One of the things that amazed me about the CGI in Starship Troopers is that the bugs look _heavy_ -- they look like they have actual mass. Other movies that came years before it (like Terminator 2) also did CGI well. But there were plenty of movies that came after T2 that just wanted CGI for CGI's sake, and one of the mistakes they made was that their CGI objects looked mass-less.

At the time, audiences and critics were generally speaking confused about the message. Some got the social satire, hammy acting as well as the cartoonish violence. But the majority took it at face value and found it dumb violence and promoting fascism. A small minority found it a bad adaptation of the book. I for one think it's a masterpiece of subversive art.

@@VerowakReacts Well US exceptionalism was at full power. After Reagan and Bush, being militaristic was not seen as a bad thing. Verhoeven, being a child of WW2 and under occupation of fascists was fascinated how US media was not so different. There are also tiny details that most will still miss after years; veterans all physically disabled, a black man whipping a white person, Shijumi saying an education costing an arm and a leg etc. Even if it is layed on thick, people will be willfully ignorant

A vote for "Total Recall", not only it's one of the best sci-fi ideas of all-time, but it was also filmed in Mexico City, and I lived there many years and recognize many of the no-spoiler city scenes. They didn't even change some of the neon signs and many spots are instantly recognizable. Great use of modern sets to make it look sci-fi on a budget.

You're in for a real treat with Robocop and Total Recall (Hollow Man not so much). Maybe try out Basic Instinct as well if you haven't seen it. One thing that amuses me about Starship Troopers is that it's intended to be a satire on the "rah rah obliterate the alien other" style war movie, but it has spawned a movie series that generally drops the satire in favor of the righteous action. Personally I think this movie doesn't hit its satire quite as effectively as it wanted to. Also, JUSTICE FOR DIZZY!

Well as crappy as the sequels are they are more true to the book. Heinleins book "Starship Troopers" is often misconstrued as "Fascist" but if you read it no one in the Federation is oppresed. Citizens are still allowed to own businesses, gain wealth and generally lead a productive life. Its just that Voting is limited to those who actually are willing to put their time and lives on the line for the entire Federation. While the military is the primary way Citizenship is also extended to Police/Firefighters and really anyone who uses their time and efforts to better the federation, even voluteering to help other citizens may qualify one for Citizenship. Its a critique, and a thought exercise of what happens when those who have no "skin in the game" have a say and what comes out when things are restruchered to where only those who have paid in get to make the big decisions.

About your "better weapons" : I think the word is "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Humans did not encounter any aliens they could not kill with conventional weapons, so they just kept using the same thing that works. Notice that they have a kind of gun that shoots a huge explosion at the end : "we've got the weapons". They finally realized the universe is more dangerous than they thought. About the critics score vs audience score : There has been a controversy about wether this movie were an apology to facism or not. Of course, everyone who knows Verhoeven or just looked for subtext see it's a harsh critique of facism and how a nice young man can become a ruthless killing machine who do not hesitate to sacrifice soldiers for the "good of humanity".

I think the reason why RTs score differ from critic to audience is because when it came out, it was delayed numerous times. I think it was almost a year until it was finally released. Because I always remembered seeing the trailer and waiting in anticipation for it to be released.....watching trailer....again, and again, and again. And when it was finally released, a lot of us didn't expect this type of filming. And I do recall it didn't fill seats in the theater. And one last thing, it was supposed to be a summer movie but got pushed ALL the way into the fall. When people were looking forward to more "homely" type of movies. No one wanted to see blood and gore during the holidays back then. It didn't get big until home video and when it became a cult classic. I did love it when it came out. But the wait and delays hurt the release of the film.

This movie is perhaps the #1 example of 'the book is better than the movie' for me. A sci-fi novel written in 1959 and a very good one. With concepts about the obligations of citizenship and service that were insightful enough that the book has at times been part of the curriculum of the US Military Academy at West Point. It also had Scifi concepts innovative enough that Marvel Comics 'borrowed' them for a prominent Avenger in the 1960's who would go on to star in much better movies than this in the 21st Century. It deserved a much better treatment that this...a barely adequate popcorn action B-Movie...I suggest enjoying the book.

Physical kinetic bullets are reliable, and are likely to damage anything. Other weapons (lasers, sonic - not that I know much about them, but from other sci fi) often have something that they don't have an effect on. Besides - "force, my friend, is violence. The supreme authority from which all other authorities are derived." Blunt force trauma fits that mentality really well.

