So if you didn't already know, Sonic Runners closed down on July 27th 2016. Today we delve into the reasons why this game was not successful, and what could've been done to fix it.

I totally agree with everything you said, but I wanna ask you, what do you think the next sonic mobile game would be like, we already had the "doodle jump" type games with sonic jump & sonic jump fever, the "temple run" type games with Dash and Dash 2, and the endless runner type with Sonic Runners, so what do you think they could do next? I don't know if they are working on another Sonic mobile game, but if they are, I have no idea what it could be. Who knows, maybe they will reuse the Runners gameplay formula, but just fix all of the problems the game had.

I actually really loved Sonic Runners for a long time and it does make me sad because I used to play it so much, but like everyone's been saying the updates were just irrelevant and they could have used the updates to fix the real problems with the game, instead of just closing it down. I also feel as though they should've let players have the option to play as any of all of the characters after they had announced they were closing down the game, because I feel like there were so many more characters to unlock but of course the roulette always got in the way which really annoyed me.This is obviously just a personal opinion, but I just thought I'd put it out there.

Same, back when the game first came out (before it released in US) I had so much fun that I started thinking of ideas on how super forms could be implemented. Heck, the "final boss" cutscene had art for super sonic, so I thought, "oh sweet super sonics gonna be in this!" And then he wasnt.

Sonic Runners 1.0 was Awesome but when they changed it to the 2.0 it was Horrid. They toned down a lot of the buddies, it was harder to get red star rings, the roulette wheel was a rip off, time mode was also a rip off and it was almost impossible to get new characters. 2.0 was designed to make the game more complicated so that users would spend money but even though they toned down the buddy system it mysteriously gave the game a little more balance because some of the buddies that were weaker were now a little bit stronger and all of the stronger buddies were watered down more.

The mobile games I play now are PitFall, an endless runner kind of like Temple Run but its better, SkyLine Skaters and PacMan Dash. I liked Sonic Boom (Sonic Dash2) but I uninstalled it because sometimes the game would cut off while in the middle of play, especially when I was playing a special event.

I actually liked Sonic Runners when it came out, but then the load times having to play online and the money grabbing aspect put me off the game. Then seeing people being lucky or not lucky in getting Metal Sonic, Silver etc. The roulette was annoying too. Not being able to battle metal Sonic as a Boss. If they release another Sonic Runners the game should take away the roulette, have more stages, play the game in offline mode or like the other classic 2D Sonic.

One of my main problems with this game was that it was an online game so I could only play in my room, playing it anywhere else would just eat up my 4G. It also really annoyed me that It forced you to play a specific character instead of just letting me have a free run. Honestly the gameplay is great in my opinion but I feel like there's so much unnecessary things that they added that kinda ruins the experience

I was also glad to hear about all the positive feedback it got at first which made me think finally people can stop being so negative about Sonic. Another problem was that the game had to connect to the internet. A game that is somewhat a offline game, makes you connect to a Wi-Fi connection. Here's another one: Sometimes, the game would load up a screen. This screen said that you needed Wi-Fi connection to see if the game had a problem, and it would fix it. But sometimes, it would take SO LONG, that i think it could make you phone reach 0%. Your battery, reaching 0%. I think this happened after the shut down. The constant tutorials were something that i passed through so much. I played this game a lot, before it was shut down. So, yeah, i slowly stopped playing.

I actually LOVED the game, but that’s an understatement. I just got apart from it when they canceled the 1st and made the 2nd, and became paid, which I suppose got rid of the majority of the fans. The children. I couldn’t afford it, and I think that many others could agree.

The gameplay complexity is kind of a thing with endless runners in my opinion, but I say this as someone who has played multiple endless runners for several hours (including Sonic Dash 1). The controls are simple, but the obstacles get more and more complex and difficult as you keep going (until you die). What I'm trying to say is that the majority of endless runners are far less casual than a game like Valkyrie Crusade inherently. Imo there are some exceptions to this though, such as Temple Run which is a lot easier than endless runners like Pitfall HD. So in the end, I only really agree with points 2 and 3. Endless Runners are inherently quite complex and difficult gameplay wise. Though tutorials and story modes should be optional in my opinion.

What could explain the 2.0 update was that after sonic boom rise of lyric came out, Sega had to use mobile games as there form of many, so if the 2.0 update came out around sonic boom, that could explain it

One of the reasons why it could've failed was the game's difficulty. When I played Runners, I had to react superfast and focus very hard where I tap and what's in front of me. I don't think casual players want to play games to feel a rush and focus superhard on the game. They probably want to relieve stress and have fun.

This was a good video and you made some valid points in it especially with Sega being too greedy. While I'm not sure if taking away the story was a good idea but I do agree the roulette wheel system was broken. Even though later they put solid prices on the characters they were pretty absurd. Thankfully by the 2.0 update I eased off the game and didn't it play it enough to notice how screwed up it became. P.S. the stage type wasn't random, it was determined by the chapter or event. Still great video and great job analyzing the situation.

