I just looked the lawsuit up on LexisNexis. Chuck D was one of the two plaintiffs in for both the copyright claim and the defamation of character. He asked for at least $2 million for copyright and at least $250K defamation. The lawsuit was settled with him and the other plaintiff. The settlement was not made public, but the suit looks very strong. I would not be surprised if he got close to the full amount. So, he absolutely sued and retained his own lawyer for his interests in the suit.
