At the time, audiences and critics were generally speaking confused about the message. Some got the social satire, hammy acting as well as the cartoonish violence. But the majority took it at face value and found it dumb violence and promoting fascism. A small minority found it a bad adaptation of the book. I for one think it's a masterpiece of subversive art.

@@VerowakReacts Well US exceptionalism was at full power. After Reagan and Bush, being militaristic was not seen as a bad thing. Verhoeven, being a child of WW2 and under occupation of fascists was fascinated how US media was not so different. There are also tiny details that most will still miss after years; veterans all physically disabled, a black man whipping a white person, Shijumi saying an education costing an arm and a leg etc. Even if it is layed on thick, people will be willfully ignorant

One of the things that amazed me about the CGI in Starship Troopers is that the bugs look _heavy_ -- they look like they have actual mass. Other movies that came years before it (like Terminator 2) also did CGI well. But there were plenty of movies that came after T2 that just wanted CGI for CGI's sake, and one of the mistakes they made was that their CGI objects looked mass-less.

It's still kinda hard for me to believe that people who had been professional movie critics for a while at the time failed to see the satire on militarism and fascism in this. It's not like they talk about the "failure of democracy" in the beginning, that "service guarantees citizenship", that you need a license to have children... and obviously it's not like you have people running around in what could easily pass for Gestapo and SS Uniforms. In reference to his first big role as the chlid prodigy "Doogie Howser", the cast and crew apparently had a nickname for Neil Patrick Harris on set - they called him Doogie Himmler 😂

It's even harder to believe, that ANYONE would find a single fascistic thing in this film. The Federation is a polar opposite of fascism. Verhoven didn't read the book - he just asked Neumeyer for a summary, and then he tried to make a satire of fascism, by basing the society in his film on a genuine democratic utopia, and it backfired spectacularly. Even if Verhoven deliberately left out part of the oath the characters take "to uphold, and defend the constitutional liberties of all citizens, and other lawful residents of the Federation". The uniforms is about the extent of fascism in this film. And the book, half of which is dedicated to what Verhoven tried doing in a single scene (in the classroom) explains well this "faliure of democracy". Basically, it comes down to the fact that when voting rights were universal, people didn't appreciate the value of what they had (since the cost to acquire something is an integral part of its value). Then they became convinced they could get something for free, simply by voting for it, which tended to result in electing unworthy politicians who promised them things. And then there's the problem of responsibility. Political authority that comes from the right to vote, and influence the politics of the state has to be balanced with an equal responsibility. In Heinlein's words - to permit irresponsible authority is to sow disaster; to make a man responsible for something he does not control, is to behave with blind idiocy. When people were not responsible for how they voted, they could vote for anything. And if they voted for the impossible, then the inevitable happened, and suddenly they had to take responsibility they didn't want, resulting from the choices they made. Which is why franchise (the only benefit of citizenship) has to be earned through service, by accepting ultimate responsibility for the state, if you wish to have authority over it. As for license to have children, that's one of the dumbest lines in the film, added willy-nilly, and never explained, or explored. The way the government runs things, which is very hands-off, they have no way (that was shown) of enforcing such a ban - there is no strict government control of resources, services, or anything like that. What there is, is plenty of people who seem to have no trouble whatsoever, having babies - Rico's parents (both civilians), Breckenridge (farmers) has a large family. Shujumi got into Harvard, but couldn't afford tuition. Yet even in the movie, it is clearly stated that the right to vote is not simply a reward for doing federal service, and being "loyal". It's literally a mandate to use violence - you don't reward people with permission for violence. It's a responsibility, allowed only for those who have accepted responsibility for the authority they are entrusted with.
@dnish6673
@dnish6673 20 күн бұрын
@@jakubfabisiak9810 You are a shallow thinker. How long do you think the Federation existed, and what makes you think Rico's parents weren't citizens in the movie? Heinlein had really screwed up views and his "glibertarianism" was phony.

@jakubfabisiak9810 20 күн бұрын
@@dnish6673 the Federation has existed for "generations" at that point. And it's obvious Rico's parents were not citizens (in the film, his father is very much against doing federal service. In the book, it is explicitly stated, and he later enlists). The only thing you've proven is that you're one of those who shouldn't be allowed to vote. The message of the book is clear - authority and responsibility have to be equal, and voting rights have to be earned to truly appreciate their value. People that oppose this idea are exactly the kind of freeloaders who want authority without responsibility, and they fear that they would either lose their privileges, or else have to pay the cost of acquisition.

About your "better weapons" : I think the word is "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Humans did not encounter any aliens they could not kill with conventional weapons, so they just kept using the same thing that works. Notice that they have a kind of gun that shoots a huge explosion at the end : "we've got the weapons". They finally realized the universe is more dangerous than they thought. About the critics score vs audience score : There has been a controversy about wether this movie were an apology to facism or not. Of course, everyone who knows Verhoeven or just looked for subtext see it's a harsh critique of facism and how a nice young man can become a ruthless killing machine who do not hesitate to sacrifice soldiers for the "good of humanity".

