Why I Love Sonic 06.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2006 is probably the most hated Sonic game of all time. People always ask me why I defend it, so here are my reasons why I love Sonic 06.

Great that you made this. These types of videos are nice additions to the Sonic community. Always great to see new ideas or messages that take risks. George Summitt well no games are objectively bad. Sonic 06 for example is glichy, has confusing level layouts, bad story that makes all the characters look dumb, terrible lip sinking, bad graphics for the Xbox360 and PlayStation 3, unacceptable load times, and the list goes on but that's not really my point. my point is it doesn't matter if the game is good or bad what matters is the players enjoyment of the game. games have two ways of being looked at objectively and subjectively. looking at Sonic 06 without any personal opinion this game is bad and the best thing about it is it's music. but subjectively I might not mind the load times and all the other things people complain about. now personally I don't really like sonic 06 but I don't think it's as bad as people say but I think it's still terrible. but overall my opinion doesn't matter for you or anybody else playing the game so even if the game is bad you shouldn't care if you find enjoyment out of the game.

Did you know the whole story would have been different yes sega wanted a mature approached game but the princess soleana and all of that was fully intended for another game sega just had to morph both games together to suit there deadline plus the sonic team had to split up into 2 groups yuji naka redesigned and they had barely any time to make it. Best Sonic 06 related video on the internet! People just hate on this game for fun (and even without ever playing it). Lets be honest here, the game is indeed bad because its incomplete, yet, its super fun and the Sonic game with the best and most original ideas and features. *The stages design is the best in any Sonic game, people just don't believe it until they play them modded on Generations. *OST if the fucking best (His World > Live and Learn). *While Heroes is the Sonic game with most playable characters ever, 06 feels like it actually is. In Heroes all teams feels almost the same. The game pretty much has 3 different character with many skins. 06 on the other hand have 9 different playable characters with their own move set/skills/habilites. Yeah the game has some stupid glitches, but its fun and playable. And the most important thing here, the game has an insane amount of content. Long Story, missions, collectibles. What else you want? Generations its just dash to the end, so is Generations really better than 06??? If 06 were complete and polished, it would clearly be the best Sonic game ever.

That's like saying if Unleashed didn't have the werehog and more playable characters it would be the best Sonic game ever, of course they would be but we're talking what was released to public not what could've been. Masen Means Not exactly everything. Unleashed was complete and the werehog was intentional and there are a lot of people who likes his gameplay, I mean, not every Sonic game must to be like full speed. Despite some things in the story (which I really like, don't get me wrong), glitches, loading times and unpolished gameplay were unintentional, and were caused by the fact of the game being rushed. Besides in the whole video he never says "Oh if it was complete it would be the perfect Sonic Game". He only gives his opinions on the game, even with its flaws.

TheRealSonicFan eeeeh. I'm sorry but that's a huge bold claim to say that it would be the best sonic game ever if it was complete. There's ideas in this game that sound good on paper, but where horribly executed. No amount of polishing can fix what was already a poor concept. Silvers lost potential isn't going to magically be fixed if the game was completed. The idea of making a psychic hedgehog with OP abilities work in sonic's gameplay takes much more thought than you'd think. It would have to be reimagined from scratch. Gems also were a wasted idea as most of them don't really seem built for the game. You can still beat the entire game without them anyway. Seems like a pointless addition. Now as for missions, while I do agree that longer missions is a good thing, 06's missions are just plain boring. They're a bunch of mundane tasks handled with bland NPC's with no personality (with the exception of that Sonic Man guy). Missions are mostly remembered for their infamy and how many anyone has to endure when they decide to 100% the game. It's not like the missions in unleashed with much more memorable NPC's. And at the very least those missions helped you in gaining more XP, and gain certain skills you needed. In 06's they amount to nothing and the reward isn't worth it. Long story short, this game would be decent or average at best. But far from being the best sonic game ever. Everyone keeps blindingly claiming that this game can become some sort of overnight success if it was ever finished or remade. But it's not as black and white as it looks.

