The main sample is a seven minute jazz track. The part he samples is one bar, in the middle of the track. It's unbelievable how he chose that little piece of music. He truly was the greatest of that time, I learned so much about music listening to everything he touched. Premo is a true pioneer.

If im not mistaken, Dj Premier said this beat was kind of a diss or knock at the kind of hip hop that was playing on the radio. He said he was trying to do 'elevator tunes' (music playing in when the elevator doors close). But it surely worked out. Check out his Drink Champs episode with Pete Rock, hip hop jewels were dropped during that episode! By a huge hip hop head in Botswana, Africa!

Mass Appeal is more than a Classic, it's Legendary. How you took a random bar from Da Youngsta's and made it into one of the most well known samples is crazy. To me the timing of the sample and the beat at the very beginning was just something magical i cant put it in the right words, The vocal sample just rides the beat on each word like it was made for that. I'm 44 now and still get goose bumps and my hair stands up when I hear Mass Appeal, that beat with the vocal sample, + Guru (May he Rest in Peace) spittin on the track was over the top. I'm just talking about the vocal sample here, there's so much more in the song that deserves attention!
