In this video I explore the world of rice cookers and traditional cooking methods! I am reviewing a range of rice cookers, from affordable options to high-end models. But that's not all! I also share with you a precious family recipe passed down through generations - the traditional way of cooking rice in China, straight from my grandma's kitchen.
I challenge my circus and my husband with a blind taste test. Will the expensive rice cooker prevail, or will the humble, time-tested technique win our hearts?
And there's a surprise guest appearance by our adorable new puppy! Watch as our furry friend curiously explores the world of rice, even getting a chance to savor the delectable grains.
Li Mi Fan 沥米饭 Recipe - Traditional Chinese Rice Cooking
Ingredients:
500g rice
2000ml water
Instructions:
1.Wash the rice: Place the rice in a large bowl and add water. Swirl the rice gently with your hand, then pour out the cloudy water. Repeat this process at least three times until the water becomes clearer. This helps to remove any excess starch and impurities from the rice.
2.Boil the water: In a wok or a large pot, add the 2000ml of water and bring it to a boil over high heat.
3.Add the rice: Once the water is boiling, carefully add the washed rice to the pot. Stir the rice a few times to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking. Allow the rice to cook for about 8-10 minutes, or until it is about half cooked. The grains should still have a slightly firm texture.
4.Drain the rice: Set a colander or sieve over a large bowl or pot. Gently pour the half-cooked rice into the colander, allowing the water to drain away. You can save this rice water (also known as rice soup) for drinking or use it as a base for cooking other dishes.
5.Steam the rice: Transfer the drained rice into a steamer, spreading it evenly to ensure proper steaming. Place the steamer over high heat and cover it with a lid. Steam the rice for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the grains are fully cooked and fluffy.
6.Serve and enjoy: Once the rice is done steaming, remove it from the steamer and fluff it gently with chopsticks. Your traditional Li Mi Fan is now ready to be enjoyed! Serve it alongside your favorite dishes or as a staple accompaniment to various Chinese meals.
Note: Remember to adjust the cooking time based on the type of rice you are using and personal preference. Some varieties may require slightly more or less time to cook fully. Experimentation will help you achieve the perfect texture that suits your taste.
Traditional Chinese rice cooking, like this Li Mi Fan recipe, offers a distinct and authentic way to prepare rice. The combination of boiling and steaming helps achieve a fluffy, tender texture while preserving the natural flavors of the rice. Give it a try and experience the delight of traditional Chinese cuisine in your own kitchen!

I love the traditional way of cooking rice! I was taught to steam the rice and remove it into a big bowl. Cover the rice with hot water and let the rice soak the water. Once it looks plump (more like, when the water have been soaked), strain it out and then steam it. It always, always tastes the best!! The only problem is it takes too much time to make it 😂.

I'm definitely going to try the traditional method from grandma! 😊 The results for that one sounds like something I wish I could learn more about, because my family no longer has those kinds of pots, so I feel that I missed out on something nice.

haha, you are adorable. I love your sense of humor. I am very happy that your grandma's rice was chosen as best by husband and step-daughter. that's awesome. I have a $20 aroma that my ex-GF gave me, she is Chinese (Fuzhou) and I had always tried to cook rice on the stove, or use instant rice etc. I never realized how much better properly rinsed and cooked rice is. I can never go back to old method of rice cooking. I mostly use a Japanese rice Nishiki that I pick up at the local Asian market, along with other spices and sauces and dumplings, etc. I don't think you need a very fancy rice cooker to make really good rice. So I think that $500 model is a waste. Thank you for this video, I loved it. your family is so lucky to have you. Your English is amazing, your cooking always seems so good and your sense of humor is awesome.

This is really interesting as my rice cooker by YumAsia has a setting called Yumcarb that cooks the rice in a basket where it boils it first and then steams it which is just like your Grandma's way. It's supposed to cook the starch and sugars out of the rice. We always get amazing tasting rice and it was only £99.99! Would be awesome to hear your opinion on it! 😊

Great video! I love that your dog made an appearance! What a cute little pup!!! Quick question for you. We make sushi at home once a week and always steam the rice in a covered pan on the stove. Do you think one of the cheaper rice cookers would work well for that? We love the consistency of the rice when it is cooked on the stove top but a rice cooker seems way easier! Not sure we want to get an expensive one since we don't cook rice on a daily basis and the stove top works, its just kind of a hassle.

