The predator examining Dutch to see if there was something different about him. When he sees he was just a man, no tech or tricks, that had gave him a hell of a fight without technology but basically with just his mind and what he could make from the jungle the predator decides to fight him man2man. Or man2pred. Nothing appeared different on the surface so it was like another round of testing to see if this was just a man or some kind of human not encountered before. The Predator had probably never had much of a fight from a human, when he trapped his head between the blades it was like a person trapping a bug or a species to examine it when he could have just killed him instead. For the Yautja, the greatest honor comes from killing dangerous prey and collecting their skulls as trophies. By the time the predator caught up to Dutch at the waters edge, the yautja had seen Dutch as a worthy adversary and therefore grants him the right of a hand-to-hand fight. Killing him outright would have been “acceptable” in terms of their code but it is far more honorable to fight in the purest form of combat. Also, you have to keep in mind that they hunt for trophies to impress their fellow Yautja. All of their hunts are observed by elders and other elites. This Yautja had nothing but honor and a good show in his mind when he decided to fight him hand to hand.

@@SauloPMB it was most likely due to the circumstances of the situation. At the time, Blaine was near his entire unit patrolling in the jungle. Note that each time the predators wrist blades are used, it is when there was only one immediate combatant nearby. Hawkins, Billy, Dillon were the only ones to be killed by the wrist blades as they were each alone in terms of combatants to contend with. Mac, Poncho, and Blaine were all nearby other members of Dutch’s team when killed by plasma caster. As bad ass as they are, Yautjas know when they are potentially outmatched and may be injured or killed during a hunt.

One of the greatest scenes of the movie. How The Predator has assessed Dutch's capability in surviving the gauntlet for as long as he has and bestows upon him, almost a privilege in allowing him the chance to fight unarmed, as opposed to slaughtering him like his teammates, with the reward for the Predator being Dutch's big noggin for his trophy collection. But right from the start, it's made absolutely clear that The Predator is a special hunter, a truly terrifying foe. How he instantly gets the jump on a trained killer like Dutch by revealing himself with his blades either side of Dutch's neck, and goes on to easily lift and hold Dutch a foot above the ground to look him in the eye. Fantastic.

In the movie Hawkins had his weapon out, but didn't have it up and wasn't scanning the environment for threats, so The predator didn't use his plasma caster. Instead he made noise until both Anna and Hawkins noticed, and then moved in on foot and killed Hawkins by hand. Blain had his weapon out and was not only actively scanning the environment , but actively firing into it. Shooting him from cover was therefore acceptable. Mac had figured out how to spot the predator even while cloaked, so there was no reason to turn the cloak off. He was so actively tracking the Predator, so it was fine for the Predator to shoot him, but only after using Mac's own action against him, letting him put himself in position to be shot. Dillon had his weapon out and was actively scanning his environment for the Predator, so it was also acceptable to shoot him, except the shot didn't connect solidly, and disarmed him. The Predator could have fired a second shot to finish him off at this point but didn't, he switched tactics and began to close the distance on foot, even slowing down to walk in order to give Dillon enough time to un-sling his second weapon and aim it at the Predator before it made the kill. We don't see Billy's death, so we can't say for certain how he died, though the last time we see him alive is through the Predator's point of view as he closes the distance on foot. Given his behavior elsewhere, and judging by the state of Billy's corpse later, is probably safe to say he was killed in hand-to-hand combat. Poncho was wounded, true enough, but he did have his weapons drawn and ready, and he was looking for the Predator, so it was still acceptable to circle around out of his line of fire and take him out by shooting him. Anna was unarmed and posed no threat so he couldn't kill her. Dutch was firing at the Predator the first time, so it was acceptable to shoot him, but he got away. During their second fight, as long as Dutch was using explosives and projectile weapons against the Predator it was fine for the P4edator to attempt to shoot him. However, once the Predator caught him, it became obvious Dutch was disarmed, and his breathing was distressed. The Predator therefore discarded this plasma caster and breathing mask, so he would have to fight Dutch disarmed and unable to breathe comfortably.... or in other words, on as even terms as possible. "But what about his blades" you might be thinking . "He pulled those out at the end of the fight" Yes, he did, but only after Dutch had been thoroughly defeated that he was literally crawling away from the Predator, dragging his legs behind him. As far as the Predator knew, he had crippled his opponent, which meant it was time to dispatch his prey in the most humane way possible.