I think that the story and the missions would be the only thing holding the games back. Let's face it. The story was very inconsistent, it showed no personality for any of the main characters except Shadow, and the romance aspect almost makes me sick. The missions faced an entirely different problem. They were very, very boring. They were very unmemorable and they caused 4 LOADING SCREENS EACH! The actions stages were actually really fun once you get over the occasional glitches here or there and the hub world was surprisingly fun to explore and mentally map out. All in all, Sonic 06 wouldn't be the best Sonic game, but it would be about as controversial as, say, Sonic Unleashed.

I’m glad that you made this video. You gave your opinion inside and out, and we definitely need it. What I’ve learned once I saw this video is that you shouldn’t listen to any reviews and others opinions about a game, ya know if they say it’s bad, but rather listen to yourself see if it’s something you want. The game is clearly unfinished, I know but that’s kinda why I bought it, it was interesting haha. Funny thing is, I bought the game and knew a lot about it, I mean the fanbase talks a LOT about it. I’m not at all afraid to say that Sonic 06 is my third favorite Sonic game of all time. I went into the game knowing that people hated it, and I knew just how despised it was. But when I played it, I really enjoyed it. I would always play it whenever I could because of how much I enjoyed the game, and I’m actually so close to 100% completing it….and it most likely would be completed 100% if my Xbox 360 didn’t die out on me for good…I just can’t hate this game. Yes it’s not the best in the series, but it’s not even close to being the worst either, or even one of the worst games ever made.

Oh, always great to see other folks who like Sonic 06. The game is flawed, no argument here, but there are quite a few things which I can honestly enjoy and wish they were still present in the new Sonic games which barely have anything that I loved the series for.

I like the game. But no debate there's flaws. The reason being was the game was rushed and that was cause Microsoft was rushing Sega to get it out by the end of 2006 otherwise Microsoft would terminate all future Microsoft/Sega contracts; in other words Sega just rushed through and didn't go through and do a bug check. Also, the team split in half, one half developing Sonic and the Secret Rings and the other developing Sonic 06.

To admit, it was MOSTLY Sega's fault due to them not doing a proper bug check, and Microsoft had a part in that too. Like I said, Microsoft wanted Sega to release the game by the end of 2006 or else they'd terminate all future Microsoft/Sega contracts. Half of Sega's team was developing Sonic 06, the other half developing Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Also, when i was younger i heard from alot of sonic stuff that they made "fun of" and said its "bad" but i dint really get it why, i found out it was ONLY because of the "terrible" voice acting (its not) and "many" glitches. Shadow the Hedgehog was a fun, darker spin on the Sonic Series. Sure most of the story was confusing & hard to follow because of the path system, although it was fun. People have dumb reasons for hating Shadow's game saying "You have to beat the game 10 times to see the True Ending" among other crap. You're supposed to take 10 vastly different paths through the game to unlock the Last Story. Sure you always start at Westopolis although that stage is tons of fun to replay.

@GREENWOLF 1337 True, I thought the daily progress thing was the normal way people played games in the 6th Gen Console era. You aren't supposed to Bingeplay Shadow's game. Besides because of the path system you're only going to have to replay early game missions to get the 10 playthroughs needed to play the Last Story. Westopolis has 3 missions, then there are 7 2nd stage missions & 9 3rd Stage missions. The path system offers replayability & come to think of it don't a lot of classic fans like 2 & 3K for letting you explore different paths? Kind of hypocritical that when a 3D game actually tells you to explore different paths they complain.

THIS. All of this is so true! Thank you so much for making this video, it feels so good to see someone that isn't bashing the hell out of my favorite videogame. I love Sonic 06 so much, yes it's not perfect but there is no such thing as a perfect game, I could do without the Mach Speed parts (Especially Kingdom Valley's mach speed part) and the romance between Sonic and Elise is weird although it does seem somewhat one-sided to me. The cutscenes are beautiful, the soundtrack is amazing, and the story is fantastic, the gameplay can be glitchy here and there but the glitches are sometimes helpful (Like using a box to skip Silver's ball puzzle) and almost always hilarious. I have so many fond memories of this game and it breaks my heart to see that so many people just blindly hate it because that's the popular opinion to have, even if they've never even played a single level of it. Plus the multiplayer modes are amazing to just goof around in with a friend or family member. My siblings and I to this day will spend hours just running around in the levels and messing with things that the player shouldn't be able to do or places the player isn't meant to go, Sonic and Silver are the best characters to play as if you really want to break the game or torment the person you're playing with

