Predator 2: The Most Underrated Sequel in the Franchise?

With Prey a runaway hit on Disney’s Hulu streaming service, people are quick to call it the greatest Predator sequel ever. But wait just a second folks - has everyone forgotten about 1990’s Predator 2 starring Danny Glover? Easily the least seen movie in the Predator franchise, this guns-blazing sequel married the urban action genre to the sci-fi/horror vibe of the first movie, and the result is a kick-ass movie that too few action fans have seen. I also liked the jokes that Glover was making. Small and simple and not over the top and not too many of them. “The Predator” couldn’t be taken serious because every actor was cracking jokes with every line.

I stand by the statement that Predator 2 is the best Predator sequel. It added a ton to the lore, new weapons, music tracks now associated with the series, Predator's behavior and code of honor, THE XENO SKULL, The Predator franchise owes a lot to this movie and not just that. The movie is Gritty is hell, the opening alone is pulse racing action and rough has heck in the best way possible. And of course Danny Glover as Mike Harrigan, he's not a super soldier like Arnold but he still takes a Predator head one and manages to come out on top, stabbing the thing with it's own weapon. Hell yeah.

Danny Glover first sees the invisible predator at the beginning of the movie. He doesn't mention it at all to anyone or himself. It just continues to be a bad cop movie. Also, didn't care about anyone except for Danny Glover. Again, the lore, the "rules" of the predator was interesting as we find out they dont kill pregrant women but those things were just sprinkled on top. The ending was awesome. And loved how it tied into the new Prey movie with the gun. But yeah other than that.. eh.

Predator 2 was a great movie because in the end and with few words and visuals it explained a back story about who the predators’ were and how they are elite soldiers proving their devotion,dedication, and pride to be the best of their species.

I kinda like the fact that Dutch (Arnold) or Harrigan (Glover) never reprised their roles , which adds more mystery to their characters. What are the chances of someone meeting an inter galactic alien hunter twice in their life time ? Predator 1 was epic , Predator 2 was very underrated, I only really appreciate P2 now after re-watching it a few years ago.

Even as a precocious child I knew this movie was special... that was many years ago, and I have still yet to see anything like this movie today. The perfect storm that didn't cause a lot of damage, the movie was wonderful but the people weren't ready... So it automatically was going to be a cult classic even amongst Predator fans because I know a lot of friend that dismissed this movie, same age as me, and don't remember the film at all... lol... I'm always happy to show this one again to them...

Even though PREY is awesome, Predator 2 is still my favorite. The subway scene, the penthouse ambush, and the chase were great moments. Plus, Bill Paxton would meet the same fate as he did against the Alien and Terminator (although technically survived).

It’s so crazy this movie gets the hate it does! Why??!!! What about it makes people hate it so badly? Arny didn’t come back, so what did they do? Casted prime Danny Glover, Bill Paxton, pre-crazy Gary Busey, and one of the most badass chicks in film since Ripley in Alien! And did a genius relocation from Jungle to crime ridden city, and gave us some great kills and a excellent story line! Ask anyone who hates this movie but loves the original to give you a honest answer as to why they hate it and it can’t be a petty explanation of Arnold not being in it. I promise you they can’t do it!

The only reason I've heard for it to think it is a bad movie is the fact that ¨how could a tank like Ah-nold barely win but an LA cop like Danny Glover kills the damn beast?¨ I love this movie, and to be honest, when I saw it as a kid I was disappointed at first for not seeing Ah-Nold back. All the other movies got at least one aspect of the franchise wrong. The first one was perfect. The second one was still pretty good. It expanded on the lore wothout contradicting anything that was established before. The only part I didn't 100% appreciate about 2 was that we learn so much about the hunters, that they just aren't that scary anymore. AvP was a fun movie in my opinion. It had a nice lore with a mediocre execution. They should've made it R rated and the Predators face under the mask was just wrong in every way. AvP:R had probably the most skilled Predator but was just really grotesque and too dark. The Predalien was portrayed pretty cool. Predators was really good. The only part I disliked was the typical go bigger route. The supers were still fun to watch. The Predator just fucked up the lore. I think I would've liked it for the no brainer comedy as a stand alone movie, but it just did all the other movies dirty. Plus weird story. Prey I'd say is as good as Predators. At the moment it is a bit overrated, but it was quite a nice movie. There are nitpicks about the movie which I don't like, but there are so many of them that can't be explained with a few sentences.

Let's not forget Glover isn't "getting too old for this shit" in this one. He's taking it to the baddies full bore. It also established the Predator-Alien connection with the Xenomorph skull at the end. That could have played out better but at the time that Easter egg had such potential.

For many reasons why Predator 2 worked splendidly as both sequel and standalone movie is this - it understood same thing that Aliens did. That you can pull reveal ONCE. Among very subtle change in Predator 2, was that there was no point in hiding / slow reveal of Predator and his capabilities to VIEWER - yet, protagonists, were still kept in the dark. Cementary scene with necklace and small boy or Hurrigan leaving phone booth after the call and being on verge of revelation with trophy shop behind him were MASTERFUL. Just like was fact that King Willy - like all characters in first movie - foreshadowed way of his demise in own dialogue.

