Indeed! I love to see him freshen his rig up from now to then with new stuff that always retains his core tone. I do own a 5150iii but I have to say that the original models did not have as much gain in the second channel, it has the amount and gain structure of an old school JCM 800.. but the more recent Stealth and El34 models have way more gain in the second channel.. I can't wait to try one in person as I want to make the switch. Otherwise, the original Peavey 5150/6505 in the crunch channel with the bright switch on! It is my go to tone for thrash and it cost me near nothing. Scott's custom shop King Vs are to die for! These guys are awesome and are always very friendly and I'dd love to be able to just spend 5 minutes in the same room with them... love Joey and Charlie and eveyone that's been fortunate to be in this band.

I really like Seymour Duncans, but they're a bit pricy (worth the money though). A while back when I was looking for a decent budget AlNiCo bridge pupfor my Gibson V so I bought the IronGear Dirty Torque instead of my usual JB. Normally I'd just stick a budget brand into my cheaper mod guitars. They're pretty similar, but the Dirty Torque is only £37/$43. You'd think at that price they'd be rather crappy, but I was actually really pleasantly surprised, the DT is a really, really nice sounding AlNiCo 5, much tighter lows and nicer mids compared to a JB IMHO. More recently I've bunged in an IG Platinum 90 P90 into my LP Junior double cut, and it sounds absolutely brilliant. Dunno why Iron Gear aren't more popular TBH!

Interesting that Scott’s using .88 tortex picks these days. I have one of his ‘NOT’ picks that I caught at a show on the Among the Living tour. Don’t know what brand he was using then, but it was incredibly thin and high gloss. His sound was still crushingly heavy. Had the pleasure of meeting the dude on the State of Euphoria tour too. I’ll be seeing them live next week too, almost exactly 35 years since the first time. Damn, where did the time go?!! 🤘
@claudevieaul1465
@claudevieaul1465 10 ай бұрын
I played thrash back in the day, and was used to thin picks as well: Tortex 0.60 (orange) or even 0.50 (red)... It's something you get used to, but also it helped as I played guitars with Floyd Rose tremolos - you needed a slightly lighter touch to chug in tune 🤣🤘 Nowadays I usually play rhythm with a hardtail, and that enables me to use heavier picks (Dunlop Jazz!) and I can easily move between one or the other...

Wrong. Seymour himself has said it stands for Jeff Beck (because he originally made it for Jeff Beck), but is often marketed as "Jazz and Blues" for legal reasons because Jeff Beck refused to endorse it. At the end of the day it is still the Jeff Beck model.

@@officialmetalwill no he does not. No official endorsement or naming with Jeff was ever formalized so JB matching Jeff’s initials is merely coincidence. JB means ‘Jazz Blues’ or ‘Jazzy Blues’ which was the style of music the prototype was designed for.

I think most pointy guitars only look good if they've got vintage style aesthetics, otherwise, the majority tend to look fuckin' redonculous, basically something a massively misinformed 14-year-old would buy with his combined Xmas, Birthday & Confirmation/Bar/Bat Mitzvah money. Also, they date faster than Disco and neon legwarmers. Those fuckin' hideous custom graphic Dean Razorbacks spring to mind. Most, if not all of the time I reckon you can only get away with it if you're playing it ironically: Eg Satchels' signature Kramer Pacer.

I once put 12's on my ESP Viper in Drop D for some reason, all it did was annoy my fingers and make me cramp up. Too much tension makes your tone all crappy, in all honesty, you usually need a bit of flap on your strings for a good tone. Also, what's the point in punishing yourself, if you're using a lighter gauge just adjust your playing a bit so it's a bit less neanderthal. I switched to D'Addario 009-046s, You can still dig in hard, but not punish yourself when it comes to leads and bends. Also, if you're recording leads with a Floyd or Kahler stringing the guitar with a set of 7 or 8s can sound pretty fuckin' hilarious, even better if you're using a DigiTech Whammy!

I wish there was a little more time from Donais. I'm an old hardcore metal guy and he was always great in Shadows Fall. Also Brian Fair in Overcast. I miss the old days!!

EVH!!!!!....Eds equipment has made as much as an impact as his playing....extreme metal bands still use his stuff. I love seeing it. Nobody in history has done more for guitar,pound for pound, that one Edward Van Halen.

I totally agree, Eddie is the most influential, but Vai also had some huge contributions as well.

That CheckerBoard is awesome although I reckon it would look better with a zebra pickup instead of the check pattern (yeah I know that the original has that but so what haha)

Several things I got from Scott years ago was the pick thing. I started scoring the picks after one of his interviews and then I stepped it up a level. I take a hot soldering iron and run the tip randomly around the gripping area. It actually raises a sharp edge and is SO good. And I also began using the NYXL strings. The Ernie Ball 8 gauge strings sound like ass, but the NYXL 8's sound BETTER than 9s or 10s. They are amazing. But I am not beating the shit out of them every night like Scott, so mine last as long as I want them to. But I also clean and oil the strings regularly

Tony iommi uses 8/32, so the tone isn’t in the size of the strings but in the fingers (ironically)

With Tony's fingers, I seriously doubt he could play anything heavier. Along with his playing style, it certainly gives him a really unique tone. I imagine tuning might be a pain in the arse at times though.

Billy Gibbons uses very light gauge too. I know he's not metal but his tone is killer!

First saw these lads supporting Metallica at Newcastle Mayfair in 1986 - James had a broken arm and his tech was playing rythm guitar. Anthrax blew them off the stage that night IMHO. Great to see them still making good music today.

The difference in the green guitar's tone has to be the Steve Harris wristband, 100% guaranteed to provide more bottom end 😆