Sorry, I know I'm a little late on this, and might've already been beaten to it, but at the risk of sounding repetitive... for starters, this is an adaptation of the novella by Robert Heinlein, who is considered one of the top few, most predominant post WW2 scifi writers. A lot of the original novella is actually him just philosophizing about ideas and concepts about society, politics, etc., which does not translate very well to a visual medium, and is why it's a good example of hiw novel writing and screenwriting are really two separate art forms, but that didn't stop Paul Verhoeven from filling in the blanks, and making it very much like a Paul Verhoeven movie instead. The reason why a lot of these quotes sound so familiar isn't because they came from this movie, but because they are very cliche quotes. Who knows the exact origin of "The only good bug is a dead bug" line. My guess is that it, or something like it has been used as long as one group of people hated another group of people, and justified treating them horribly by dehumanizing them as not worthy of being treated as any better. Personally, the most familiar historical example that I'm familiar with involves substituting "indian" in place of "bug". Now, I'm a Marine, so I would definitely attribute the origin of "Come on you sons of bitches! You want to live forever?" to Dan Daly, who short version, is one of the three most legendary Marines in the history of The United States Marine Corps, and was basically the original bad ass mother fucker, who supposedly said that during the Battle of Belleau Wood in World War 1, as he lead his Marines out of the trenches! But who knows if he was really the first, or that he said it at all?

Drill Sargeant Zim is Clancy Brown. His 2 other big parts where as the Kurgan in Highlander and as the head guard in The Shawshank Redemption. But Id bet you and most other people know him, or at least his voice, from somewhere else. To quote the character "I like Money". Yes Clancy Browns probably highest earning job is as the voice of Eugene Krabs on Spongebob Squarepants.

The critics back in the day did not rate this movie so highly. It's only now that people are globbing on to its satirical aspects that they're rating it higher.

Heinlein wrote Starship Troopers as a protest against the "peace at any cost" crowd. Like a lot of his writing, it's a trese on his libertarian political beliefs. But the writers of this movie just bought the rights to the novel when their story had too many elements of the Heinlein novel. Verhoven never read the whole book and considered it fascist. The controversy of Starship Troopers being a fascist tome is one of those classic debates. Heinlein wrote Stranger in a Strange Land after writing this which gave him legions of hippie fans in the 1960s. Thus the essential dichotomy of Heinlein. The novel was more of a call of service than a fascist tome. The US service academies have them on their reading list because of this service ideology. But the debate still rages. Heinlein was a Naval officer and his novel started a whole sub gerene of military science fiction. His co Ed military world was a change though. Women served as pilots and other roles, but not in combat in the original novel.

The best definition I ever hear for camp, is that it's comedic but played 100% straight. Think of how serious Adam West and Burt Ward are in the old Batman TV series, the epitome of camp. Starship Troopers is definitely campy. But there's a line somewhere, I think, because American Werewolf In London is also a comedy played straight, but it's somehow not campy. Maybe the type of comedy makes a difference?

Noticed other movies you're watching and I need to check them out (just one never watched), but I dub you as a Starship Trooper. "Come on you apes, do you want to live forever?" Sorry my meme I do treasure... I'm weird sorry.

1That one thing about this film, which most will say paranoid, but way this film does it, propaganda. Hate to throw this here, it made me aware of our own propaganda. I am conscious enough now to ignore the bs, just give me what one stands for and let me decipher at that point. Again, your first time? Where the hell have you been, lmao. Glad you watch it and enjoy it. It's a fun movie!

While there have been a couple direct to home sequels on this franchise, they are what they are. But what I would recommend is the television show named Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles. Never mind its Y7 rating. There had to be some under-the-table money passed around for that rating, as the DVD set shoots right up to the well earned PG-13... zero editing needed. Using cutting edge (for the time) CGI, it tells the story of the Roughnecks as they fight to win the war against the bugs. (Saying anything beyond that is just spoilers.) It is said they used a Babylon 5 approach to story telling, where the whole series is just one continuous book... and a couple filler episodes mixed in. I was just looking for the Courtmarsial episode that I use as an example of what this series does so well... and I see whole seasons have been pirated in to YT... and they've stuck around. Wonderful.

I remember seeing this in the theater. When I walked out I had enjoyed the movie and had even spoke out during just before the anti-ship bugs had launched the "goop" into space. I said loudly "Oh no! Bug farts!" the entire theater laughed. After getting to my car I turned to the others with me and said" That was the best worst bug movie I've ever seen."

Verowack, you were wondering why the troopers used bullets in their weapons so much when, in the time setting, 168 years from now, the technology would have moved beyond bullets. The answer, I think, is that science fiction about the future is described in the technology of the day. A professor of mine once said, "Jules Verne predicted that people would go to the moon, but he did not predict that we would be watching the moon landing at home on television."

This is one of those movies which got a bad reputation at release for various reasons. Among people who actually gave it a chance it would probably be rated 85 while random people who half watched it and prejudged it gave it 50s.

For the critic vs audience score, I think movie age might also be a factor - this probably was better received when it was released than it is now, and most of the critic reviews are scraped from publications close to release, whereas the audience reviews were submitted after rotten tomatoes became popular.

It is more appreciated now than it was when it came out. Many people didn't get the satire then, and it appeared accidentally cheesy. Now it's widely known.
