Indeed! Considering it’s called “Prehistoric planet” and not something Dino related I hope this means potential future seasons may explore some of the lesser known but equally interesting periods, like the an maybe something in the Eocene Danian period, let’s see the aftermath of the meteor and how life tried to handle it! Or give us a proper 45 minutes of cambrian life showing the diverse nature of it, or the triassic, so many oppertunities and I hope they just dig into it!

If a season 3 were to be made, would like two things: 1. Have it set in the Jurassic period. 2. Have the themes be centered on weather and climate. For what episodes I want to be made surrounding these themes, they are; 1-Fire 2-Blizzards 3-Thunderstorms 4-Drought 5-Volcanoes

Your comment about the final hunt scene made me realise that Every. Single. Theropod. Hunting scene in Prehistoric Planet follows the same 2 strike formula: Unsuccessful hunt ‘Immediately’ followed by a successful hunt.
@LucasCaminha
@LucasCaminha 7 ай бұрын
I mean... Not really. The T.rex hunt, both of the Velociraptor hunts (with the second also counting as a Tarbosaurus hunt), the Dromaeosaurus causing a stampede, the Rajasaurus picking off baby Isisaurus, the Imperobator chasing Morrosaurus, the Pectinodon hunting "Styginetta" and the Majungasaurus going for Simosuchus, just off the top of my head, are not like that. A lot of these are basically instant success, the Rajasaurus one is just a buffet, and the Imperobator and Majungasaurus ones end in failure and leave it at that. The only hunts following the formula you mentioned that I can remember concern the Qianzhousaurus and Nanuqsaurus, and even then the earlier Nanuq hunt also evades that script in that it's basically a stalemate that turns into a kill.

The Mosasaurus hoffmani cleaning scene does a great job at tricking the audience into thinking the animal is on the hunt, when, in actually, it's partaking in something more mundane. It's a bait-and-switch on par with the Eustreptospondylus fake out in Walking with Dinosaurs (1999).

@LucasCaminha
@LucasCaminha 7 ай бұрын
@@william3100 how can that specific scene be overdone if it's in the first episode? That is a weird complaint. Plus every now and then it makes the rounds on social media, so I wouldn't call it not memorable if a lot of people are sharing it. As for the "boring" bit... Sorry animals don't always act like action movie characters, I guess? Would you see a scene like that with a sea turtle and call it boring?
@william3100
@william3100 7 ай бұрын
@LucasCaminha it's overdone because other pieces of paleomedia have done it, and it the bait and switch becomes overdone in the show itself later. Pretty much everything makes rounds on social media. Especially with a show as overhyped as Prehistoric Planet. It's only remembered by some people because Prehistoric Planet tried to be realistic(even though plenty of media has done so before)and isn't any major action(even though that isn't bad either as long as there is a reason for it). It's also boring because something about the presentation of it doesn't have a recognizable feel to it. It's not because of no fight or action of any kind. It's because something about the scene doesn't have the proper writing to leave something substantial, like what the Walking With series and many paleo docs before had. This is a problem I have with the entirety of Prehistoric Planet, but I don't feel like going into that long talk. This comment is already too long as it is.

Man! I've been looking for a video or a post that summarizes the whole series locations and time periods of the animals shown in the show, because I'm trying to make a "Walking With..." Cut of Prehistoric Planet, more focused on locations rather than biomas, to be more specific, focused on Continents like, Asia, North America, Australia, Europe, Africa and South America + Antarctica, however there were segments (mostly the marine ones) that were a headache to know where to put them, so... thanks for all the clarifications! I'm looking forward to finish this "project" as soon as possible so thanks for making this pretty much easier! Hope you have a wonderful day!

Person from Russia here. Okhotsk-Chukotka is almost correct, but more correct way for an English speaking person to pronounce "Okhotsk" is "Oh-hotsk". In most cases, when you see "kh" in Russian names it is actually "hh". Same goes for "Khabarovsk Krai". It is "Hhabarovsk Krai" (maybe it is easier if you reimagine it as "Huh-barovsk"?) Thanks for the video!

I honestly think the shorter runtime of the S2 episodes is a perk. Everything feels much more streamlined, and it feels as if they listened to the critiques about not name dropping locations and specific species enough as well. Fewer segments also serve to give more time for the ones that exist to breathe and be further fledged out. I really liked S1 but I think S2 perfected the formula, it's the season I return again and again.

