A RWD Tesla model 3 is better value overall than the BYD premium - it may not have as many features but the software and implementation is vastly superior (many generations ahead) many elements of the BYD are noticeably a couple of generations behind Tesla. A RWD model 3 is definitely worth $3K more than the BYD seal premium if you ask me. We'll have to wait and see but I think the Highland model 3 will outsell the BYD Seal by at least 2:1 - if that's the case their pricing strategy is correct.

@@TB-up4xi Here in Thailand model 3 sales July-October =395. Add in model Y and that rises to 1,800. In the same period Atto3 sold 6,184. Dolphin September-October =4,034. Seal registrations will start showing in the December figures, but the 5,000 they brought over for launch all sold in days. I ordered a premium on the first day and after a month waiting I swapped to a AWD, because my dealer had stock. I agree Tesla software is better, but my Seal comes with free 6 Tesla PowerWalls of backup power for my house, which for me is far more important.

Exactly Michael! And the new Tesla model 3 sales will DEFINITELY collapse here in Australia, when potential M3 purchasers start to realise they are being SCREWED Tesla in comparison to this BYD Seal, because… 1. There is no instrument binnacle in front of the driver. 2. No HUD on the windscreen. 3. Lack of steering wheel stalks, including NO BLINKER stalk. 4. No included glass roof shades, to prevent overheating in the cabin on very hot days(BTW, Seal’s glass roof lets in less heat than the M3, based on a few comparative reviews I’ve seen). 5. No ultrasonic parking sensors. 6. FAKE, not real leather 7. NO option to run Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. I’m not denying that the M3 is an excellent EV in many respects, and it does surpass the Seal in the ultimate levels of technology… However, as a total package, which drives LIKE A REGULAR ICE vehicle(minus the petrol engine) -ie, driver’s instruments, stalks, etc, the Seal is an absolutely COMPELLING package, and IMO beats the M3 hands down, with a $5,000 price saving to boot !! I predict the Tesla M3 sales will COLLAPSE by 60%, with those lost sales ALL going DIRECTLY to the Seal (it’s interesting to note that Tesla Tom, as one of Australia’s foremost experts on EVs, has chosen this BYD Seal after having a string of 4 Teslas😳😳). Particularly when WORD gets around, and also since the Seal now has almost immediate DELIVERY - about 1-2 weeks!! Model 3’s are still not scheduled to arrive here in Australia for at least 1-2 months, in quantity.

Great choice for a new car Tom. Regardless of it being an EV (which is, of course, a huge bonus) it's just a fantastic car. Now being the owner of a Model 3 and Seal myself, they are really too different to each other to be direct competitors, despite what many people in the industry and media are trying to claim. Each offer their own benefits (ahead of the other car): Model 3: 1. Great handling 2. Great efficiency 3. Instant accelerator response 4. One pedal driving 5. Mature software Seal: 1. Quiet and comfortable ride 2. Luxurious interior 3. Enough buttons to make operation easier, without being a button fest 4. HUD 5. Stalks (can't believe we even have to list this as a benefit, thanks to Tesla 🙄) 6. Great heat rejection by the glass roof (Tesla is an oven, in comparison) I am hoping BYD can add instant accelerator response and one pedal driving via a software update. I have read their approach may be to help ICE drivers feel comfortable switching to an EV, but existing EV drivers no longer want these legacy ICE disadvantages.

Nice one Tom. Been driving mine for the past 2 weeks. Besides the ADAS annoyance it's been fantastic smooth Grand Tourer. You'll be one of the first reviewers in AUS to test out the Seal Premium. I've test out the stereo and the best experience is side load Tidal into the system and play that directly with surround setting turned on.

@@stevenleonards4843 Higher quality lossless if you go with HiFi Plus tier. Most Audiophiles either use Tidal or Qobuz for music streaming. There are reports that native Spotify on the Seal has low volume issues (i haven't test this out my self).

Test drove the Premium the other day. I liked it (Model 3 owner at the moment). I got 14.2kWh/100km on the same drive as I get 13.0kWh/100km in my M3. That was with the aircon on. So I reckon a real world range of 570km WLTP from the 82kWh battery is fairly close. That is as long as the energy meter in the car can be believed. There are 2 wasted switches in the Seal that could be better used for something else. The first is the screen rotation button on the steering wheel. It’s replicated on the screen itself and would be better as a programmable “hot key”. The second is the scroll wheel on the centre console for changing the drive modes. That function could easily be moved into the touchscreen (how often do you change drive modes?). I would map it to fan speed. A shortcut to the ADAS settings would be good. At the moment it is 4 button presses when you first start the vehicle. Or even better, remember the settings from last time. I know that is a regulatory thing, but I would be happy if it just came up with a placard that said “The following features are turned off. Click Accept.”

Congratulations Tom. Seeing your Premium makes me wonder if I should have gone for the Premium instead of the Dynamic. My feel test driving the Performance and Dynamic is really different because Performance has selective dampening suspension. I can feel more of the road bumps on the Dynamic. Given that there is a lot of storage (i.e., boot and frunk) it would have been good if a space saver wheel could have been fitted to this vehicle as standard. Perhaps a minor point for some, just a better alternative compared to a tyre repair kit and particularly when doing country trips. While there are third party options, a factory fit is better and the wheel is properly secured when stored in the vehicle. Thank you for the interesting video.