I remember that one time I was talking to a friend of mine that is also a sonic fan and I asked her what was her favourite sonic game, she looked at me serious and then said that she didn't want to tell me because it was embarrassing to her, then I asked her if it was 06' and she said yes, and told me that she always gets bashed for liking it. Just seeing how much hate a sonic 06' fan can get at the point of being afraid of telling anyone that they like it really says how big is the hate to the game. People need to stop complaining about Sonic 06 and see that a game is just good or bad depending on the experience of the person that played it, and it's completely subjective. sonic forces had many good things going for it and i enjoyed my first playthrough. i hated what forces meant for the franchise and the objectively lazy level design, but people can look past that to see something that is, at the very least, a fun experience. while i dont like forces anymore, its nice to know someone else does

Sonic 06 is literally one of my favorite sonic games, admittedly I love characters like shadow and silver and the graphics were amazing, way ahead of it's time and it was deep and serious and honestly at the time the load times werent bad to me. Once you put the pieces together, the plot is pretty good. 5. 4Kids cast (a.k.a. The best cast in the series, NO CONTEST) (Sega bring them back NOW!!!) 6. The story legitimately made me cry at points (Blaze's death and Elise blowing out Solaris) 9. It's not Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric 10. The BEAUTIFUL song called My Destiny (I know I just said soundtrack, but I don't give a sh*t, this song needs its own spot) 11. I experienced ABSOLUTELY NO GLITCHES AT ALL. Not as good as Chip, but a close second. Also Sonic '06 is canon, Generations confirmed that with Crisis City. That also means canonically Blaze is still alive, that made me cry with happiness.

Being able to come out and explain in full why you like a game as notorious as Sonic 06 is no easy thing to do. I never felt as if this game was as horrible as people make it out to be, but I still feel this is one of the worst games the series has to offer. It does some thing right, there are things I like about it but I can't go back to this game as I can with Sonic Adventure or Generations or Lost World for example. However the one sonic game that does deserve as much hate as possible and is despised by basically every sonic fan is sonic boom rise of lyric. That game is worse than sonic 06. Almost everyone would agree with me on that. Even people that love sonic 06 would probably agree that rise of lyric is a horrific game. Do you agree with that.

It’s always nice to revisit 06 and this video cause I first played it in like 2015 to see if it was as bad as everyone made it out to be and absolutely loved it! I 100% the game but then in 2020 that save got corrupted so I moved on to xenia and it’s significantly better than console especially with mods and the patches in the mod manager to restore beta stuff! But the unmodded version of 06 is probably my fourth favourite sonic game! The speedrunning techniques are so fun to pull off and add some good depth to the game

FINALLY a good reviewer! I’m so used to reviewers talking bad about the game without even playing and it just gets annoying. I also hate the fact that other reviewers blame the WHOLE game for being bad just because of 1 scene. But you are the 1ST sonic 06 reviewer I’ve ever seen that ACTUALLY played through the whole game, seen all the cutscenes, and actually gave an HONEST opinion. I personally love 06. Even though I’ve never played the game, I did watch TONS of playthroughs and I’ve watched all the cutscenes and I love it. Besides the Elise kissing sonic, and some other things. One day I’ll get the game and then I’ll have a rating for it. But what I’ve seen so far, the rating would be a good number. I give this review a 28 out of 10! EDIT: I did buy the game and I’m enjoying it. Haven’t beat the game yet though.

Yes! It's so awesome seeing another fellow 06 fan not afraid to state their opinion! 06 is my favorite Sonic game, probably even favorite game, ever! I think I've just had the most fun with it, especially compared to Generations and Colors. I grew up loving glitches in games which is why none of the glitches in 06 have ever really bothered me. Other reasons why I love 06: It's not too simple, there's a cohesive story (with its flaws), new and old characters come together, and I love the environment Sonic and his friends are in! It's realistic with cartoony twists, like we still get those famous loops and springs that make it his world. It's a very Italy inspired setting that's still adaptable for Sonic and friends. I think this is the most real of Sonic games we will ever have. I'm praying Forces will do at least one of two things 06 succeeded in, yet Sega has been straying away from for quite sometime: bring back old characters and make them useful rather than just Sonic's "cheerleaders", and don't be afraid to get a little edgy and dark rather than exclusively bouncy and colorful Thank you for this!!!

