I've been enjoying cruising around the top of the south island in my wharram pahi 31 catamaran, but it's coming time to head off on a bigger trip. I've been slowly making improvements, over the winter, but now that the time to leave is coming up, there are lots of little things to do!
Finishing the doghouses,
Installing seals,
Hatch Latches,
Running backstays,
New tillers,
Tighten lashings,
Fix masthead light,
Build a Self Steering mechanism...
Filmed at various locations around Nelson, Motueka, and Able Tasman National Park

Good idea to fit the running back stays. Makes it so much safer if you can lay off the boom to 90 deg in a gust. It would be better if you could set the rear stays off the stern, even with a bobkin, that would give security if the running stay comes lose (My cat only has three stays…not good!)

This one has pretty more stays than really necessary. Not just inner stays, but also a diamond stay. And because the mast rakes back, but the side stays go straight down, they have some back stay effect too. Currently the rear stay goes to a bridle on the aft netting beam. Not sure what you mean off the stern with a bobkin? I am considering switching to double back stays, one to stern of each hull. Could put chainplates in the rudder wells and it would clear the boom. That would go from 3 lashings to 2, and no longer depend on the netting beam. also clear space for solar panels etc. What sort of cat do you have?

Nothing better than experiencing raw nature in relative comfort. Nice work on the dog houses. Looking forward to seeing your proa dinghy rack.

haha yeah I was thinking that on the trip. Solo sailing is an extreme sport where you are mostly lying in bed reading a book!

I would put a breakwater at the location of the dog house when slid forward. It won’t stop everything, but will stop green water hitting the front seal.

hmm, I think if the hatch is open and green water, as in solid water, not just a splash, comes over the deck and hits it I'll have much bigger problems! If it's rough enough that much water is coming on deck I'll definitely have it closed, and then there is a 600mm gap from where the deflector would be. I am thinking about deflectors/walls around the other hatches though, especially the foredeck hatches. It would also stop some wear on their edges too.

thanks! this boat has hatches on hatches! on my first big trip I got a lot of water down below. Bed etc got wet, and also the foredeck hatches _completely_ filled. not good!

@@dominictarrsailing I know all about leaky hatches... The bigger the seas the more they leak... On boats, it seems all leaks end up on beds! On our Mono all was good up to F7s, yet once that hit us leaks would show up all over the place... I'm thinking of going round my hatches on the HAVAYA with alu angle bars screwed and caulked to deck, then under the covers stick some of your foam stuff, that will come down onto the coamings. On WHY NOT? in a big sea I filled his bow in no time, all leaked in though the front hatch, crashing into moving water can become an issue if one is unprepared....

the ocean will find a way! and it will think of things you didn't! On my mono, I replaced the windows, forgot one screw. regular heavy sailing maybe a few drips came in, just forgot about it. Then I went on a voyage and sailed through a gale. It dripped under the bed and wet the squabs from the bottom up, into the locker where I kept my clothes, and enough water into the bilge that it came over the floorboards when heeled! I was very happy to discover I had put a couple of tshirts in a plastic bag! I think the alu angle is a good idea. You need multiple lines of defense. The hatch it self, that's your castle, the rubber seal is the archers on the walls, and the angle is like a moat, slows the water down so that less water gets a chance at the seal! don't forget some limber holes so that any extra water can run out instead of accumulating and piling over your castle walls!

I Hope you are using tinned cable for your wiring. I am currently having to replace the original domestic cable which is badly corroded
@dominictarrsailing
@dominictarrsailing Жыл бұрын
yup the nav lights wires are tinned! but there is some other stuff onboard that isn't, was mostly working in remote places and just had to use what I had. Fortunately there is currently very little wiring on the boat so not much to re-do!

I know that no amount of amount of money could pay for all of your hours building your Wharram, but have you ever calculated the cost of the materials? Was planning to purchase a mono haul but I keep coming back to Wharram catamarans as the best choice because I want to spend a lot of time near shallow reefs & would rather have my “house” with me than anchor a mono haul at a distance & climb in & out of a dinghy in the Keys & Bahamas.

Well, I sort of did but I don't like to think about it! Since I did a restoration,kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJCbZJysdp1qnNk I didn't actually spend that much money on materials, massively less than a new build. I only needed a few sheets of plywood. spent less than $1000, but probably $1000 went on epoxy. paint was ~1500 (there is a video breaking down the cost of paint) Quite a bit on tools and consumables like sandpaper and paint rollers are surprisingly expensive. There are a lot of small and medium costs that really add up. I think the project was 10-15k at launch, plus 5k to buy boat, including rent of the work space (all prices NZD) No regrets though! Still cheaper than paying rent! It's nearly a year since I launched.

The project I received was a partially completed refit, that had been sitting 20 years. I had to patch a lot of rot, and I repainted the entire thing, which was actually the hardest part.

it's hard to beat a second hand production mono for price, but it's not very suitable for cruising, except between marinas, and I meet a lot more people with my bright yellow cat parked on a beach than I ever did with my mono!
