I love everything that the OSUMB does for their pregame (it truly never gets old) but my absolute favorite thing that they do is right after they finish marching down the field while performing "Buckeye Battle Cry," they turn around and also play the opposing school's fight song (and make their logo on the field). Call it whatever you want to, but I think it's the band's way of saying, "hey opposing team's marching band, we hate your football team and we're gonna kick your butt today, but we recognize YOU our fellow musicians, so here's a little shout-out!" IDK, that's what I always thought it meant. Either way, it's classy as hell and I commend the OSUMB for doing that for every visiting school. They're not only the best damn band in the land, they also seem to be one of the most respectful 🙂 You stay classy Ohio State 👍😎

Could someone explain to me the reason for the back bend at the start and the high/kick stepping? Is there some tradition behind it? From a country that has no tradition of marching bands, find this fascinating.
@spade29385 жыл бұрын
Both are tradition, the drum major does the strut as a display of athleticism and to catch eyes. The backbend is meant to be an omen of good luck if the plume on top of his/her hat touches the ground. If it doesn't, it's bad luck.
@ohmegroin5 жыл бұрын
@@spade2938 Thanks for that. As i said i come from a place that has no tradition of marching bands.
@Willybush3 жыл бұрын
This pregame show has remained relatively unchanged since the 30s. The ramp entrance at the beginning may be even older. But this band prides itself on tradition for sure. There’s too many to count in this band. The entire gameday itself is pretty much one big tradition lol
@Hollylivengood3 жыл бұрын
He makes an O, was the begining of the thing. And the strut is just a strut. It used to be the Ohio State drum major was a really jymnastic performer, and he did a lot of backflips and high stepping throughout. He still is, just not as much.

I have 2 questions (I'm not from the US, but from Belgium) : 1) The one in red (last out of the tunnel), is he only drum major or is he also the band's mascot? Because in some videos the crowd starts cheering when he comes out 2) Why is there a line of people in the same outfit as the band in the top right corner (next to the field, completely visible at 3:07) PS: I wish that someday I can visit Ohio to see you guys live :)

Maxim Van Loocke 1) that’s the drum major, but he is very talented so people love him and cheer when they see him. the uniforms are iconic and people recognize it anywhere 2) those are also members of the band, but they’re alternates for that given week. there are 228 official members of the band but only 195 members march pregame

Having played in the MSU Spartan band, underclassmen that have never seen a particular Big Ten band in person want to see the band. Its doesn't matter what band it is, they want to see them in person. Big Ten Schools don't travel much. Additionally, IMO Ohio State's traditional pregame show is what they are good at. The more modern years halftime stuff is just OK to me but it gets them crowd appeal and social media likes and that is great for any band, it's what you want. However, the rivalry between the Michigan Schools and OSU is real. There was a not too nice exchange back in the 80's between OSU and MSU. However, the bands are coming together today and playing halftime shows together and such. Here is MSU and OSU playing together kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJ-mhoJnq52Df7c Anyway, there are several good band's in the Big Ten. I have to side with my MSU Spartan who's drumline is one of the best if not the best in the Big Ten and is respected around the Country. Several college band's have things that they are great at and some are just great all around. Much respect to the kids that do this. It's a heavy dedication.

Also, just out of curiosity, what the hell is the thing standing on the 35 yard line at 3:15, toward the bottom? At first it looks like one of the other guys running around, but it stands completely still until they form the "M". Then it seems to FLOAT through the band members as they start moving toward the opposite end of the field - you don't see any legs moving and it looks like it passes through some of the band members' bodies. It exits out on from the left and floats across the field in a wispy, glitch-like manner and goes to the upper left corner of the screen, onto the side line, and through the people standing there. What the hell is this?? 😯😯😯

I was a there from 1971-1977 - grad student in music and theater and an OSU staffer. Fall of 1971, brand new to the stadium, the first football game of the season, and I got there late [because everything closes down on "football Saturdays," doncha know!] Had to wait at what was then open bleacher section at the south end of the stadium. I was stuck, I couldn't move, had missed the pregame show [who knew?], heard the band playing the Star Spangled Banner. Saw the biggest American flag I could IMAGINE, and then, this huge noise... "and the crowd went wild". Damned if it wasn't the BLUE ANGELS [!!] flying over in formation. Who DOES that?? This was the introduction to what I would come to know as 86 thousand screaming Buckeyes, because the announcer would always declare this. And the attendance record would be broken every football Saturday, remarkably, for 6 years... btw: I was a early feminist who found no allies in the Music Department, except for the women instrumentalists who couldn't play in TBDBITL until 1975, because...