I remember playing the game when I was 6-7 I fucking loved it. Tho as a kid. I never fully completed the game, due to sonic's kingdom valley run, and because I didn't play shadows story. But today is the day I finally beaten it. And fighting Solaris, all three hedgehogs turning into their super form, the music and just the end over all, was such a big relief. I will forever love this game no matter what. Silver definitely my favourite out of the three. Beating the game made me so happy. The legendary orchestra music is just a masterpiece. I know this is a loooooong comment. Hopefully that's not a big deal, and it ends up informative :) Totally cool that you love Sonic '06 so much. I do too, though for completely different reasons. I enjoy it because it's a great tool/lesson for education when it comes to terrible design, writing, polish, etc. Because whether I have a soft spot for it or not, it is genuinely unfinished, poorly written, poorly designed, and broken in most places. But that means it has use as an educational tool, which I very much appreciate. Still, it's totally fine if people such as you genuinely love the game for what it does offer, and anyone who disagrees with that is pretentious and egotistical. That being said, I think there are ways you could've made your perspective and arguments a bit more effective. The first would be to not use 'everything about games is subjective' as a defense. The reality is that this isn't true. There are objective facts to be found in game design. How these facts play off of each other informs the quality of the design, which is also at least partially objective. How we then experience these things is what's subjective. For example, a game that runs at 30fps objectively gives the player less potential controller response than a game that runs at 60fps, because the game is checking for controller inputs half of the amount of times per second. However, if the game is a turn-based J-RPG, that doesn't matter to the experience near as much as it would in say a fighting game, because frame perfect inputs are not a requirement for a turn-based game. In the context of a specific game, these may be objective facts. How we feel about them is the subjective bit. Ignoring this and instead claiming that all critique is equal because all critique is 100% subjective is rather shortsighted. All opinions are definitely equal, but all critique is not. Arguing that it is actually devalues all critique in general, because there becomes no reason for one person to care about what another person's 'alternate truth' is. It stifles discussion. Why care about someone else's thoughts if the only truth is your own? That is really a small thing in terms of the actual content of your video though. It's more of an issue with the way your topics are framed, and less about the information presented itself. To me, the bigger issue seems to be - and don't take this the wrong way - that you seem a bit 'green' when it comes to understanding design concepts, balancing, and things like basic game theory. A lot of your arguments seem to stop at "I enjoyed this." or "I thought this worked well." without any real elaboration as to why. And when you do defend something, it's often with points that don't actually interface with the underlying issues. You sort of side-skirt the arguments you're trying to defend against, rather than actually defending against them. Let me use the fight with Silver for an example. Your argument as I understand it, is that the fight with Silver isn't actually poorly designed. Your argument for this is that, once you know what you're doing it's not too difficult, and it can consistently be beaten in like 40 seconds. Your defense against opposing arguments is that people thought the previous character battles in the Adventure titles were too easy, and now they're complaining that that this one is too difficult, which doesn't make sense. The problem is that none of this actually delves into the actual design of the fight, and why it may or may not work. The reason the fight with Silver ultimately fails is due to balance and a lack of polish; the fight isn't challenging... it's hard. It doesn't present a test for the mechanics the game has taught you up to that point. Instead, the fight is hard (again, not challenging) because it doesn't offer the player a clear understanding of the mechanics at play. The biggest issue is the lack of cooldown for Silver's psychokinetic grab attack. The attack occurs any time Sonic is within a certain proximity of Silver. He grabs you, yells "It's no use!", and then throws you, dealing damage. As a quick side note, even just the angle of the throw can break the entire fight, by sending the player out of bounds. This isn't an uncommon occurrence either, as you no doubt know. Anyway, this grab attack has a very short (almost instant) wind-up period, meaning it's difficult to anticipate and avoid without knowing the fight extraordinarily well. And then after he does it, Silver's recovery period is less than a second. The problem is that this very, very easily breaks the entire fight. All it takes is for Silver to hit the player with the attack once, and if they're not thrown far enough away, his AI patterns force him to do the attack again, unfairly killing the player before they get control of Sonic again. It's not an attack that can be properly defended against for newer players, and it's not one that they can easily recover from either. This is a serious issue. It ends up being an unintentional one-hit kill, which punishes players before they can even learn anything about the fight. And what's worse, is that it can accidentally (and again, fairly commonly) lead to the issue where Sonic is pushed up against a wall, and continuously picks up a ring, making the fight impossible to win or lose. You can't really get any more broken than that. And there are other issues with the fight as well, like how Sonic's physics and animations interacts with the tables and chairs nearby, the size and shape of the arena, the lack of a dedicated camera lock on to keep track of Silver, etc. But the above is enough to prove my point. Keep in mind, being able to circumvent these issues and consistently beat Silver doesn't not forgive it's issues. If someone could consistently get around the random crashes/deaths in the emulation on the Xbox One you outlined in your video, that doesn't suddenly make said crashing okay, right? Same thing here. You can't base the quality of design off of only the perspective of someone who's mastered a game's quirks. It has to be looked at from the opposite angle too. And from a new player's perspective, this fight feels impossible to beat in a way that doesn't exploit glitches or AI patterns. It's a huge and unjustified, confusing difficulty spike, with enormous repercussions if you lose all of your lives. Critical thinking is about noticing when something is done particularly well, or particularly poorly, and realizing when you may unintentionally be desensitized to it. Being used to terrible control for example, is not an excuse for said terrible control. The control is still terrible And that's just the Silver fight. This sort of critical thinking is what actually matters when looking at the quality of a game. Obviously as you said, your video wasn't intended to be a review. But it seemed like you kept trying to bring up critical points, and then struggling to find a way to properly defend them. If I was to delve into exactly why I enjoyed every single thing, the video would be 6 hours long. That's the reason I brought up the subjective point in the intro. The point is that sometimes there are things that I like about the game that you just won't, because people are different. The same reason why some people like Rock music and others like Hip Hop etc. I can't objectively explain why I like more combat and longer stages in a Sonic game when others hate it. I just do. That's why I mentioned the acronym S.P.E.C. Good level design IS in many ways subjective as (as I said in the video) people want different amounts of the 4 elements of SPEC. So this isn't a case of me not being able to critically defend my points, as subjective points can only be defended so much, they're just personal preference. I'm not here to convince you to like something because I said I like it, I'm just giving you my perspective. Of course there's objective things such as frame rate, glitches, etc. but I did mention them as legitimate cons at the end of the video. I don't know if you watched that far in the video as many people don't before commenting. As for the Silver fight, you don't need to be skilled at the game to beat it, I figured it out pretty quickly. The reason why the game doesn't give you time to recover after Silver first catches you is because you're not supposed to get caught in the first place. Understanding a bosses attacks and avoiding them is part of playing and beating a game. Of course going out of bounds is a technical issue and that can't be defended, but I did mention glitches as a con in this video. As someone whose played this game for 10 years, I know over 80% of its glitches, but if I was to sit down and describe every glitch in detail, this video would be 6 hours long. As for the boss being "poorly designed", many other Sonic games have similar issues where the strategy to defeat a boss isn't clear on the first try. Admittedly those games might give you hints after your first and second deaths so you don't stay stuck forever (For example: SA2). This game does have that in certain bosses, but unfortunately not in the Silver boss, so that is something they could've done to avoid people getting stuck. A simple "Stay away from Silver unless he's already carrying objects, then attack him" would go a long way. The problem with having the camera focused on Silver (as you suggested) is that Silver is not constantly centered, he's always moving. If they were to implement that I can imagine the next complaint would be "I wanted to go left but Silver moved and screwed up the direction I was going in". Something like that worked in the Egg Genesis boss, but I can't imagine it working here. Just something to think about.

