Rae Estomata I’m fascinated by the geography and what the rest of the world must be like. Oxenforda (Oxford and Oxford University) is included in the storyline. So, does that mean England is included as a kingdom? Or is Oxenforda, which was the original name of Oxford, just a copy of it and just a hat-tilt from the author?
@graenovember5 жыл бұрын
@@austentrue7807 From what I know, the Continent is in short, Poland and Germany looked at sideways (so Poland would be the North and the South [where Nilfgaard is] would be Germany). Do you mean Oxenfurt? if so, Oxenfurt is a city in the kingdom of Redania (North). It's a homage to Cambridge University, but England isn't included as a kingdom. Also, Oxenfurt would be the Germanized version of Oxford.
@keshav34793 жыл бұрын
@@austentrue7807 A bit late to the thread, but the Witcher world is completely different from Earth. However, humans did arrive from Earth and that's why there are so many callbacks. A lot of names have mutated and changed into something different, but some traditions still endure in the collective conscious. The festival of Samhain is still celebrated, for example. The goddess Melitele might also be an amalgamation of many mother deities.

I love the witcher, read all the books including 'recent' prequel novel Season of Storms, it is indeed rich and fascinating world, but I would say worldbuilding wasn't the top priority for Sapkowski and so there's still so much unknown about it (the games and works such as World of the Witcher tried to fill in the gaps) and it's history and there still remain things to explore about it, I guess one of the marks of successful creation of fantasy worlds :), in terms of worldbuilding I would say Tolkien is the most meticulous, so that makes me the most unique mix a fan of both Tolkien's Lotr franchise and Sapkowski's witcher hehe. There is also lots of referenced monsters in witcher that were never given full attention, Sapkowski likes to tease all those monster names but he never shows them and the number of creatures is large (all the more for witcher to hunt ;)).
@laskr715 жыл бұрын
@@fantasywind3923 Exactly. This is what I always say. cdpr is the one who expanded the witcher world and what made me in love with the lore. cdpr introduced the details which improved the world building. For example, Bear school use heavy armor and their expertise is defense while griffin school's expertise is witcher signs that have high intensity. The cat school uses light armor and uses crossbow like the bears. The wolves are in between and specializes with their bombs. Another example is that they made queen meve super badass like in thronebreaker where she led the army to kill the swamp monster gernichora and a manticore. This is why I get angry when someone downplays the games and the contributions cdpr made with the witcher world.
@fantasywind39235 жыл бұрын
@@laskr71 it's all actually based on what's already in the world in books, Meve for her short appearances in books has the same feel like Meve in thronebreaker :) she's a tough woman who did not fear to fight on frontlines (as seen in Baptism of Fire), a cunning and strong queen, also the other witcher schools were already hinted back in the original novel saga, and prequel Season of Storms confirms existence of Cat School. So indeed CD Projekt did a great job, their video game adaptation of the franchise is one of the best out there, also expanding the material with new things, I would love for some studio with the same love and devotion to source material do something similar to Lotr and Middle-earth, there has been a lack of awesome games set in Middle-earth (I would love the open world story driven RPG in similar style to Witcher 3 set in Lotr world :)) Tolkien lore is already so extensive that the full use of it would be in itself providing loads of content hehe, *sigh* a man can dream. But hey witcher games are this unofficial continuiation of books set years after last novel The Lady of the Lake, so they naturally feel similar too with minor tweaks. Witcher books also gave numerous hints to future events in the fictional world some of which are alluded to in the games (like witch hunts and burning of sorceresses on stakes).

It is different than in Tolkien books, where you know all maps and history from the begining (mostly in the end of books) . First time i read the witcher when i was 9-10 years old, i borrow books from my local library, but not in chronological order and i think it was ok. Thank you for remind me most of the facts and history. Sorry for all mistakes, i am still learning english. Greetings from Poland where The Witcher Saga was born :P

Aen Seidhe seems to come from Aos Sidhe, the irish fae people, descended from the celtic Tuatha De Danann gods of old. Riannon appears to be from the old welsh goddess Rhiannon, believed to be a horse goddess of the Tylwyth Teg. The Kaer in Kaer Morhen is like the Welsh word Caer, which means fortress, coming from the latin word Castrum, and can be seen in the example of Caer Gwydion, "the fortress of Gwydion" a welsh name for the milky way, and may mean that the school was originally a fortress of some kind, and the word Morhen could also be interpreted as welsh for "old and great" (Mawr-hen) though the Mor part is closer to the irish cognate of the welsh Mawr, and in irish would be Morsen.

Sapkowski used lots of real names, for places and people. Many northern cities, like Maribor and Novigrad are real places in Croatia, Serbia, Czechia and Poland. I'm unaware of any real Tretogor, but it's definitelly of Slavic sound and meaning, Three-Mountain. Often these are easter eggs. Branibor fought the great battle at Brenna: both are Slavic names for Brandenburg before the Germans conquered it. Vyzima is how Slavs would call Winterfell, a place to stay and survive winter- and it's named after proto-Poland's mythical ruler.

Does it drive any Irish speakers insane that the game and show insists on pronouncing a lot of the 't''s in their otherwise correctly-spelled Gaeilge-derived elven terms? It's "Dohl Blah-haanah" not "dowl blathaRna" (you have to throw in that invisible, stereotypical Anglo back-of-the-throat 'R' in there, that thing they do when they're on stage.

You know what you can do? Take all your old videos not getting anymore views and string them together into a 5 to 7 hour compilation video. People would use it as a sleep assist video and can get tons of views. I bet you could make multiple compilation videos on your old GoT videos. I have a few of these type of videos in my playlist.

So I'm guessing dragon age ripped most of its story from this. There are way too many coincidences.