Honestly, an unpopular opinion but Forest is my number 1, because I loved every single segment and I like how it jumped too different types of Forest, from Swampy forest, to Ginko, to conifores and tropical and I really don't mind the fast pacing of the episode. Austroposidon at the start I will agree is too short, but I don't mind since we got another sauropod with a good design as always and we see how they actually acted in their environments when they are not going to another environment for breeding purposes. I also absolutely loved the aftermath of the herd bringing trees down it shocases how all kinds of plaints are trying to race to get the most sunlight as possible because of the shades that are created by taller trees. Triceratops is my top segment of this episode (massive bias because it's my fav dino) I absolutely love how they gave each trike a unique shape of their frills and horns, they could have just copy pasted adult models, but no they went threw genuine effort to make each trike feel unique. Of course there is the star of the episode the baby Trike and I love that he looks like an actual juvenile Trike instead of an undersized adult and he's just so cute. And I love when they entered the cave the show for the first time uses the night camera making the scene very realistic and thank god that baby survived and it ends with all of them using clay licks. Carnotaurus, I love it starts with him clearing the Forest floor and we know how hard that is as Austroposidon segment showed us. I love the sound effects they used and especially how they showed how vegetation vibrates as he calls for a mate. His dance was absolutely adorable and amazing, although I do wish that they used more colours on the arms to make them more colourful and the best part about that dance is the fact that it's suported suported by sience making this scene very plausible. Qianzhousaurus hunt I would say is the best segment of this episode from the location to the way it's shot and camera movements to the visuals, it did a perfect job showcasing a Tyrannosaur hunt that feels natural and teryfiying, like seeing all of these Corythoraptors peacefully eating nuts and then to show Qianzhou slowly approaching and not blinking, scary stuff, but when we see her executing that hunt it fails (wich is what happens in most hunts as Attenborough said it) wich shows that nobody is perfect even if we commonly acousiate that Tyrannosaurs are the kings of the dinosaurs they still aren't perfect beings and fail from time to time and the second time the hunt happens I really love how when Qianzhousaurus succeeds in her hunt she slips showcasing just how hard hunting Corythos was Forest fire segment it starts catastrophic with Edmontosaurus mother and calf having to be very careful when evading the fire and I like how they go slow when evading fire, despite how we commonly think that they would run when seeing danger, wich shows how coutios Edmonto mom was and it saves her babies. And instead of the aftermath being somber and tragic it's actually suprisignly hopeful as it shows how it can help animals in some ways despite the destruction like Atrociraptor (I absolutely how it looks like a ground dveling hawk) using burned wood to get rid of it's parasites in feathers and Anodontosaurus eating charcoal to splement it's diet, although I do wish they showcased Pachyrhinosauruses rolling around to get rid of the parasites like in the concept art, but anyways this segment was great Therizinosaurus, first I like how the segments start with glowing mushrooms taking advantage of roting trees and we see our three stars baby Therizinosauruses trying to get too sweet delicious honey, wich is a nice change of pace for therizino to eat, because we comonly sea them eating plants and leaves and here they are looking for honey at night and it did a great showcasing how despite their size baby theris are good climbers and way they get to honey they unfortunately pay the prize by getting stinged, but then when adult comes in and saves the day by unknowingly helping them getting honey by destroying the bee hive, also I absolutely love how we see it from the perspective of babies just how huge Therizinosaurus was and that one day they could get as big as him and in the end they get their honey Hatzeg island, first of all I love it starts with seeing giant trees and we see Telmatosaurus a small hadrosaur being nowhere near their size, like we commonly acousiate with dinosaurs being undefeated giants that roamed the earth and yet here we see dinosaurs barley being eich is even more ironic because we saw at the start a giant Sauropods knocking down trees like they were nothing and then we see baby Zalmoxes (I absolutely love how this show took dinosaurs that get barley any mention in media like Zalmoxes, Qianzhousaurus, Mononykus, Masiakasaurus, etc. And made them into an iconic stars of this series) and as they run on the log one of them unfortunately gets snached up by Hatzegopteryx the top predator of Europe and despite that we saw just a few minutes ago this beast eating a helpless baby, the rest of the segment is superisingly peaceful with Hatzegopteryx slowly traveling threw the forest to get to the beach where we also see animals that we saw earlier in the segment and honestly it's great how the season 1 ended on the very first environment of this season and instead of the show ending with K-Pg exctinction like with most paleo docus it instead ends with the mighty Pterosaur stretching his wings and launching of a beach and flying at sunset on our Prehistoric planet. (Sorry for typing mistakes that I made)

3:04:49 I just want to point out that animals have huge ranges that can span entire continents. In fact, the only times when animals have small ranges are either because of geographic barriers or because humans have hunted them to near extinction. Just take a look at the ranges of White Tail Deer and Red Foxes, both animals are of similar or smaller size to that of a Corythoraptor, and yet they're everywhere. Especially in the case of red foxes, which are all over North America and Eurasia, and yet, they are fairly small animals.

Regarding the Edmontosaurus scene in Ice Worlds if they were E. regalis, they were extinct by 68 million years ago. If this scene in particular is after or around the time E. regalis went extinct then they would be E. annectens but if not then perhaps this is a species of Edmontosaurus that's intermediate between regalis and annectens just not described as such.