First off, apologies if my comment came off as condescending or mean spirited. It wasn't intended to be. I tend to naturally like discussing things such as this, and be overly verbose because I'm so passionate about game design and games in general. The extreme length of some of the videos on my own channel are proof enough of that, lol. I didn't necessarily mean that you should expound on every facet of your opinions on the game, so much as that the people who disagree with you are more likely to treat your opinions with a large amount of disrespect if you don't take preventative measures. Basically, you'll find less people flame you if you present more solid and defensible arguments. They don't have to be long, so much as sturdy. Again, I'm not saying that this video is dumb, or that you're dumb or anything for not doing that. I'm not even saying you have to do it or anything; just that you might find it beneficial :) Yes, I watched the whole video :) Being someone who makes longform content of a highly analytical and critical nature, I always like to give the content of others the respect it deserves before I comment. In fact, there were actually other things I was planning to potentially comment about initially, until you brought them up later in your video. As for the whole subjectivity thing, I totally get it. It's fine to state your preferences and just leave them there by themselves. But there's little point in bringing something up like the Silver fight 'being a competently designed encounter', if you don't explain in some meaningful way. Being well designed, and enjoying something are two very different things. Good level design for example just isn't subjective; enjoying level design is subjective. Yes, no idea in design is inherently bad, as games like Dark Souls or Katamari Damacy prove by subverting usual 'good design' expectations. But what context they're used in is what dictates whether it's good or bad design for that specific game. What is good design in one game can become bad design in another. Tons of obstacles in close proximity that prevent speed and flow probably aren't good design for a 2D Sonic game for example, just like tons of open stretches with no enemies in them probably aren't good design for a 2D Mario game. But swap them around and it works much better. The important thing is to look at the design goals of the game, and judge it based on that criteria. It then becomes more clear that these things aren't subjective... so much as just really, really complicated, lol. This is why things like combat and stage length in a Sonic game seem subjective on the surface, because it's all dependent on the rest of the design of the game. How everything plays off of each other in a game is like a giant spiderweb of design that all creates a cohesive whole. And one small decision can snowball and create several issues in seemingly unrelated systems. What may work in one Sonic game, or even a single Sonic level, might not work in another. Which is why I didn't comment on combat and stage length in my initial post, because I haven't really thought too much about how combat and stage length effect Sonic '06, so I don't have much to say on the subject. As far as the Silver fight goes, yes of course you're not supposed to get grabbed. But the problem is that the start-up time for the grab is too short for the amount of punishment it doles out. With that big of a punishment, it needs to be more easily avoidable without requiring that you know the fight well. Meanwhile, a lock-on could work just fine with Silver. The Egg Genesis lock-on isn't the only type that can be implemented, and how controls react to a shifting camera can be completely dictated by the developer on a case by case basis. The easiest solution is to just use a regular old 3rd person lock on like you'd get in a hack and slash, or Dark Souls, etc (though it would obviously auto-target Silver at all times, rather than having to be manually enabled). But let's assume that Silver's movement screws with control as you imply it might; let's say that every time his movements require the camera to pan drastically, the directional inputs shift along with it on a frame by frame basis. The solution would simply be to use a universal perspective for the controls, where up is always forward, right is always right, etc. Still not optimal though. So instead, use the initial system, where inputs shift as the camera moves. But instead, keep the controls from shifting until after the player resets the analog stick to neutral, or until the camera stops moving. This is the type of camera that is used in modern games with fixed perspectives that shift from camera to camera as you traverse the environment (a camera like those found in Devil May Cry or classic Resident Evil). So that there is no jarring shift due to the input direction change, the shift doesn't happen until the player stops inputting commands with the stick for a moment. Point is, there are a million ways to create an effective lock-on for Silver's fight, and Silver is definitely a boss that really needs it since both he and Sonic are quick, moving targets. Heck, there are even entirely different solutions you could use, like a fixed camera angle above the battlefield.