I think the electric rice cooker depends on rice too. Japanese brands should probably do very well with Japanese rice which is more sticky than Chinese rice. However, Chinese brands or SEA brands should do well in Chinese and SEA rice. And Indian brand should do well with Indian rice. There are varieties of rice and each culture specifically eat one of them. However in Thailand, we have mainly 2 types of rice: the typical rice and sticky rice. Normal rice cooker can do typical rice very good but not with sticky rice. Only some specially and expensive designs can do sticky rice too, but it’s still not perfect. Nowadays, we also have Japanese rice becoming more popular, not all rice cooking in Thailand can do it good though.

I bought a Japan made rice cooker this Spring after getting the lowest price from a store outside Toronto, ON. I first cooked the rice from Korea in this cooker. It tasted great following the instructions on the rice package. Next, I cooked rice from Hokkaido, Japan as it was a bag I could carry at 5 kg. It was also great for Japanese cuisine. The Korean rice tasted nicer to me. I also followed the instructions for cooking the rice on the package. Both Korean and Japanese rice requires soaking. The length of time to soak depends on the season, rice variety and when it was harvested. I cook it the night before and keep in the fridge to convert to resistant starch. That's how it lessens carbohydrates. The rice cooker also has settings for sushi rice and others. It's important to fluff the rice after it's finished cooking. The last 10 or 13 minutes of cooking is the steaming part of the program. The machine and the type and kind of rice determines the outcome you will get when following instructions. I think the induction heating did make a difference in how the rice turned out evenly cooked and tasty. I like to reheat it in my cast iron pan with butter for a decadent touch. I don't have a microwave anymore since getting rid of it.

Grandma worked the best because there's no guessing/inaccuracy with how much water to use. The expensive rice cooker worked second best because you're familiar with it and it's water/rice ratio. Too much water is almost always the reason riice gomes our poorly in a rice cooker. I wash my rice in a mesh strainer so i can most accurately measure the amount of water.

I went through 3 cheap ones. I ended up with a Cosori Rice cooker, it's definitely on par with Cuckoo from Korea, and Zojirushi. A great rice cooker is an investment. It's cheaper to buy a good quality expensive rice cooker than replacing cheap ones all the time. We only live once, and life is too short to waste on tasteless food with horrible texture.

You know not many westerner or Asian wife's can cook rice nice and cook it fluffy they can cook it but they can't get it nice and fluffy, I don't know they can't grasp the absorption method, in any way of cooking it. So I salute all the women who can cook quality rice, watch some one who cooks it properly then mimic there exact recipe until you get it. Right, nice and fluffy.

I thought #2 was grandma's rice & #4 was Aroma's rice? We use Aroma's rice cooker, but sometimes we use "kaldero" (Philippines' pot) to cook rice. Rice cooked from the pot always tasted better, but you'll have to keep an eye or it rice would burn. The burnt rice (scorched rice) taste good with dried fish or soup.

The best rice method is Grandma 's rice. You want to know why? I lost 20 kg in a year just eating rice cooked that way in China. The rice water is the resistant starch and getting rid of it means you can eat rice without putting on weight. Rice cookers are the worst. Makes you fat. So try cooking rice the old traditional way. If you are lazy, then buy a Grayn's rice cooker. It gets rid of that starch water easily but that rice cooker is really expensive. Best you cook the traditional way. A lot ..... a lot cheaper.

I am a good cook. There are only two things I cannot make. Rice and pancakes. No matter what I do and how many different ways I try... I cannot make rice. And I have also tried every version of rice. They all taste the same to me. I cannot taste the difference between varieties. Thank goodness I only make it once in a while. Its not worth the headache. In my house its a version of potatoes or nothing. In the past I had a Cuban boyfriend. He wanted rice every night. What? Every night. No way. I told him if he wanted it he had to cook it. I was not going to eat the same thing every night let alone go through the torture of trying to cook it successfully. In the end he had his Mom make a weeks worth at a time and kept it in my fridge. His mom tried to teach me. I don't know what it is but I never got the rice gene. 🤣
