Yes encourage Mohamed to speak to your child from the day they are babies only in Arabic. English is very easy to grasp. A lot of parents wait until there kids get older to speak Arabic. My husband and I speak 90% of time to each English, 10% Arabic. But with our daughter we only spoke Arabic to her, including her aunts and grandparents that knew Arabic spoke only Arabic to her. And now she’s almost three and fluent in Arabic and English. Bilingual.

What a beautiful goal Amanda Mashallah. one tip I would give you to turn on the Quran with someone reading it and try to imitate the person that reading the Quran and repeat after him, i used to do this when I was a little, and that's how I learned how to read Quran in Arabic ❤❤

The method you're referring to is called OPOL (one parent, one language) and the way you described it is exactly correct. This is what we do with my daughter, and it does take a lot of work for the parent in the non dominant language, but it's amazing to see and hear them learn to code switch between languages! The parent speaking the non-dominant language has to be really strict about it though, if my daughter speaks to my partner in English, he just replies, "I don't understand" in his language to make her say it again.

Salam aleyki beautiful! To pick up on learning to read Arabic, I did it last year and honestly within 2 months of learning a bit everyday I was able to read Arabic! It was a STRUGGLE, by no means I was reading fluently like I would in French or English but it was still reading. It's so useful specially when you try to learn the Quran because phonetic is not like learning it from the actual letters. I hope it will give you motivation to start taking classes, I know you can do it Amanda! 💘
@ruthiiann
@ruthiiann 6 ай бұрын
The method you’re talking about is OPOL (One Language One Parent) Bilingual method. The children associate one language with one parent thus developing simultaneous bilingualism as they grow up. My husband and I will be doing that with our children inshallah. I speak Spanish and English. My husband speaks Darija (Moroccan Arabic Dialect), fusha Arabic, and English. So I’ll be the Spanish parent and he’ll be the Arabic parent, lol. As Mohammed said you really have to be strict with the language in their early developing years I’d say 0-5 because once they’re introduced English in school and the world they’ll get comfortable with just English but by then they already know two other languages( or in your case one more). Wishing you all the best in your journey in the future, inshallah. 💖

Hey Amanda - one BIG thing cause of needing to take extra melatonin to fall asleep is your body's natural rhythm not realizing it's bedtime. It's super important to turn off heavy lighting and electronics at least an hour or two before bed so your body can slowly relax and realize its time for bed! Otherwise our brains are constantly in action and processing information - and you can imagine just pumping more melatonin does not help the root cause. A little insight I learned from this book which I 100% recommend reading called Stolen Focus by Johann Hari!

I learned how to read and write in Arabic after I converted at 16 Hamdilla I transferred to an Islamic high school and learned the first year there. I’ve always kept up with it I guess unintentionally just by reading Quran or posts on social media. Sure, my reading and writing is slow and since I’m not fluent in the language the pronunciation is butchered but the more vocabulary you learn, the more smooth it’ll become. I’ve lived in Jordan the past 11 months with my kids, I enrolled them in an Arabi private school and it’s increased their Arabic tremendously. We’re going back to the US in the summer and my husband will keep up with their Arabic. And they’ll be old enough for Sunday school at the Masjid, I’ll help them remember the words and use them but my husband will be responsible for correcting all of our pronunciations/accents/grammar. Oh also if it’s available I make my kids watch their shows in Arabic 😊 such as Omar and Hana on KZbin. Captain Majed (it’s a soccer show my husband grew up with) Even Netflix can offer a few shows in Arabic. And when we were in Jordan last time we bought a idk what it’s called it’s like a monitor for TV shows so we have access to all Arabic shows in the US too. If you want to keep up with your Arabic for yourself or your kids you can you just have to do it and don’t wait until they’re old

Hi, just a thought. With my first daughter, I would speak to her in Spanish and my husband would speak to her in French. It delayed her to the point where she needed speech therapy. I was told the issue wasn't the multiple languages, but that she would hear her dad and me speak English with each other and that is what truly threw her off. She speaks English and is learning Spanish in school. Next up will be French.
@21972012145525

Imo Speech therapy isn't a problem though imo. It's just another set of hands to teach the child (if resources allow obv). I feel like english should be the last to be learned as it's obv they will learn in school and/or just learn by watching kids shows.

16:03 the method you are talking about is one parent one language. The other common method is called minority language at home where you would be speaking only Arabic and then they speak English outside of the home. One of the main issues with one parent one language is they will end up understanding the language not spoken outside but not necessarily being willing or able to speak. This is because they hear it regularly but not in conversation form. If both parents are not fluent in one of the languages I recommend having that as the primary language for any screen time they are allowed to have. So they can see how conversations play out in that language on a regular basis. Aside from that you might want to consider literacy. With either method sometimes the child will have the verbal and listening skills but not reading or the more formal grammar that comes with the written form of the language versus colloquial / conversational. But if you are considering the one parent one language, make it a point to regularly have them exposed to conversation in that language.

If you speak English with your child and your husband speaks Arabic or any other language your child will speak English with you and arabic with his or her dad . That’s an amazing experience of mine. And believe me that bilingual kids are much smarter than other kids

Amanda I run an institute from the Uk and we run step by step lessons once a week to help students to learn to read arabic. Small group classes, women only. Live interactive sessions. Would love to have you a part of our classes.