One thing that amuses me about Starship Troopers is that it's intended to be a satire on the "rah rah obliterate the alien other" style war movie, but it has spawned a movie series that generally drops the satire in favor of the righteous action. Well as crappy as the sequels are they are more true to the book. Heinleins book "Starship Troopers" is often misconstrued as "Fascist" but if you read it no one in the Federation is oppresed. Citizens are still allowed to own businesses, gain wealth and generally lead a productive life. Its just that Voting is limited to those who actually are willing to put their time and lives on the line for the entire Federation. While the military is the primary way Citizenship is also extended to Police/Firefighters and really anyone who uses their time and efforts to better the federation, even voluteering to help other citizens may qualify one for Citizenship. Its a critique, and a thought exercise of what happens when those who have no "skin in the game" have a say and what comes out when things are restruchered to where only those who have paid in get to make the big decisions.

Hello Miss Verowak!😊 I always talk about the Verhoeven unofficial trilogy of futuristic violent films. This one bring the last with the most mixture of practical effects and CGI. "Robocop" (1987) was first, and "Total Recall" (1990) was second with much of the films in practical effects, which are really in right now. "Hollow Man" (2000) was considered a bit of a disappointment when it came out, unfortunately. Verhoeven thought that most people really didn't get the overall story here. We actually started the war, by putting a base on a planet the bugs had already settled. Notice we never make any attempts to communicate with the bugs and settle the war peacefully. Our side has been compared to a fascist military force in history. Johnny would be considered enlisted personnel, and Carmen and Carl would be considered officers by today's military standards. You might recognize Jake Busey (Ace). He was the crazy religious guy in "Contact" that blew up the first machine.😉 Great reactions to your very first Verhoeven film, Vero!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I believe the sequels were direct to video, and considered a cash grab. I remember seeing this in the theater. When I walked out I had enjoyed the movie and had even spoke out during just before the anti-ship bugs had launched the "goop" into space. I said loudly "Oh no! Bug farts!" the entire theater laughed. After getting to my car I turned to the others with me and said" That was the best worst bug movie I've ever seen."

Sorry, I know I'm a little late on this, and might've already been beaten to it, but at the risk of sounding repetitive... for starters, this is an adaptation of the novella by Robert Heinlein, who is considered one of the top few, most predominant post WW2 scifi writers. A lot of the original novella is actually him just philosophizing about ideas and concepts about society, politics, etc., which does not translate very well to a visual medium, and is why it's a good example of hiw novel writing and screenwriting are really two separate art forms, but that didn't stop Paul Verhoeven from filling in the blanks, and making it very much like a Paul Verhoeven movie instead. The reason why a lot of these quotes sound so familiar isn't because they came from this movie, but because they are very cliche quotes. Who knows the exact origin of "The only good bug is a dead bug" line. My guess is that it, or something like it has been used as long as one group of people hated another group of people, and justified treating them horribly by dehumanizing them as not worthy of being treated as any better. Personally, the most familiar historical example that I'm familiar with involves substituting "indian" in place of "bug". Now, I'm a Marine, so I would definitely attribute the origin of "Come on you sons of bitches! You want to live forever?" to Dan Daly, who short version, is one of the three most legendary Marines in the history of The United States Marine Corps, and was basically the original bad ass mother fucker, who supposedly said that during the Battle of Belleau Wood in World War 1, as he lead his Marines out of the trenches! But who knows if he was really the first, or that he said it at all?

Heinlein wrote Starship Troopers as a protest against the "peace at any cost" crowd. Like a lot of his writing, it's a trese on his libertarian political beliefs. But the writers of this movie just bought the rights to the novel when their story had too many elements of the Heinlein novel. Verhoven never read the whole book and considered it fascist. The controversy of Starship Troopers being a fascist tome is one of those classic debates. Heinlein wrote Stranger in a Strange Land after writing this which gave him legions of hippie fans in the 1960s. Thus the essential dichotomy of Heinlein. The novel was more of a call of service than a fascist tome. The US service academies have them on their reading list because of this service ideology. But the debate still rages. Heinlein was a Naval officer and his novel started a whole sub gerene of military science fiction. His co Ed military world was a change though. Women served as pilots and other roles, but not in combat in the original novel.

As a european, i perfectly understood the huge critic of american militarism and imperialism it is. It s a politic movie. At the end , you even can see nazi like uniform on the soldier. The imperialism is shown with the will to invade the planet of the bugs for the ressources. Paul Verhoeven is one of the master of cinema, with a lot of creativity and a deep political message. Don t forget "basic instinct", so well done disturbing movie.

The best definition I ever hear for camp, is that it's comedic but played 100% straight. Think of how serious Adam West and Burt Ward are in the old Batman TV series, the epitome of camp. Starship Troopers is definitely campy. But there's a line somewhere, I think, because American Werewolf In London is also a comedy played straight, but it's somehow not campy. Maybe the type of comedy makes a difference?

I think the reason why RTs score differ from critic to audience is because when it came out, it was delayed numerous times. I think it was almost a year until it was finally released. Because I always remembered seeing the trailer and waiting in anticipation for it to be released.....watching trailer....again, and again, and again. And when it was finally released, a lot of us didn't expect this type of filming. And I do recall it didn't fill seats in the theater. And one last thing, it was supposed to be a summer movie but got pushed ALL the way into the fall. When people were looking forward to more "homely" type of movies. No one wanted to see blood and gore during the holidays back then. It didn't get big until home video and when it became a cult classic. I did love it when it came out. But the wait and delays hurt the release of the film.
