Shout out to my man Drake Goodrich (rest in peace) who brought the DWYCK cassingle to science class in ‘92 and played it the entire class period. I was blown away, but also confused because I had Daily Operation. “WHAT IS THIS???” was my reaction. Two years later when they put it on “Hard To Earn” the song STILL felt new. That’s how long records lasted back then. True definition of a classic.

I’m a UK rapper and producer that goes way back and I remember losing my mind when I first heard this track. So fresh and funky no matter when you hear it. The drum break is one of those classics that everyone was using at the time, but this is one of the best renditions. It got in my head so much, that when making beats, I have to try hard not to bite it. I had DWYCK and Faking the Funk on repeat back in the day! Peace n love to the whole squad and R.I.P to those who passed ❤ 👊🏾👏🏾🙏🏾

I was an intern at D&D studios from 98 -99 and then an executive at D&D records from 2000 till its closing in 2008. I was very young when I asked Primo in the studio what “DWYCK” meant and he told me specifically that it stood for, “Don’t You Wish You Could Know!” I was just a stupid, young intern at that time and everyone laughed when he said it. Till this day, that is what I believe it means.

One of the greatest hip hop songs ever got its name from a joke. Who would have knew? Always thought it was named after the sound of the stratch on a record. That era was so creative. We will never get that level of creativity in today's music and world. I always wish 90s hip hop didn't peak so fast. By the time we got to the end of the 90s, they did everything

Random memory from that In Living Color performance: Marlon Wayans absolutely buggin’ out the whole performance. He kept doing all these crazy steps with random people the whole time. He gets Shawn in with him at one point. He gets Smooth to start, like, side stepping really quick. I think he even gets Jim Carrey to start buggin’ out at a point. Dope visual. I remember watching an episode of The Boondocks when the little girl had a Lemonade stand hustling her Lemonade and Ed Wansler took a cup and said "Lemonade was a popular drink, and it still is" I was thinking Boondocks is the most GangStarr cartoon there is and will ever be. So dope.

Wow… this explains why I remember distinctly DWYCK being a Summer ‘92 song even though it’s on Hard to Earn. Today I also learned DWYCK does not stand for “do what you can, kid”

Crazy how Hov flipped Guru's line "Lemonade is a popular drink and still is" to talk about Beyonce's album on "all the way up" remix. Hov stay in tune with the culture and that's what makes his lines HIT HARD.