The Quetzalcoatlus could have just been described as flying from Texas to Montana, since flying that distance wouldn’t be implausible for it. Plus, the freshwater habitat it’s shown living in is a good fit for the Hell Creek Formation. Furthermore, the scene with the crocodylomorphs eating the juvenile pterosaurs could also be set in Hell Creek, with Borealosuchus being the crocodylomorph eating the Quetzalcoatlus chicks.

The pterosaur hatchling scenes in Swamps and Coasts inspired a prehistoric slice-of-life story I'd like to write. Essentially, it would describe the first flights of Tapejara and Anhanguera hatchlings in Aptian Brazil, 112 million years ago. They would have to practice flying to avoid predators, such as the crocodilyform Araripesuchus and the fish Cladocyclus.

I'm just to the middle of Ice Worlds for context. I don't find the location names or vagueness to be an issue. I assume Downstream and Further North to just indicate we are a little further south or a little further north of our first scenes beginning location, maybe a little east or west. When they don't name a location in certain scenes, just proximity, I assume they do that so they're not tied to any particular formation but maybe an intermediate spot that isn't represented well in the fossil record but one could easily infer may have shared cross over flora and fauna.

I feel like part of the reason for season 2's weirdness is that it came out in such a short time, only one year after the first. Granted, that's because a lot of the scenes were already in production before being cut from season 1, and a lot of the assets were admittedly reused, but still, it does result in some oddities like the poorly animated crocs and the Corythoraptor being used in a place where it doesn't fit as well. I feel like, had they had more time to refine it, those issues would've been ironed out. That's not to say season 2 as a whole isn't great. It's only kind of mid if you compare it to season 1, but it is still absolute gold if compared with basically any other piece of paleomedia ever.

Love this so far, great assessment of a great docuseries, but I feel like you’re both nitpicking about geography a bit too much, and putting to much emphasis on accuracy… while this is undoubtedly understandable, I personally don’t let my bias for accuracy get in the way of my thoughts on any documentary. Here’s how I judge documentaries: even if the information given is wrong, do I still enjoy the documentary and think it’s well made? If yes, which is certainly the case of Prehistoric Planet, then I don’t care if it’s inaccurate. The show still has incredible visual effects, cinematography, music, sound design, mostly interesting stories, and very well written narration by Attenborough. Not perfect, I do find it to be very repetitive and speculative, and I agree with your points on the Freshwater episodes, but excellent. Maybe we’re looking for different things, but I just wanted to say that. Edit: for example, this is actually way I hate most Paleo documentaries, outside of this series and the Walking With Series. Most of them, accuracy aside, are so poorly put together with generic narration, flimsy structure, mediocre music, and terrible effects. Conversely, while the 2013 documentary Blackfish is rife with inaccuracies on Orca anatomy and behavior, I still think it’s a powerful, well made, and effective piece of documentary filmmaking.

Deserts is one of the episodes in which they utilize the natural enviroment in its impressive scale to the fullest extent Freshwater ahead of Forests? Outrageous and unexpected given your commentary went harsher on the former rather than the latter Prefer Forests over Coast as well to be honest. It is hasty, yes, but that's better than being too slow and besides the episode is concise and features a plurality of species more watchable than some of the slower pterosaur or hadrosaur scenes in other episodes

I really enjoyed Prehistoric Planet, it's far and away the best paleo documentary since the "Walking With..." series originally aired. I've watched it several times over and really hope a S3 is coming. That said, it feels like a victim of cost constraints, like they blew their budget before the end and had to make do to see it through the finish line. The reuse of a lot of species or their models, hiding a lot of action presumably to avoid the need to animate environment interactions, the rushed feeling of S2. It feels like they intended for a much bigger S1 with longer episodes, more sequences and longer ones, but those became too bloated and the show makers were forced to do a lot of edits, leaving oddly structured episodes and a lot of unused assets. They didn't want the money spent on the unused material to go to waste, so they got repurposed into an uneven second season. To me, S2 feels more like a S1.5. Love the breakdown and review! Really come to enjoy this channel! Looking forward to what you tackle next.

So I was right Trex could dive and catch fish after he eat everything else around the lakes and streams this is why they were so numerous they could also supplement their diet eating fruits veggies that's why they were at the top of the food chain

I think I can tell you where the salt lake scene was filmed. I recognised the location from an episode of Deep Look that came out a few months ago. kzbin.info/www/bejne/immbmXWNod2og7M

It’s Apple, so I’d rather give my money to a Mexican drug cartel, but thank you for the detailed review. I’ll definitely find these somewhere at some point.

Apple TV plus offers a 7 day free trial so as long as you cancel your subscription before your trial ends, you can watch the whole show for free, assuming you haven't used the trial already. Still, your comment did get quite a chuckle out of me haha, thanks for watching!
