle I carried for many years. This movie is full on Strength and male dominance and I fucking love it. This is what we looked up to in the 80s. Strong men and awesomeness. The Native American, Billy, whose real name is Sonny Landham lived 10 miles from my house and grew up here. I know he moved for acting but he is from just around two roads away from my home. He used to go to the gun shows around Kentucky here and signed autographs and he played cards in my dads poker group on weekends. He was a great guy. I'm not sure, but I think he passed away awhile back. He loved to act all serious and then laugh when he scared you, lol. Big man, but even bigger heart. Gave a lot to charity to poor families here in Ky.

The actor who played the general starred in one of Arnold's first films, it's called " Stay Hungry " ; Arnold was still Mr. Olympia and the director had him lose weight for the camera. The closer the project came to its end, the more Arnold was regaining his competitive size so he could defend his title for the sixth and record breaking time..at the same time he was gearing up to film his breakthrough film that chronicled the Mr. Olympia competition known as Pumping Iron. Five years later, he would regain his title in Sydney, Australia and immediately after begin filming Conan the Barbarian. The rest is history.

I think why predator was so amazing was it’s pacing. From the early part of the movie, you know they are being hunted. But the predator is smart. Calculated. Takes his time to wait for a perfect moment to strike and retreat. And they were wise enough to have him cloaked for the majority. Only seeing little glimpses here and there until the end. It’s a slow, menacing burn of a movie, which encourages your mind to conjure all sorts of possibilities as to what the creature could be! It’s an example that you can trust your audience to make their own conclusions…don’t need to explain/show everything. Best sci-fi/horror movie of all time next to alien/s. Both held in high esteem! Thanks for watching it!

No, it's meant to be a visual retelling of what they found earlier on, in that they figured out that the guys that they found strung up had been firing in every direction in panic and hit nothing, which they have now also just done. It's meant to show weakness, or at least vulnerability, not strength. However, they do throw in the glimmer of hope in that they did manage to at least make it bleed. Its an excellent framing device, because while they are crapping themselves that they didn't actually hit anything, we as the audience know that they actually did.

Hey Ash, heads up. I'm sure you didn't know that the idea for the Predator creature came from the master himself. James Cameron. Stan Winston (the other cinema legend) asked Cameron for some advice on the concept art, since Winston was stuck on how to create the look. Cameron told him his idea and even gave him a sketch to crystallize the concept. A LEGEND in all phases of movie making and storytelling.
@OpenMawProductions

That's mostly how it came to be. They were on a plane having lunch and Stan Winston was talking to Jim about having to hastily redesign this creature. And JIm gave Stan the initial idea "I've always wanted to see something with mandibles..." To which Stan says he hastily started to scribble down ideas that were then handed off to his, rather legendary team. The netting the Predator war came from a novelty net from a grocery store. All of his littler bones are from a taxidermy place in California. One of the key creators still has a lot of the unused bits in his garage.

The Predator's POV was supposed to be filmed with an IR camera, but the shots came out all white due to the 40°C+ temperature filming in Puerto Vallarta so the effect was edited in in post. Jean-Claude Van Damme originally played the Predator in a dumb-looking shrimp-lizard costume, but wasn't comfortable in it and bailed as soon as he got the chance. Kevin Peter Hall (RIP) was cast as the Predator with Stan Winston (RIP) redesigning the costume.

Arnold was a professional body builder for many years and held the title Mr. Universe. I think his first movie was Hercules Goes to New York in 1970, but didn't really start his film career until the late 1970's. 1984's Terminator was what REALLY made him an action star, more so than Conan the Barbarian he had made a couple of years before.

GET TO DA CHOPPA!!! MY #1 FAVORITE ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER MOVIE! Facts you didn't know about the movie: Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie, but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit which looked like a lizard insect hybrid. He even wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused. Kevin Peter Hall, RIP, was cast as the titular character as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch, being 7'2". He even plays the helicopter pilot at the end. Oscar Winning VFX company Stan Winston Studios designed the PREDATOR suit for the movie and would later return to the franchise for PREDATOR 2 in 1990. Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches like Spielberg and Ford on Raiders Of The Lost Ark. They wouldn't eat hot meals due to the heatwave in Mexico so they are protein bars. Schwarzenegger would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed. The producers hired a bodyguard to protect people from Sonny Landham, RIP, whom played Billy, as he was prone to violent outbursts. Landham said in an interview that, "We weren't making a movie, it was a survival story for all of us." It was 110° in the shade while it was 42° at night. It rained for 2 weeks making filming even more difficult. It was a box office success, making $100 million dollars ($350 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to InnerSpace. It's now considered to be one of the best Sci-fi Action movies ever made.

"the way we describe his muscles and manliness." but can ya blame them. Like when Carl Weather calls it "boyscout bullshit" then helps out you get to see him flexing besides Arnie. Beautiful. Same when watching Rocky doing that run by the bay with the ship in the background before the classic steps scene. You can't see the muscles but you watch him kick it up a notch or two. Much different than admiring an animal, muscles in motion, like say a beautiful horse. Impressive and the possibility you too could get hem gains if you wanted. It just motivates you in some way. Some caveman lizard brain instinct when ya see all the big guys working hard and on the hunt. You wanna be strong and right there with them. If it bleeds we can kill it!

A spiritual predecessor to this that also stars Arnold Schwarzenegger is Commando from 1985. His other film released that year was The Running Man. Besides the first two Terminator films, I also recommend watching Pumping Iron and Conan the Barbarian. This spawned three sequels, a prequel, comics, graphic novels and videogames, some of which crossover with the Alien franchise. Director John Mctiernan followed this up with Die Hard. Arnold Schwarzenegger was a seven time winner of the Mr. Olympia bodybuilding title. This has the same composer as Back to the Future

Ash might already know this, but the first guy they cast as the predator was Jean Claude Van Damme and the creature design was totally different. It was originally intended to look more insect-like, but they quickly realised that it looked bit shit so decided to go in a different direction. Plus, Van Damme started acting like a dickhead on set once he realised nobody would see his face.

So he had to tap out after 2 days. He couldn't wake up 5am, lift weights for an hour and then shoot a movie for 10 hours. He had to tap out

I was around five years old when my brother and I brought this movie over to our close family friend’s house for a sleepover. Their son put the movie in and we started watching it. Unbeknownst to us they were having family come over from Iran and visit them in Southern California. They were making dinner while we were watching and one by one the family members got hooked on the movie and by the end, they were all watching it with us. When Dutch says his line “You are one ugly….”at the end everyone gasped and looked at us horrified. We just told them that we’d seen it before and American kids are used to that kid of language. For months after this, we would play Predator where I’d take out my family and friend one by one until a sleeping bag would be dropped on my head.

The scene where they all shoot into the jungle at the predator is a real military tactic. One where if they are not 100% sure where the enemy fire is coming from, all of them will lay as much return fire as they can in that general direction.

I think you nailed it when describing the different characteristics you derive from both Alien and Predator as watching experiences. With Alien it's like Ridley Scott saying "sit down, be quiet, and slowly absorb this cinematography," as he makes really suspensful art out of a B-movie premise. With Predator it's like John McTiernan saying "strap yourself in and get pumped for this roller-coaster ride!" as he perfectly blends action and sci-fi and suspense out of a B-movie premise. Both are excellent films that are greater than the sum of their individual parts; they just don't make them like this anymore. Can't wait for The Terminator - another GOAT movie from the same bygone era of cinema!