Yeah I always took it as the predator was seeing if dutch had mandibles like a fellow predator/Yautja, particularly when he turns his head to look at his skull's side profile. He could have believed that he was being stalked and hunted by another of his species. Dutch had completely reversed the role of hunter and prey and was utilizing some predator techniques where the predator doesn't ever see his heat signature and the explosions could be misinterpreted as plasma caster shots possibly in the heat of the moment. When he found he found Dutch to be a mere human, he showed him honor and respect as a warrior and not as prey for his skill and courage even though he was physically and technologically weaker. Hence the removal of his mask and the fight to the death. Makes you wonder how Billy went out.

As iconic and memorable as the T-800 is, Dutch is easily the best character Arnie ever played. He isn’t just charismatic and badass, he is also extremely intelligent, very vulnerable and most impressively, he grows as a character. Dutch knows strength and skill won’t beat the Predator. He needs to outsmart it. He gathers as much intel on his opponent as possible, deducing a lot of information on pure observation alone, and then uses the clever tactics to defeat the creature based on that intel. Even then, he isn’t perfect. Most of Dutch’s strategies fail due the Predator’s own intelligence and ingenuity, which helps illustrate how much of a genuine threat it is, and such mistakes result in serious consequences, namely the death of his teammates. However, he learns. With each defeat and each setback, Dutch gathers more intel. He learns from his mistakes. Even when he loses all his teammates and most of his supplies and weapons, he makes one last attempt to defeat the Predator. Not just because it is his only means of salvation, but because he finally knows what to do, he finally knows how to beat it. He takes what little resources he has and creates a battle plan that leaves no stone unturned. He’s so confident, in fact, he actually invites the Predator to battle with a loud war cry. The final battle commences and after a long, brutal struggle, Dutch ultimately, and deservedly, emerges victorious. Arnie will forever be remembered as the T-800, but there’s no denying Dutch was his best role. He isn’t just a super cool, unstoppable killing machine, he’s a skilled strategist with relatable weaknesses which he gradually learns to overcome. There's a reason the Predator only took off his mask in front of him and no else. He was truly the best the squad had to offer.

Perfect description. Dutch’s biggest tool was his super high intelligence as we saw throughout the movie. His deductions and adaptability to each situation were exceptional. This element added so much depth to the character and Arnold really killled it with his acting. Dutch Schaeffer is definitely one of the top protagonists of any movie displaying the best of human characteristics. A joy to watch.

It’s important to note at this point, Dutch has no weapons on his being. The Yautja not only looked him over to see if he had any sort of armor on him, since Dutch had put up more of a fight than this Yautja had ever encountered on earth, he also was accessing how to go forward. The only way he’d be able to fight and claim his trophy (Dutch’s skull) would be hand to hand combat as per the Yautja code, Dutch is technically not a threat without a weapon and the Yautja would have to abandon the pursuit (everyone else he killed had some sort of weapon on them when he made the kill, even poncho was holding a gun when he was shot from behind), but this Predator knows very well at this point that Dutch is a formidable opponent and threat. And he wanted that trophy so much he was willing to even the odds to get around the code.

Something that always bothered me was how this is supposedly an honorable sportsman who values the thrill of the hunt above all else and yet when hunting they choose to use cloaking technology, thermal vision, and plasma cannons. Any one of the operatives the predator killed could have been 100x more skilled than Dutch and it wouldn't have mattered because the predator killed them in the most unfair manner possible.

Gotta love the predator they maybe vicious killers but they have honor and respect and only hunt armed prey unlike most killers that just go after weak helpless people. But not the predator they live for a challenge and desire it. I'm not familiar with there lore but the first film will always be the best no matter what.
