Good to know I’m not alone in feeling underwhelmed by books this year. (I half-blame the delay of A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping, which was my most anticipated!) I voted for The Tainted Cup in Fantasy. A well done mystery in an interesting fantasy world with a tiny romantic subplot. As Mara said, it could work as a standalone, but I’m interested in seeing more. But The Warm Hands of Ghosts is one that’ll stay with me.

I was surprised at the number of categories I had never heard of any of the nominees.

11:43 "A Promise of Pi-ri-ot!" 🤣 The selection for Sci-Fi made me so angry that I've now got a list of over 110 Sci-Fi books that came out this year and I am going to read them all because I refuse to believe those are the top 20 for the year. I refuse to believe Lit-Sci-Fi is better than hard/space opera/genre sci-fi. I think Horror had the best releases for 2024.

Excellent vid :) Feeling a tad let down by the noms this year. Loving the diversity throughout the catergories but Scifi and Fantasy both seem very random, compared to usual.

I picked totally different votes than you, but honestly agree so much with so many of your predictions. Realistically it's always won by the biggest name in a category, but it's still fun to vote for things, ehehe. I can't believe how few votes there were for Romantasy, Fantasy and Sci-fi over other categories!

The cover of Diavola caught my eye on the library months ago and I kept going back to it, so I just picked it up. It ended up being a kinda creepy ghost story with family drama, but it was also a bit campy. I really enjoyed it! Would recommend if any of that is something you like in a book.

The Women was one of my few 5 star reads this year! It has stuck with me for months.. worth the read!

I feel so out of the loop. I only knew one or two books in every category! 😂 I knew three in historical fiction. But I basically have read nothing new this year. Definitely agree with your first two picks. Those are the genres I know the most and Rooney and Hannah are the authors I hear about the most! Ooop - edit. Definitely agree on Emily Henry and SJM. Boring but will always win. 😑

Also, this the 1st year, I dont know 90% of the books in my prefered categories AND the 1st year, I dont feel any FOMO from my ignorance. Are we recycling the same recipes for success?! 🤔

I voted for Heir for the YA Fantasy, because it was the only one I read, but I also liked it.

Sharon McMahon is going to win the history category. She's a wildly popular Instagram creator so she has a very online, very motivated fan base.

I have heard a lot about the Bright Sword. I'm a little less than half way through it. It could be a contender

Question for the group here- in what ways or from what outlets do you stay up on new releases?

I've been convinced to pick up We Used To Live Here (in the Horror category)! And I voted for the Dead Cat Tail Assassins for fantasy. I don't think it's going to win, but it was certainly better than the other books I read in that category.

I read What the River Knows on your recommendation, Jess, and loved it. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series, and I will be voting for it.😉

the number of ratings for the Kristin Hannah book is UNREAL. While people do love Emily Henry, Abby Jimenez has really grown in popularity especially with her last three releases. so i feel romance is essentially down to Ali, Emily and Abby. Probably Emily Henry will take it but they are her competition.

As someone, who mostly read mystery/thrillers this year, EYE would be surprised if Freida McFadden wins as her books are great in the moment/a fun ride but they dont hold up after I'm done reading them.

i think 'the tainted cup' will win fantasy! (and i hope it does too!) it was /everywhere/ earlier this year and i genuinely haven't seen a single negative review about it! it wasn't going to be one that i picked up myself, but it came in a book sub so i gave it a shot and i'm so glad i did bc it's genuinely one of my favourite reads this year! on the flip side of that, i tried reading 'where the library hides' the other day and it was so bad! i had to dnf, i was so disappointed! overall though, the picks for goodreads were super weak this year. a lot of the choices available were extremely underwhelming, to the point where i'm like 'did the publisher pay to get this on the list?' 😂😂

Of course you can borrow Kristin Hannah right now, the rest of the world has apparently already read it 😂
@danielleoliver1734Ай бұрын
I’m guessing first lie wins for thriller and hoping the at the Freida votes are split. I’m holding out hope that SJM doesn’t win romantasy and the buzz of Quicksilver gets it a win, or anything really, I’m sick of the same people winning every year. I don’t want the Familiar to win fantasy, it was painfully meh. Hoping book of doors, Emily Wilde or somewhere beyond the sea wins. YA fantasy is a competition of 3 - ruthless vows, Reckless and Crimson Moth That’s all the categories I care about
