It is called degenerate because the number of codons are more than the number of amino acids.. the word degenerate means something low.... here number of amino acid is less than the number of codons..

Degenerate is a terrible word, a better description is redundant. Redundancy makes genetics more reliable, notice that a mutation on the 3rd nucleotide would often result in no consequences as the amino acid being coded for does not change. Redundancy saves us from mutations in other places, double stranded DNA allows simple mutations to be easily fixed, 2 sets of chromosomes allows a gene to function when the other copy is dysfunctional.
