His record at Newcastle was pretty poor too. Same summer of 2005 when Owen moved to SJP also saw the £10million signing of Spanish winger Albert Luque, who looked like he didn't want to be there, while in January 2005, we also paid £8million for defender Jean-Alain Boumsong, who had been available on a free in summer 2004 and is one of the most error prone defenders I think the Premier League has seen

1. Harry Maguire being a better signing than Nicolas Pepe is a ridiculous claim. "He did well enough for England" is not an argument from the MUFC perspective. 2. No honorable mention for Torres to Chelsea? He scored 1 in 18 compared to Carroll's 1 in 12 that season, despite costing far more. Not to mention he was ruined by injuries *before* the transfer, which is more indicative of a terrible decision than a player like Carroll suffering most of his injuries *after* the transfer.

As an LFC fan who'd enjoyed Hansen, Lawrensen and co so recently Piechnik left me aghast. I also remember he launched one shot that nearly took out the corner flag. According to Souness he was a good centre-half (as you say, he'd won the EUROs) who lost confidence and never recovered whilst at Liverpool. Aquilani was less box-to-box and more 'ward to ward', he was injured so much. And as for Diouf... it's fair to say that Jamie Carragher and he aren't bosom buddies. The former was probably our worst ever number 9 with a horrible attitude. It's fair to say the recruitment has picked up in recent years.

Yeah, He played midfield in the world cup because Svensson wanted his three best offensive players Andersson, Dahlin and Brolin on the pitch. He did it well but that was not were he wanted to be in the long haul. Acording to Brolin Leeds was not a good enviroment for him. He was apparently labeled a diva when at his first training he took a water bottle to the pitch. The informal club rule was only drinking during designated breaks.

I always feel kinda bad for Andy Caroll. Regarded as one of the worst signings in PL history, but Liverpool sold Torres on deadline day meaning they were without a striker. Plus due to Torres' massive 50m fee, much like the Neymar deal, other clubs asking prices were inflated as they knew Liverpool had more cash to spend. He was a complete panic buy, and the style of football Liverpool played would never compliment Caroll's game. Liverpool have never really played to service a big man in the Premier League so it was definitely strange to sign a player who is just that

A mention to Benito Carbone who signed for Bradford City in 2000. Carbone's arrival at Bradford City was only slightly less catastrophic than the Alien coming aboard the Nostromo. The player all but single-handedly bankrupted the club with his huge transfer fee and salary. Twenty-two years later, the background radiation of the Carbone era is still detectable, as Bradford languish in the second division.

2020-21 Not even a (dis)honourable mention to Rhian Brewster? He was (and still is) Sheffield United's record signing. Sure, he prev had a good season as a loanee at Swansea (from Liverpool), but gambling on a club record fee for a player with no top tier experience elsewhere, it was definitely a red flag. It was the epitome of how a club could make from having a wise transfer policy to a horrendous over just two years. Brewster failed to score in 27 Prem matches, being around half of them as a starter. And even with Sheffield United already relegated, Blades had to wait until mid November 2021 to see Brewster scoring a league goal for the first time as a Sheffield United player. That is... Really soul-crushing, for both Brewster and Blades' fans.
