I hate when people think of Kovačić as “just a squad player”. He’s world class, but isn’t recognized despite being excellent at retaining the ball and rarely losing possession. Pep is clearly fond of him, only not using him because of Rodri, but had used the two in a double pivot. He isn’t just some side passing merchant, his dribbling goes under the radar with him knowing when to pass and when to dribble. He shows up in big games, but without scoring often people don’t see that (however often his goals are bangers, clutch or both). His versatility is excellent, with him being able to play not only many positions, but roles. In City’s two biggest games so far vs Chelsea he was in my opinion MOTM, and against Arsenal was a positive in a City team that was questionable against a ten man Arsenal. He also was largely responsible for the last-minute equalizer. And he did great in the UCL but people only remember him for the pen vs Madrid that he missed.
