The Radiology Coach reviews the aspects of receiving x-rays when a patient is pregnant. Some pregnant women have a great deal of anxiety at the though of this prospect. This video may help to settle some of those fears.

My wife is in the 6th month of her pregnancy. During a hospital visit, they did all checkups on her. They didn't know that she was pregnant and performed an Chest X-ray on her. Later when they found out she was pregnant, they all got worried. Please tell me is there anything to worry about. She didn't have any health condition still the x-ray was performed accidentally. Please guide. Edit: I was blessed with a baby girl today on 18 Oct 2022. Everything is absolutely fine. No need to worry.

During my annual medical checkup.I am not aware that I was pregnant 6weeks and 6 days pregnant and performed a Chest X-ray though I know I am delayed with my menstruation which is I am irregular always for almost 13 yrs. .It is common to me that I'm delayed because I have endemetriosis /adenomyosis condition. Is there anything I need to worried because after the medical I used to went on my ob-gyne to make sure if I'm really pregnant.then it is positive.I know X-ray is not good specially during formative stage of the baby...please help me to know

Hi Greg, My wife is in her first trimester and we have been taking all the necessary precautions. However, because of an incorrect prescription given by the doctor we took a Chest X-Ray PA. Later on, the doctor admitted her mistake and told us about the threatening results of the X-ray. We are really scared and concerned about the effects of this on the unborn baby. I had chest X rays in my second trimester of pregnancy and they didn’t shield me!!! That was very annoying because I asked 3 times and I was basically ignored by the technician. 😔 the nurse that was transporting me whiteness everything and she reported him.

@@naziaarshad9823 No. She is 2 months old now and very healthy but that was a scary moment because I wasn’t expecting X-ray and I was uneducated about side effects. My midwife explained that you have to be exposed several times without protection for the fetus to be affected but that doesn’t excuse the malpractice of the technician. They’re supposed to cover you!!!

Priyanka, thank you for your question. Having an x-ray of your pelvis, if it is absolutely necessary, is not detrimental to you and your baby. Simply make sure that the technologist knows that you are pregnant. While you don’t want to have multiple x-ray exams in a short period, a single examination (with 1-3 images or so) isn’t enough to create problems.

I’m in my first trimester of pregnancy and got 2 dental x rays done and wasn’t covered. I don’t know how much radiation was use on me during the x ray . Ebony, sorry for the very late reply. Dental x-rays require very minimal radiation doses. I would not worry about it.

A lot of people say the radiation is really low it still bother me when I think about it because when I wasn’t pregnant I was getting covered and when I mentioned it I didn’t get cover . Everything going to be fine trust me I stressed myself out like crazy when I found out it wasn’t worth the stress .

Arosha, do not fear. Although it is advisable to avoid x-rays in the first trimester, it doesn’t mean that exposure will cause damage. As mentioned in my video, HIGH exposure doses at close intervals can warrant concern. But even then, it usually indicates simply limiting the patient exposure moving forward. Back x-rays are not excessive radiation doses and this type of thing happens all the time, without harming the babies. Best.

Dear Rashidat. It is easy to stumble into a fearful situation and overthink your x-ray circumstance. It is almost certain that the chest x-ray did not cause problems with your child, especially since the x-rays were not directed towards your abdomen. I do not wish to minimize your concerns, but be comforted that with your pregnancy comes a variety of new sensations and discomfort. Best.

This video is irresponsible - there is no limit on the number of x-rays a pregnant patient can have. The decision of whether or not to do an x-ray on any patient should only be based on the potential risks from the radiation and the benefits from having the imaging done. Also, most professional radiology groups now recommend NOT to use a lead shield when imaging a pregnant patient. It can get in the way of what the doctor needs to see, and in some cases (especially CT scans) it can increase the radiation dose to the patient and the fetus. If you have any questions about the effects of x-rays on your fetus when you are pregnant, please ask to speak to the Radiation Safety Officer or Medical Physicist where you had your x-rays done. They will be able to give you correct information about this.

Paulyn, thank you for your question. If you were holding your child, you were only getting scatter from the x-rays. Although it is desirable to stay away from x-rays during this time, the dose that you received was very low. Scatter radiation is somewhat skin-deep and does not penetrate nearly as much as direct x-rays. Rest easy. Your situation doesn’t appear to be threatening to your child.

Thank you for your inquiry, Sabina. First, I am not a doctor. I am a registered radiologic technologist. I have taught radiation safety for 30 years. That being said, the most volatile period to get exposed with x-rays is the first trimester. After that, it is regarded as acceptable to administer x-rays as necessary. For a chest x-ray, your abdomen will be shielded, so the baby only receives scatter radiation. If it is necessary for your condition, I would get it. If you are getting an x-ray as a precaution, you might wait until after the birth. Hope that helps.

Amina, thank you for your question. The x-ray doses that you receive from chest x-rays are very low. If this indeed was a normal chest x-ray, you should have no concerns. These levels of radiation are not known to cause damage or death in the fetus, even at two weeks.

Swagatika, please don’t fret. Your child received about the same radiation as you might with foot x-rays. X-rays are like a paper cut. Your tissues heal within a couple of weeks. This is not a sentinel event and there shouldn’t be any danger for your child’s future. I realize his genitals were exposed, but again, the dose is very low and this type of exam is common in many settings. Hope that helps. GT

Balaji, thank you for your comments. I understand your concerns, however, her abdomen was not directly radiated. Secondly, exposure levels associated with chest x-rays are not regarded as serious. Honestly, most specialist would agree that you have nothing to worry about.

Maham, thank you for your question. Your abdomen was not directly exposed, as your chest region was the focus. Additionally, you had a significantly lower dose than is required if you were getting an abdomen x-ray. I wouldn’t be concerned if I were you.

Sorry to hear about your anxiety. A foot x-ray yields extremely low exposure levels. Do not worry. Your abdomen did not receive dangerous radiation levels. You should be fine.