What a Lucky man, I ordered a Seal Premium (in Spain It is called as "Design") but in my Country the this Seal RWD 313cv does not have the Head Up display.... It is exclusive of the Seal Performance 530cv ( in Spain It is called Seal Excellence) Did you check the 313cv power ?? It is good for you? BYD said to me that in january they Will deliver the Cars finally...so now facing the Long wait.... Again, I would be more than Happy if in Europe BYD incorporates the Head Up display in BYD seals 313cv RWD like yours has. Will you record a new video analysing your Driving experience? Got one for the weekend. Great looking car - (Just the) driving experience of the car is great! Turn signals works better than on my old Tesla, so is the turning circle on the Seal. However, the software feels years behind Tesla and other competitors (test drove Ford, Polestar among others): Traffic signs are not being properly recognised, (showing 30 miles on a highway or 90 on a 30m limit) and then the beeping of the speed limit did drive me nuts. Navigation did additionally also show the (more accurate but often time also wrong) speed limit. The 360 cameras need constant cleaning. Voice recognition did understand me well but sadly never acted properly (text was visible on screen). Navigation doesn't include charging stations to reach a destination. Charging at home was less of what I get from a Tesla (11.5kW versus 5.3 at best and 4.3 on average). Same cable, same outlet. During the test weekend the car had twice some interruptions where pressing the START button didn't do anything. The test car I got also had issues with distributing windshield washer fluid while driving and sometimes one door failed to lock. I very much like the design of the car and how it handles on the street - but the software makes it unusable for me. Now I wonder if I'm the only one who experienced all these issues.

Looks really good from a physical vehicle PoV. I am really interested in the software though. I reckon software is going to be more and more one of the features that you choose a car for, especially as autonomy becomes more of a thing. I think non-Tesla manufacturers are still playing catchup on the software/driver assist features. I test drove an Atto 3 and turned off those features as they were fairly rubbish, even the regen braking was pretty crap compared to the Tesla X and Model Y’s I’ve driven.

The regen braking is further accomplished through the brake pedal, usingthe Bosch system. So it is not a regen issue for you but a one pedal driving issue. The software works pretty well it just doesn't do enough yet, the app is also missing a few Tesla features such as dog mode, sentry mode and remote charging control.

Yep, the V2L is potentially quite useful for various uses. Having the GPO outlet charger is also useful, but only charges the car at 1.3kw (in the Atto 3), so won't be much different in the Seal. Still, an overnight charge of around 12-14 hours will top up about 30%. Maybe a bit less in the Seal as it's a larger battery in the Premium and Performance, so say ~25%.

The Seal is a very nice drive but not as sharp, sport mode might fix that. Seal back seat much roomier and more comfortable than the Highlander.

Location can unfortunately have a lot to do with insurance cost. For me down here south of Hobart the Seal Premium is ~$1095, Performance is ~$1145. M3 RWD is ~$1100 and the M3 Long range AWD is ~$1245 all with $1525 excess including glass cover. Shop around for quotes each and EVERY year, as there is no benefit being loyal, unless they remain competitive. I usually go between Suncorp and AAMI, even though they are part of the same insurance group. Still waiting to test drive the Premium and Performance before committing. I'll probably also have another drive of the M3 Highland RWD as well but leaning towards the Seal. Just need to make sure I'm not going to scrape the front bumper on the Seal on a steep bit of my driveway. The clearance on the Seal is not brilliant. We have an Atto 3 around 2 months old. Happy with it, but hope they reduce the safety nagging a bit more with OTA updates.

Its a great car and as you said, not too fussed on the highland to warrant breaking my novated lease and going the highland. Plus the new performance / ludicrous 3 will be over the LVT i reckon so wont be able to get it under novated lease with FBT exemption.

@@LudicrousFeed Really interesting to hear that, given you had the last of the RWD Model 3's which has been refined over the life of the car. I have wondered when reviewers are comparing the two versions how big the difference actually is from the last of the old to new, especially for city commuting and in Australia highway driving limited to 110kmh. I never find my 2023 M3 noisy or uncompliant over bumps and in fact run 45 PSI on the e-primacy tyres as I prefer a slightly harder ride.

Have a deposit on a M3RWD and seal. Test driven both dynamic and premium variants. Tempted by the dynamic for the cost saving over the model 3, but the 3 is definitely a more engaging car to drive. The seal has very numb steering and is tuned much more for comfort. It isn't an enjoyable car to drive aggressively. The software is not anywhere near as refined and sophisticated as the tesla. I want to say yes to the premium but given the seal's many shortcomings, feel the tesla is a better buy if going for the premium. Would be interested in your thoughts.

​@LudicrousFeed what I observed was the dynamic was actually a softer and more supple ride than the premium. The only reason to get the premium is the additional 80-100kms of range. Even with the auto hold switched off and in sport mode, the response to throttle input is lagged, the car takes a moment to build momentum before it takes off. It all feels somewhat artificial. The model 3 responds to inputs with immediacy, it feels like your driving the car, whereas with the seal it feels you provide instructions to the car which it executes. I would love to get the premium, but thinking the dynamic with its lower weight and softer ride is actually a more enticing prospect. It's more responsive around bends and turns, the 0-50 time is more than adequate for urban driving, and if you've got another ICE at home for longer trips, the extra 100km of range on the premium is redundant. Better to save 10k compared to the premium. If you spend 60k or above, the highland I feel is a superior overall product despite the removal of stalks and us sensors.

Did you put the steering wheel on "Sports mode"? I find the acceleration of the Seal more comfortable. It's tuned for Comfort on city driving. Coming from a European luxury car with family in tow i prefer it better than the instant torque of the Tesla.

I believe after the first car you can not claim the 3k rebate. As you bought the 3 before (from memory your first new car and assuming the Y was in your wifes name so she got the rebate) you should be ineligible for that. You do get the stamp duty concession though. After Jan 1 you pay for it and claim it back if ordered before the end of the year.

The Tesla M3 and Y are similar to a traditional car experience. Just the Tesla has one pedal driving. Takes about 30secs to get used to one pedal. Perhaps it could be included in the BYD's as a selectable option in a future OTA update?
