I think the reason why Gignotosaurus is depicted with spikes/spines/quills might stem from two things. 1. The possible evidence of quill nobs on Concavenator 2. Paleoartist Dmitry Bogdanov's popular works depicting many dinosaurs like Gignotosaurus with either quills or iguana-like spines.

I definitely prefer the first JWE Giga design over the one in "Dominion." The former looks like a believable animal and the spikes have a natural vibe to them (despite it not being a possible trait), whereas the latter looks more like a Kaiju with its crazy spikes and mangled teeth. Although I'll admit I felt sorry for the JWD Giga when it got killed during that forced climax.
@william31004 ай бұрын
Why does everyone keep throwing the word "kaiju" around so much now? Plenty of kaiju in media look like normal animals. They don't all look "generic" like the dominion giganotosaurus. Also, at least the dominion giganotosaurus looks like a carcharodontosaur with the sail hump serving as an exaggerated version of the front back hump that giganotosaurus had in real life and with the whole thing looking very distinct and not looking like a T. Rex with three fingers! In terms of looking like a giganotosaurus, the dominion giganotosaurus is much more representative than some others in the past, like the land before time giga and the journey to the center of the earth giga.

All of the Jurassic World films have good CGI 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 No way! I'm really surprised by how bad CGI they could use in JW films which should honor a legacy of a legendary Jurassic Park. Compare good old JP trilogy with its phenomenal CGI that in combination with animatronics make real living animals to those poor animations in JW films. Even many pc games have better animations than any of Jurassic World films.
@DinoGuy84 ай бұрын
Technically speaking the CGI is very good. It’s just the abundance of it that made it stand out more in the eyes of many. CGI was used a lot more sparingly in the original trilogy and had a healthy mix of animatronics. To say the new films have low quality CGI, is not really a sound statement. The texturing, muscle movements, and lighting are all implemented pretty well. Again, it’s simply just the amount of times it was used.

If I were to speculate why Giganoto is often shown with spikes, I think it is because of T.rex. Documentaries trying to be accurate for the most part (Chased by Dinos and Giants of Patagonia) did not have spikes. But more popularized media especially post 2000 (but a few times prior it did happen, like Land Before Time), might often give the Giga spikes because T.rex is so rarely shown with spines. Many T.rex designs emulate Jurassic Park, which is a very smooth and simple look. So whereas Spinosaurus has the crocodilian-like head, bigger arms, sail and now tail fin to differentiate it; Giganoto falls into the same category by the layperson as T.rex in that it is a big headed, small armed big predator. That combined with T.rex most often getting the hero treatment and spikier looks often being a villain trait in visual design, is why I think Giganoto gets spikes thrown onto it a lot. To make it look different and more villainous vs. the Tyrannosaurus. IIRC the designer for JW's Giganoto did mention differing from the T.rex was a big aspect of its design.

I want to point out that the Giganotosaurus in Chased By Dinosaurs is NOT Giganotosaurus, who never lived alongside Argentinosaurus. Instead, the giant theropod that lived alongside Argentinosaurus was Mapusaurus, but the remains uncovered were fragmentary and believed to be Giganotosaurus until they were found to be distinct. This would mean we could rename the Chased By Dinosaurs Giga to Mapusaurus given this information, which makes Chased By Dinosaurs everyone's first introduction to Mapusaurus. Giganotosaurus did love alongside a giant sauropod, but it is a yet to named species known from fragmentary remains and probably some footprints, which was likely similar if not the same size as Argentinosaurus.
@bkjeong43024 ай бұрын
There’s been a lot of depictions of Giga, but there hasn’t been any GOOD depiction behaviourally. In fact this is an issue for carcharodontosaurs in general. A big part of it has to do with the myth of them being “slow killers” based on inaccurate ideas about how predators that don’t have crushing bites or venom hunt (no, they don’t hunt by biting prey and then just waiting for it to die while slowly following behind it because that would actually spend more, not fewer, calories than just trying to kill or disable your food quickly). That, and the fact most carcharodontosaur depictions only have them fighting and killing things and show no other behaviour.