I think the biggest problem with Predator 2 is how everyone is yelling and sweating for most of the movie, but IMO the movie becomes a lot more focused once it's just Danny Glover pursuing the Predator.

P2 Was my favorite as a kid. It is the one that I say first and multiple times before the 1st. Now it is different than the 1st, and the 1st is great, but I always felt the 2nd was under rated as well

Great essay on Predator 2! I've loved this movie since the early 90's. I had recorded it on to a VHS tape from HBO and it got tons of replay back then! Except Prey, no other sequel has lived up to this and I was excited everytime a new Predator movie came out only to be disappointed at varying levels. Predators almost got it but I can never get past the turn Lawrence Fishburne's character takes. I never would've thought the one that never went to theater would be the one to finally live up to the caliber of what Predator movies should be! Needless to say, Predator 2 was the last really good Predator movie for such a long time! Great job. Keep'em coming!

That would have made that movie SO much more interesting honestly, and could have been the best one made to date. Look at it this way, if Predator 2 came out today, it would not only be considered a good sequel, but probably a great action flick. That's the thing though, in the original when Jungle Hunter takes off his mask to fight Dutch there are parts where he's still seeing in inferred. So it's either both parts made the mistake or none did and the Yaujta can still detect body heat at points without the mask.

Completely agree. Was fortunate to catch in the theater when it premiered and saw several times. There was unfortunately no DVDs or streaming or anything other than VHS rental at the time. First run movies weren’t available to rent for up to a year after release lol.

The interesting thing about Predator 2 is that the story is eerily similar to the first Predator comic series from Dark Horse that was later subtitled "Concrete Jungle". The lead in the comic was the cousin of Dutch Shaefer, a Chicago cop nicknamed 'Shaef'.

This was an excellent video, truly well done. w/ the Success of Prey, it’s been absolutely heartwarming to see Predator 2 get its flowers as a new Generation of Predator fans are introduced to the saga. Predator 2 is a underrated masterpiece for all the reasons you highlighted w/ the absolute best piece of lore & world building at the end. Kevin Peter Hall was outstanding reprising his role as the Predator & Danny Glover was the Black 90’s action star we didn’t deserve, thanks to his fierce battle w/ Ghost (Predator) of the Lost Hunter Clan & the Introduction of Greyback, Borg, Boar, Shaman, Snake, Guardian, Scout, Warrior, & Stalker.. has fascinated us & inspired our imaginations & sparked our love for the deadliest Hunters in the Galaxy. 🕊Rest In Peace Kevin Peter Hall 🕊

I wished they continued the story of The Predators instead of "rebooting" it again. Suffered the same fate as Terminator Salvation. Instead of learning from their mistakes and making a better sequel to the story, they decided to trash the whole thing. Bah.

@@mbogucki1 I agree 👍🏼 They should have stuck with the timeline of either Predator 2 or the Predators instead of destroying the canon with every sequel and prequel. Most fans would have loved to see the history of every predator we saw at the end of Predator 2 especially Elder Predator.

As a young adult when this came out, in Europe at least nobody thought this film underated. The one liners and "memes" were all the rage till the next big action movie came along, So many men under 25 trying to insert "xxxx is my speciality" and "Want some candy"into as many bar/club conversations as possible.

It was a blast, first I saw the second part before the first and I was shocked how second part was much better and shocked that Swartz was on the first part :) And just to realize that Swartz refused to be in part 2 and I realize, it made things even better, it's like a continuation of the saga with a different story, it was a fresh idea at that time, and not continuing with the same character made it scarier, its like there is no way the same character would survive encounter twice with Predators :)

It's awesome, I remember renting it back in the day as a teen and loving it, and nothing's changed since then. It still holds up very well today with its urban setting being surprisingly effective. Plus the Voodoo Posse kicked ass. :D

I love a LOT about Predator 2. Especially Harrigan and Keyes and the City Hunter himself. Bill Paxton is always a treat, even if I have mixed feelings about his character. But this is still tied for my 4th favorite Predator movie, after Predator, Predators, and Prey.

They did pay homage in Prey with the 1718 pistol that Harrigan received from the one of the Predators. A direct tie-in.

Agree 100%. Too many people hate on this just because it’s not the original and isn’t exactly like the original. I love the original predator, but it’s nice to have that story told in a completely different setting with a completely different cast of characters…and for it to still work just as well. I’ll even go a step further and say, depending on the day, I sometimes prefer to watch predator 2 over predator 1

Trivia stuff: the red dot lasers mounted on their handguns were ahead of their time. In 1990, it wasn't a thing yet. That's why these laser attachments were custom made for the film to a look a little bit futuristic (1997), albeit bulky.

I've watched this film a million times. I loved it as a kid. Rate it just as much as the first film.