Don't worry, there's no hard feelings. As for the Silver boss fight, I never really said that it was 100% perfect, I never meant for it to come off that way. I just meant that people blew it way out of proportion for what it was, which is: a boss fight that's a little confusing at the start. People seem to treat it as an impossible feat that renders the whole game unplayable. I've noticed with a lot of Sonic fans that anything that is even remotely unintuitive in a Sonic game is automatically labelled bad. That's why Sonic Team has been pushing out very easy games lately (Colors/Generations). The other day I saw a video of an IGN reviewer trying out Sonic Mania, and he spent 30+ seconds struggling to get through a loop-de-loop, and these are the critics Sonic Team have to appeal to. If you remember, a lot of retro games revolve around letting the players think for themselves. Call it what you want, but I don't think it's objectively wrong to prefer that kind of approach. As for your camera suggestions, I can't really comment on them properly as I don't play the games you've listed as examples, it might be something that I'd need to try out to fully give my opinion on. I still think good level design is mostly subjective though. Yes, there are things that may be considered objective when it comes to level design. For example, stages must have clear routes so as to not get lost. Also, stages shouldn't revolve heavily around trial and error. Basically, if you're good enough (at gaming in general), you should be able to beat a stage on the first try without dying. Even if we take that into consideration, the level design in 06 is mostly good. Yes there are some hiccups in the level design (aside from glitches, as I don't consider them level design flaws as they are unintended), but as a whole, the stages were well designed. "just like tons of open stretches with no enemies in them probably aren't good design for a 2D Mario game" - but what is good design for a 2D Mario game? That's something that was created from past 2D Mario games. What if Nintendo wanted to make a new experience that changes the level design? It may not feel like a previous Mario game, but that doesn't make it bad because it's innovate. Sonic Heroes is a perfect example of that. The game took 3 types of characters (Speed/Flight/Power) and designed each level with each type in mind. That's completely different from any Sonic game that precedes it, it was new territory, but that doesn't mean we can call it objectively bad. Devs are allowed to try new things that don't fit what they've previously done, and that creates a divide amongst the fans. A lot of people prefer Super Mario Galaxy 1 over 2 because 2 was "too linear". Does that mean linear level design is inherently bad? Or is there just a preference for more open level design. Super Mario Maker is full of Trial and Error stages, and Nintendo is aware of that, that's why they give you so many lives to beat the 100 Mario challenge. But people (including myself) still love the game dearly. That's why I say level design is subjective, it's not black and white, it's (as you put it) really, really complicated. It's complicated because different people want different things, and the devs have to try and satisfy as many of these different people as possible in a single game.