My introduction to the Giga was the Lost world game and warpath. My favorite Giga thougu has got to be the Gojulas Giga from Zoids due to it's lore. Here's a quick run down: The Giga along with some other Zoids were developed using a different method than most other Zoids. They took the Wild Zoid in the case of the Giga the wild Giganotosaurus type Zoid and made it undergo a forced evolution into the Gojulas Giga. My head cannon theory is that they didn't actually took the wild Zoids as i suspect they are difficult to control without proper taming but rather a young Zoid core that'd just split from it's mother core upon the adult Zoid's death and while it is still in embryonic stage is set to undergo a forced evolution. Not much is known regarding the wild Giganotosaurus of Zi, it was known they were carnivorous and just like all theropod dinosaur Zoids of Zi, they had 3 fingers in their forelimbs, very similar to earth's Gigas. There is a pretty cool rendition of the wild Giganotosaurus Zoids printed in the box of the Japanese model kit. Regarding the Gojulas Giga itself they stand at 17m in height, 29m in lenght they are very intelligent, with great instincts pilots say they are lot easier to pilot than even the regular Gojulas, and their strenght is just insane, they are unmatched in terms of melee combat. They can equip a veriety of heavy weapons due to their size and weight but they are mostly seen equipping the Gojulas Super Cannons or the Buster Cannons for long range support, and purge these weapons when they have an opening to close in to use melee. I think the best rendition of the Giga is in the video game Zoids Full Metal Crash, where you can see the Zoid at it's full insane potential.

Thought the Primeval Giganotosaurus design is probably one of my least favourite Saurian designs from that series, I personally found it to be one of the more iconic Giga designs from film based media. Though I did find its large, top heavy head to be a bit ugly. (also that bit when he said that he used to call the Giganotosaurus 'Giganto - saurus'. I used to do that too, but it was from that book that I learned how to properly spell it (that being Gigan-o-t-o-saurus), and only recently realised its pronounced 'Giga-noto-saurus' instead)

Giganotosaurus kind of did steal the spotlight from Mapusaurus due to Chased by Dinosaurs - Land of Giants referring to Mapusaurus as Giganotosaurus at a time when Mapusaurus has been discovered, but before Mapusaurus was described/published, making people think Giganotosaurus could have also hunted Argentinosaurus in packs in addition to estimates at the time putting it as larger/heavier than T. rex, leaving Mapusaurus in the dust. Even Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia couldn't decide to call it Mapusaurus or Giganotosaurus despite it releasing a year after Mapusaurus got described/published, it took until Planet Dinosaur until it was consistently called Mapusaurus.

I wish the Giganotosaurus had the same blue, black & yellow coloration at 10:26 in Jurassic World Dominion, it would’ve really made it stand out in a good way compared to the other mega theropod designs in the Jurassic franchise, and that they would’ve taken away the osteoderms and made the spikes on the back less exaggerated, but they could’ve taken inspiration from the Isle Legacy Giga and given it 4 crests on top of its head so that it would still have a unique physical appearance while still being within the potential realm of paleontological accuracy, and lastly the Giga should’ve killed some people in the movie, along with Rexy & Spino teaming up to kill the Giga for the final battle, and with the Theri fighting the Giga as well not long before the Rexy & Spino team up happens.

The enormous Giga from Dino Crisis 2 is what really got me liking this southern giant as a dinosaur and antagonist in media. Though exaggerated in terms of size and strength likely in part due to nuclear radiation exposure ala Godzilla, the design is pretty cool and works as a final boss. Who here thinks that the Legacy Isle Giganotosaurus has the potential for being the most paleontologically accurate looking Giganotosaurus currently? Especially when you consider that the head crests on dinosaurs were likely bigger than what fossil remains show, because they would’ve likely had a keratin covering, and then some extended spike like crests that go down to the back of neck as a possibility as well, just like the Isle Legacy Giga. With all that in mind, it’s easily my favorite Giganotosaurus design, plus the sounds that it makes are awesome too, but whether or not the sounds are paleontologically accurate is debatable of course.
