Күн бұрын

(April 1, 2016) Four-division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner didn’t have much of a problem beating and stopping Ashley “The Treasure” Theophane at 1:10 in the ninth round in the main event of tonight’s Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on Spike event in front of a sold out crowd at the DC Armory in Washington, D.C.
At 26-years-old, Broner, who lost his 140-pound world title on the scale when he failed to make the bout’s weight limit, improved his record to 32-2, 24 KOs. The controversial fighter from Cincinnati, Ohio, displayed his strength and range of skills against a seasoned Theophane, whose record dropped to 39-7-1, 11 KOs.
Tonight’s show was promoted by About Billions Promotions and Mayweather Promotions in association with HeadBangers Promotions. Mayweather Promotions President Floyd “Money” Mayweather sat ringside throughout the evening to pay particular attention to the performances of Mayweather Promotions fighters including Theophane, Gervonta Davis and J’Leon Love, who fought on the undercard.
Broner came out in the early rounds showing his speed and versatility, only to be stymied by a game Theophane who showed his own array of boxing skills. Before long, Broner’s ring prowess proved to be too much for Theophane, as he landed power shots at will and began dominating. As Broner wore his opponent down it became easier for him to overpower Theophane and finally stop him in the ninth round.
"When people fight me, they come with their 'A' game, and he came with his 'A' game. But even his 'A' game wasn't enough tonight.
"As you know, I've been going through a lot and for me to come in here and bottle everything up and do what I did, I want to give myself a pat on the back.”
Theophane was disappointed and didn’t agree with the stoppage.
"I thought the stoppage was premature because I thought I was in the fight. Me and Broner were going at it. It looked like he was starting to get tired because he started to move around and wasn't able to stay there with me as much.
"I thought the fight was back and forth and I think the next four rounds would have been the same. No way should the fight have gotten stopped. It's a shame the referee did that. I was telling the referee, 'I'm okay, I'm okay.' Then he waived it off. I don't know what he was thinking."
Broner and Mayweather, who promotes Theophane, have been engaged in a war of words throughout the promotion. Broner challenged the 11-time world champion immediately following his victory.
"I'm a man, but at the end of the day, somebody that I look up to, someone that I admire took the chance to do an interview and talk bad about me. I'm a man - Floyd has got to see me.
"I come from nothing. I'm talking about water and Cornflakes. And I would never let a man disrespect me like that. So you gotta see me. I don't care if we're sparring or if we're fighting, let's get it on.
Mayweather did not address the comments.

All I can think of is that Broner has an unusual 'tick'; like a mental block in which he can only let a punch go when he feels the situation is ideal. It's like a frame of mind in which things have to be a certain way, like the positioning of his feet and the positioning of the opponent has to click to signal it's time to let a punch go. You can see him almost struggling mentally as if he wants to throw but he's somehow in a locked down frame of mind. He followed Paulli around for 12 rounds in their fight, driving me and many others crazy I suspect because he couldn't force himself to let his hands go. He clearly had no fear of powder puff Paulli's shots, he was walking right through them for 12 rounds. He got a split decision but he barely threw enough punches to squeak by when in fact he should have beaten Paulli down similar to the way that Porter embarrassed him. It has to be a mental thing, that's all that I can think of......?

Intense post fight interview by Broner. He and Floyd may be a boring fight, but I'm sure it would do very well in terms of PPV buys. If he and Pac managed to sell 400k in 2019, he and Floyd could've doubled that in 2016 (with some great pre fight interviews as the best part), when he still wasn't considered a bum.

Terrible stoppage. Theophane was fine for 8 full rounds, taking a few good shots along the way but still okay. He was hurt by an uppercut early in the 9th round and was covering up trying to recover. He took maybe 3 more decent shots but none were devastating, and just like that the fight is stopped. I've seen hundreds of fights in which a given fighter was hurt worse then this and just barely survived the round but the fight continued. Often one fighter gets hurt in several different rounds, about the same as Theophane was here, but even after 3 or 4 rounds where that happened the referee gave no indication that he was ready to stop the fight. Sometimes a fighter is badly hurt in the 1st or 2nd round yet it goes the distance, and sometimes the guy that was hurt wins the fight by either KO or decision. One major consideration is whether or not the hurt fighter is covering up and if he's returning fire. Theophane was covering but had no real chance to throw back because it was stopped so quickly. How many times have we all seen a fight in which both fighters were hurt more then once yet it continued? That's happened in many fights, an example that comes to mind was Ortiz vs Berto #1 or Ortiz vs. Maidana. In the latter, Maidana was on the mat 3 times in 3 rounds, all were from solid shots. He was hurt somewhat after each but refused to quit and the referee allowed him the chance to win and he stopped Ortiz a few rounds later. Ortiz was also down and buzzed from a perfect straight right early in the fight so between the 2 of them there were 4 or 5 times whereby one or the other was hurt and/or knocked down. It finally ended with Ortiz sustaining a nasty cut, he lost heart and wanted no more. Ortiz vs Berto was a classic, both guys on their ass more then once, and both hurt while remaining upright at times. It was a hell of a fight only because the referee gave each a reasonable amount of time to show if he could bounce back and they did each time. Of course we all know that sometimes a fight is not stopped soon enough and overall it's a tough call to make. Usually the decision to stop a fight is not very controversial because it's difficult to stop at the 'right' time in every case, but there are some that seem pretty obvious and this seemed that way for me. A fighter being hurt isn't by accident, the idea is to try to hurt the other guy. Maybe not enough careful thought and training isn't given to this issue? An example whereby a fight was allowed to go on for too long was Roberto Duran vs Davey Moore. Everyone in the building was screaming at the referee to stop Duran from savagely beating Moore but he never did. An official from outside the riung had to jump up on the ring apron waving his arms frantically before the pummeling ended. Another example was the 2nd fight between Joe Frazier and Jerry Quarry. My Lord I couldn't stand to watch it any longer. Frazier backed away at one point, signalling to the referee that Quarry was in some kind of trouble. It happened that the great Joe Louis was refereeing the fight. Not only was Quarry beaten to a pulp but he could barely get enough air to breathe. Then a strong left hook from Frazier ripped open a nasty gash above Quarry's left eye. It must have been filthy because Frazier immediately backed away at the sight of the damage. Frazier didn't have the stomach to continue hitting Quarry but Joe Louis signalled that the fight should continue. Quarry backed up to a rope, then shrugged his shoulders and held out both hands as if to say to Frazier,....'you're going to have to keep hitting me so do what you have to do'......It was a pretty sad situation but luckily someone got Louis's attention and he stopped it soon after. I never saw an interaction like that between fighters in any other fight. If a fight is going to be stopped like this fight was, that pretty much means that the first sign either guy is hurt ends the fight. I understand that fighters can be seriously hurt if a fight goes on too long but this was the first sign of either guy being hurt and somehow it didn't seem fair to Theophane. Since it was considered a 'home' fight for Broner the crowd didn't object but if the fight had been in England there would have been controversy I believe.