Personally, I used to love Sonic 06 when I was 7-8 years old. I thought it was one of the coolest games ever. Even when I’m almost 20, I still don’t hate this game. While the game definitely could have been better, there were a lot of aspects that this game did better than the newer 3D sonic games. 1. The serious tone seems more tame than Shadow the Hedgehog, which was edgy just for the sake of being edgy (even though the game itself wasn’t terrible either). 2. The variety of playable characters, similar to SA1 and SA2, is something that the newer games is definitely lacking. 3. The music is some of the best in the entire franchise. 4. Mephiles is arguably the best Sonic villain. The game may not have been the greatest Sonic game (Sonic 3 & Knuckles), but I wouldn’t call it the worst either. The only thing I truly hated about this game... Elise.

This video completely changed my opinion towards Sonic 06. When I was a kid, I heard and saw everything the time the game came out. Now that I've finally played it for a while like last year or so I didn't like it very much but I love it to death so much that it immediately, like Sonic Adventure 1, became one of my favorite games of all time. I've completed the game and I felt very satisfied doing it because it provided me challenge, fun gameplay and the story, specifically Shadow's completely won me over. I love so much about this game. Maybe I have a soft spot for Sonic, or games that are considered bad, but Sonic 06 is NOTHING compared to other crap on the market and that's a FACT. This game has a soul and heart. I really, really, REALLY love this game!

@powerstar 2028 The Graphics for the games before 06 aren't bad, just dated by today's standards. Unfortunately graphics in the series haven't really improved since 06. The logic of just Sonic going fast via boost there isn't a need to improve the visuals is unfortunate. I personally miss the days of several playable characters in a fully 3D Sonic game. 20 years ago Sonic Adventure had outstanding graphics for its time. The game was made to show off the potential of the Dreamcast & it was epic. 06 was supposed to have a similar effect for the 7th Gen consoles, however it was a severely rushed product. At least 06 is possibly the most amazing looking Sonic Game even if it has several gameplay problems.

I'm not gonna tell you to hate 06 (I havn't even played the game to the end) but saying every element of a game is subjective is completely wrong, for example things like glitched bad textures and even bad writing are objectively flaws.
