Testing out the Predator PDL kayak on the ocean and trying out how mobile and stable the kayak really is. Afterwards find the right techniques to flip the kayak over.

Really good information. One thought. I noticed you weren't wearing a personal floatation device (PFD). Wearing a vest type float can make it a little easier to get back in the kayak because the vest holds you are held a little higher in the water when you are starting to climb back into the kayak. I may be the only person in Hawaii who wears a PFD. I almost drowned when my catamaran capsized and in the process of getting it upright in waves, I got too worn out to tread water effectively. One near-death experience like that will convince you to wear some type of PFD, especially when out solo on the ocean. I watched your video on how to be safe when fishing off of cliffs. You are very safety conscious. My 2 cents.

Thanks Jeff your quite observant, have to admit with all the excitement I left it at home and was very disappointed because I wanted to try it out. I got the gas operated one and wanted to see how well it works but hey can save it for another video. But 100 percent agree always wear your vest. I'll take your advice to heart and wear it always . Thank you Jeff I really appreciate your valuable 2 cents.

Great video. I see some negative comment's about not being in deeper water for the flip. Actually good for ANYONE who have a kayak for the first time to try. That way you can recover "Safely" and get use to it before heading out in to deeper water. Mahalo.......

My friend while I very much appreciated the idea of showing us how you would deal with the situation if the yak flips but since you are in water where you can stand then all the tests do not really compare to the real thing which is when you are in water over your head I would love it if you made another vid, in water which is over your head, that would be the real deal, the real test thsnk you

After spending many years flipping small racing sailboats, turning turtle all the way over, the dagger board was a great way to right the boat back over. Your right about the prop being a great leverage point. I am picking up a Predator PDL and looking forward to both fresh and salt water. Thank you for the video and stay safe out there!

got to test it in deeper water where you can`t touch the floor and with a vest on and all gear loaded,poles and everything,see what you loose when you flip over , that will completely give you a different scenario where cold water and fatigue will beat the hell out of you since you loose your floor leverage and reach, just swimming around will tire you while all the gear is also either loose or tangle around you ,in choppy water?...some people even carry anchors that will fall over too and weight the kayak to one side...too many variables !... just my 2 cents after seeing people flip by accident and any kayak is easy to flip when they are empty!

Thanks for taking the trouble, very informative and useful test. It would be good to have seen a bit more where you're in deeper water and have zero purchase off the bottom, that's what most of us would want to know, how hard it would be to get back onboard or un-flip this model in deep water. Obviously wave action would make a big difference to flipping and retrieving, but this give us a good indication. The prop is great for leverage and a strong paddle tag line is a good idea. I am seriously thinking of getting this model so thanks again for the test.

The cooler may have kept it from turning over fully, but if it had ice and other things inside and in deeper waters, that would make it REALLY difficult to flip it back.

How do you have that cooler set up on there. I have a PDL as well and I have a much smaller cooler and can't fit the scupper cart? That's a nice little set up you've got in the back and I'd like something like that as the fish I target won't fit in the cooler I have now. Thanks.
@islandhooking1936
@islandhooking1936 7 жыл бұрын
I actually had to build a platform that would be even with the storage area that's behind the seat to allow a longer cooler to fit. By raising the platform about 6 inches or so I was able to fit a wider cooler because the top of the kayak is wider than the bottom area. I made it out of wood and painted it so the water wouldn't be absorbed in the wood.

Did you launch the pali on Monday? And any reason why you went with a hard cooler instead of an insulated fish bag?
@islandhooking1936
@islandhooking1936 7 жыл бұрын
Good question and yes I did launch at the pali hope I didn't embarrassed myself lol. I checked out the fish bag for the front of the kayak but realized the bag was pretty small. You could probably fit two good size fish in the bag but not much room. Also I didn't want to climb over the paddle drive to put the fish in especially if its rough. The cooler allows me to reach in the back and grab my drinks and its easier to put the fish in and can hold lots more fish than the bag. I also like the idea I can mount things on the cooler and it makes a great floatation bonus if the kayak flips over. I made it so I could also jettison the cooler if I had to. But I did think about making a lighter option and remove the cooler and put a small cooler or basket with the rod holders on the back and use the fish bag in the front. Great thing about the Predator has lots of room so it gives me the option to try different things. Don't be surprised in the near future you'll see different versions of my kayak set up. The cooler is my heavy duty set up when I'm optimistic I'll catch lots of fish or something really huge lol. Great thing you can design it and keep experimenting as you go, cant guaranty I'll leave the big cooler on.

I don't think thats a very good idea submerging the top end of the drive like that. From what I understand the top end is water resist not water proof You might ought to clean and grease
@islandhooking1936
@islandhooking1936 7 жыл бұрын
yes totally agree but wanted to show a realistic video. I was figuring in the ocean with waves eventually the kayak will flip over eventually so I wanted to make sure if it did I could flip the kayak over without a problem. So far the drive is working great but I agree have to oil it and grease it up. My next adventure learning how to take it apart and servicing it. I wouldn't recommend submerging the PDL under water but did it for everyone to see so they wouldn't have to. Hope things go well with the drive but time will tell. I'll be a good test to see how well the drive is made crossing fingers.

@islandhooking1936
@islandhooking1936 7 жыл бұрын
Its actually a cooler that I sprayed with plasti Dip. But of course still testing things out making more adjustments see what works and see what doesn't. Must say though the only thing I like about the cooler is that if you flip over its easy to flip the kayak because the cooler prevents the kayak from flipping over completely. On my trident 11 I have a small cooler on it and when I flipped the kayak in deep water with swells the cooler stopped the kayak from completely rolling over. So I know it works and trust me it made a difference especially if your in deep water and strong currents with big swells. Lakes and ponds no problem you wouldn't need it.

One : always wear a PFD ! Two : proper entry is belly in first , butt in chair and legs last ! Three ; prop leverage ok but boat may hit u in head and knock u out Proper technique is to reach under kayak to side handle and push kayak away from u with other hand Making a video and not mention a PFD is absolutely against cost guard mandates

Am I the only one thinking that a black painted Marine style cooler is an awful idea for being out in the sun?
@islandhooking1936
@islandhooking1936 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Josuha, probably not but it was the only color that would match with the kayak. Red and white popped but the cooler was all you could see and it looked off. Also the cooler is big so I didn't want it to stand out as much. Black kinda keeps the cooler invisible so I went with that color. It balance out the color and keeps the color flowing from the back to the front without something hurting your eyes. But as always work in progress, still thinking of making some new changes on the kayak so we'll see cooler might just go.
