Pretty rough release technique there buddy . I know there tough fish but really

Are you referring to the fish that bumped the side of the boat or all the small fish tossed back head first? Because the fish that hit the boat was obviously an accident. Not a practiced technique. If you are referring to the other fish I toss back head first, fish in general can jump nearly that high. As well as it helps rush water through their gills to giving them a burst. I feel that’s a slight toss is better than dropping them on backwards which can disorient them as well. Any fish over ten pounds I do attempt to release as easy as possible, however I cant see a 2-3 foot head first toss being considered rough.