I played the Japanese version when it first came out on my iPod since it was jailbroken and I thought it was pretty fun. Later on it needed an update and since I used appcake to play it early I couldn't update. So I lost all of my progress and didn't feel like restarting. lol

I used to adore this game when first soft-launched. I even went out of my way to find a way to download it before it even launched worldwide/in tne States. And for a few months, yeah--I really enjoyed it as a game. Just having the main trio and going in was enough for me, especially when I just needed to kill time. But as more characters came out, along with 2.0, my interest just tanked. Wow, Shadow! Omega! Classic Sonic! I wanted to play as them, but as I realized that was damn near impossible, I just put the game down and ultimately never came back to it. All in all, the only thing I'll miss about Runners is its amazing soundtrack. The one thing I actually willingly spent money on.

Another possible contributing factor to Sonic Runners failure was the platform. Sega at the time was trying to go this "Mobile Phone Only" route which of course would probably cause many people to lose interest in the series. People at the time would have been so used to playing Sonic games on actual systems whether it be a handheld system like the 3-DS or a console system like the GameCube or Wii. I am not saying Sonic having mobile games like Sonic Dash is a bad thing if it is mixed with Sonic games that go on actual game systems as well however if the company just goes phone only people are naturally going to lose interest if they are console or handheld system gamers like myself. All I can say is thank goodness Project Sonic is going to be for the NX.

I agree with some of your points but I'm sure there's so called complicated games in the market that's gotten way more downloads than Runners. I agree though most of the stuff in this game was pointless, except like multiple gameplay styles, items, the good companions, level up system, and multiple zones. The need for internet to play, story mode, and timed mode were dumb. I miss this game though...

I'm sort of upset about the game going away, but the update did ruin everything about it. The core gameplay was the best that I've seen from a mobile Sonic game (ports don't count). It was way better than Dash could ever be, but the design behind unlocking characters and leveling them up was utter garbage. I remember feeling so bewildered that I couldn't just buy the characters I wanted. Runners would have been the ONLY mobile game I would ever make any in-app purchase for to get characters, but I didn't because of the gambling bullshit. Sonic Dash? Sonic Jump? Nah, I'm playing that garbage for free. Thanks a lot for sharing this video. I liked hearing your thoughts, and I agree with most of them. I'm pretty certain that this was what drove people away from the game.

The game failed due to negative press and reception. This was caused by lag, over heating phones, collision detection glitches, ect. It became unpopular to play due to always online drm. it made it hard to jump in quickly. The fan base was uninvolved due to character rarity and storyline. Not enough character were used in story and they were hard to get. This left the game with a bad reception, too slow to start, and no fan support = death and hopefully firing of Takao Hirabayashi

this is true. i stopped playing it after the SLOWEST loading screens and the fact that every single button in the game requires an active internet connection to load an that also takes a good amount of time. what i really liked about sonic dash is the fact that it works offline. i had some fun time with that app, but not with sonic runners. i mean sonic runners is a good casual game but everything is just so overcomplicated and slow...

What gets me very angry is that Sunic Runners feels like a classic Sonic game, despite all the mobile junk that came with it. The stages had so many things, power ups, different paths to choose. And with the servers shutting down all that goodness is simply gone. The game is over and we'll never be able to play it again. On the other hand, Sonic Jump and Sonic Dash, which are awfully repetitive an unoriginal, are up and running. Including a game that has Sonic Boom in the title. The rest of what Sega offers in mobile platform is overpriced relaunches. Sega could have made a great buy-to-play game with these graphics and mechanics. I'm still hoping someone might be able to mod this game in order to make it playable offline. One of the saddest things about this decade in gaming is AAA developers putting effort into oversaturated mobile formulas and casual gaming. While Sega prostitutes their mascot for a little over 100 million downloads, Subway Surfers is over 1 billion and Minion Rush 750 million.

The parts you call 'complicated' about the game actually appealed to me quite a bit, but I can understand why it worked against their attempt to appeal to the casual market. I think part of the reason Runners appealed and came off as so unique to me was the unusual amount of meat within the mechanics of the game, and while side scrolling endless runners are certainly nothing new, it helped make things very original. I stopped playing around the same time as you because the rankings got harder to break into and the incentives/rewards to placing high dried up as things favored those who spent more money on red rings, and I already spent more than I'd like to admit trying to unlock Tikal and Blaze. If this were to come to mobile or handheld or anywhere as an everything/everyone unlocked title for say, 7-10$, I'd seriously consider it, because it always seemed like too much effort and polish went into the game that a cheap mobile game should recieve.

I guess I'd fit into the casual gamer category. ty for the video explanation, I pretty much agree with everything except maybe having all character types just be the same. from a design point I think it's more interesting and fun when different character types (fly, power, speed) all have their own little quirks in game-play. when all the characters play exactly the same it feels a bit lazy to me and makes me think "why am I working to unlock these characters when all they are is aesthetic?". and while there's no difference aside from aesthetic with say cream and tails for example, at-least their perks were different. maybe the stages should have automatically changed depending on what characters we had equipped or let us change them ourselves. all in all I think there needs to be a balance of 'less is more' and 'interesting features' which can be pretty hard to hit the sweet spot for game developers which is a shame. ayee I really liked this game but understand why it came to an end. the new one (sonic runners adventure)? just... visually speaking the character models aren't as appealing, the running animations feel slow, just less 'consistent polish'. also generally liked being able to run endlessly rather than the level ending. this is all not to say that the new one is bad, but. not my preferred cup of tea as much. anywho sorry for the long comment haha
