My family has a private cemetery high up on a hill in southwestern PA, but I plan to be cremated and my ashes scattered to the winds. On another sad note, I recently learned the boy who played Longs middle child on Nanny and the Prof hanged himself when he was still young. 😢 Steve, another fine tribute thank you. ❤

It's fun and interesting, watching Richard Long's work through his career and seeing him progressing as an actor from the kid in 1946 to the man in 1974. He might not have planned on it, but once he became an actor he wanted to be a good one and said he liked the early 60s best because he got to play all kinds of roles that helped him grow. I just wish Warner Bros. would cut loose their library so we could see more of him and other excellent actors who worked for them.

Where I lived in the 60's we had one TV Station and it was a CBS affiliate so I never saw The Big Valley. Just discovered it on INSP Network and I love that show. Richard Long was great. A green burial is my first choice, cremation 2nd. None of that embalming, caskets and vaults for me!

I remember watching Nanny & The Professor in syndicated reruns. He played a TV dad, a widower mathematics professor who had three children and an English nanny. He passed away on December 21st, 1974, four days after his 47th birthday. Myra Corday, I remember her working with Clint Eastwood. She was the waitress who put a lot of sugar in the coffee. Cremation. Ashes to be scattered in Lake Ontario.

He never planned to be an actor, only wanting to get an easy English credit in high school, and got his first role because a couple of high school friends hitched a ride with a casting agent looking for someone to play Claudette Colbert's son.

I'll be cremated because it's cheaper and it will be less of a financial hassle for my loved ones. I liked his acting in Big Valley and my mother was friends with a woman who knew him. I remember as a boy having cowboy hats and toy guns and all that stuff and her friend would be over visiting & always say you look like you should be in Big Valley, when I see Richard I'll see if he can get you on the show. This joke was pretty ridiculous as I'm sure by that time they weren't making episodes anymore but I was just a kid & loved the show and cowboys and Indians. All of the people in Big Valley were awesome in my opinion.

He may have died young, but he's definitely left an indelible mark on TV and film history by being in so many things over the years! On another note regarding Ma and Pa Kettle, before the days of instant trivia lookups, for a brief time I actually thought it was possible actress Fran Ryan might have actually been Marjorie Main! Haha!

Suzan Ball Long was only 21 when she died of cancer. She had it when they met. Doctors told him her condition was terminal, but they had him keep it from her (the 50s....).
@Maria-z3mp22 күн бұрын
It seems everyone smoked in those days. A lot of stars died young, in their 40s and 50s because of smoking-related illnesses. Richard Long had heart problems, he should not have been smoking for sure, he did not take care of himself in that regard. He was a heavy smoker and drinker. His first wife Suzan smoked too, and died of lung cancer. Perhaps then, in the early 1950s, they did not yet associate smoking and cancer.

Him and Gig Young look like they could have been brothers! ...One of my favorites of him was the Twilight Zone episode portraying "David Gurney"!
@Juliaflo10 күн бұрын
Mr. Long's last regular television program was a comedy called 'Thicker Than Water', in which he played the brother of Julie Harris's character. Two magnificent actors in an underrated comedy--what is the chance ot that? Moving right along, this coming December will mark 50--yes--50 years since Mr. Long passed away. About a week later, another icon of entertainment passed away--Jack Benny.

Traditional burial for me. I really love your videos. They are very enjoyable. You really have a knack for getting the story across with compassion and humor when appropriate. I was wondering if you have any of the great actors from my home state of Connecticut on your future list? Katherine Hepburn, Rosalind Russell, and Ernest Borgnine just to name a few. I bet Ernest Borgnine would be 'interesting' with his 42-day marriage to Ethel Merman. Thank you for your great video.

He was all over TV back then and into the 70s. When they told him they wanted him for Nanny and the Professor, almost the moment Big Valley ended, he wondered why. He said he'd only been "off the tube for half a season." He didn't think the public wanted to see so much of him.

Long was a very fine actor. He had a couple of "firsts" in his career. The newspapers during the Korean War said Long was the first "Hollywood actor" drafted into the war (he had already done the Ma and Pa Kettle series and was well-known). When his Rex Randolph was moved from Bourbon Street Beat to 77 Sunset Strip, it was the first time a tv character was moved from one show to another already existing show. And I'm giving my body to science - they'll use it for whatever and cremate what's left.

I’m giving my body to science! They can have it. I refuse to be buried. The horrors of being underground in a box sounds horrible. I told my family that if they bury me I’ll come haunt them. I’d rather decompose above ground in a medical lab being taken apart by eager young medical students and surrounded by my fellow dead. Our spirits can converse hovering above our bodies. Sounds wicked!
