Yes, my little city of Elizabethton was hit by the hurricane and we have a major state bridge in town that isn’t usable and won’t be for many more months and some businesses still aren’t back up and running. Even the drivers license building was flooded and they had a mobile unit brought in but they just now moved into the city hall building to make it somewhat easier on people.

For folks with a green house, chicken coop etc. my friend’s dad grew up in the Ukraine countryside. He used to ( here in Canada) put big rocks in the fire during the day. At night he would roll them out onto a thick piece of leather with holes on the ends and carry them into the greenhouse for slow release heat. He also said in the old days they would cook potatoes in the fire or on the woodstove and carry them in their pockets for heat. Then eat them for lunch🥳

I live alone and my "pets" are inside. However I just recently fixed my garage so a few feral kitties can get in there, feeding them daily, sacrificed an old rice cooker to give them a supply of water that won't freeze. There is straw in their beds - one of them has an pad that is covered with an old blanket that will keep at least one warm. Bought and installed a cat house that will hold 2 or 3 with a cushion that their body heat warms - and then there is an old mattress pad on top for more insulation and sleeping area. There is a woodstove in the garage -- that if it gets down to sub zero- I will light to give them some warmth. I am well stocked in the house with several heat sources, extra water - about 6 months of food - propane cookstove. Loss of electric would not be good but I do have some solar lights - - I'm 77 but I think I could manage for a week - will super clean extra bathtub and store 1/2 a tub of water to flush if need be as I'm on a well.

We're in Texas and are hearing about ice/snow possibly. Folks are not equipped with snowtires, chains... there's no snowplows, so driving becomes a really dangerous venture when that happens. Wouldn't you know it, we have medical appointments in two different neighboring towns the very days that are being warned about. We are elderly and ice and wet are not our friends. So we may just have to reschedule. Meanwhile our wood stove is on the ready and we've plenty of seasoned wood. We have an alternate water supply so don't have to depend upon our well alone. I've got several freezers, but I line the bottom of each with jugs of ice, so if we lose power they'll stay cold a good while. We have a never used generator and cans of gasoline just in case. The propane and butane bottles are full, and that gives us another source for cooking in our all electric house. I think we are good to go. You and youtubers like you are who got me preparing for such as this a few years ago. Thanks for the heads up through the years. God bless.
@feelingblueinny3 күн бұрын
I live in upstate NY and we are always prepared for cold weather. Gas in the generator, extra gas on hand, freezer is full, 13 gallons of distilled water on hand, have a hand pump on well but just in case, Extra blankets, fleece lined pants, wool socks and mittens, extra mittens, wool and fleece hats, plastic to cover doors ( do that every winter anyways), make sure gas tanks in vehicles are full. Refill medications if you can. Plenty of food in the pantry. Microspikes or yak tracts for your shoes... So awesome when you have ice.. I don't have any animals other than a dog but that's what we do to prepare for winter.

Me and hubby did our run yesterday - plugging holes in preps. We got home and realized we forgot to fill the car with gas, get insulation for the dots and windows that need it - but we did get an insulated curtain hung over our slider door and an insulated cover for the fireplace doors - huge place for drafts and heat loss. This morning is our gas fill up, Home Depot stop and then home to chop wood and do some meal canning. (Jars on the counter with meals-reduces cooking needs later). We're 77 and 79.

Ahh, Chicago. I was living there during the blizzard of 1967. The funny thing is that while the radio reports were treating it as a crisis, which I'm sure it was for some of the residents, many of us were enjoying the quiet peace of a winter wonderland. It was beautiful. Most people were equipped for extreme cold because, as you know, if you live in Chicago you'd better be prepared for freezing weather even without a major blizzard!

If you get stranded or go off the road, help may not be able to get to you immediately, regardless of having a cell phone. I've found for chickens a heated waterer works great overnight in keeping the water from freezing. I actually use it all year but only plug it in during freezing temps. It's been very reliable for that. Deep litter method for me with covered coop but they usually hang out in the roosting bars. Oh and a researched product for their combs and waddles in those temps is "musher's secret dog paw wax". It's kept them from frostbite. Better than Vaseline I've heard. Stay warm but frosty 😊

I have been through 2 day blizzards. Get your ladder up against the house so you can get on your roof. You don’t want to crush the eaves troughs so if you have stand-offs for the ladder that’s better. Get a roof rake if you can. It’ll be a 3 piece pole with about a 3 foot scoop at one end. Depending on how much snow you get you need to get that snow load off that roof as fast as possible. With a roof rake you don’t need a ladder. Don’t let it get over 3 feet. I have been on roofs with snow up to my waist. Don’t wait. You don’t want a collapse of your roof. Last year in California roofs collapsed during storms.

Doctors are limited on the amount of narcotics they can prescribe but there are other pain meds they can prescribe that can be taken alternately so he always has some on board. Get over the counter meds too. Oh and don’t forget, he WILL get constipated from anesthesia, lack of movement and narcotics so get him on a stool softener right out of surgery, have stool softener and laxatives on hand at home and pay attention to bowel movements. I’m sure you’ve done it but the nurse in me wants to remind you to make sure you have enough pain medication for him so you don’t have to go out in the storm. Often people don’t realize they haven’t went until it’s been 3-4 days and then they are in a bad place. I see it all the time !!! Have winter gear and a survival pack in your vehicle !! Blessings

The sound was much better this time. And I can sure see a much clearer and vivid picture quality! Thanks for the heads up on a cold front. I’ve been sick the past week and haven’t been paying attention. I hope to get out soon and get some shopping done. Just need to get more strength back. No honeybun or family here for me. If I don’t get it done, it’s not done at all.

Praying for you and your homestead as you face the coming weather - no matter how prepared you are, that's still tough to go through! We're looking at a predicted major ice storm here in the Ozark Mountains in Southern Missouri - ugh! We're well prepared but making sure everything is topped off and the firewood is stacked in the dry. Stay safe!

A bag of ice melt for my steps and sidewalks. I slipped on the ice several years ago and fell and hit my head HARD on the corner of the house. I was on my way out to the shop to get the chicken and cat feed for our critters. I bring the bag to my back porch as soon as it starts getting cold. Lesson learned.

🔹If you are an elderly single person you may want to consider having your pipes professionally drained and staying with a friend or relative. There is a lot of work involved when cold weather hits. 🔹Be very careful of carbon monoxide poisoning and house fires with alternative heat sources. 🔹Livestock tips: smaller bucket inside of a larger bucket with straw in between for insulation to allow a longer time before water freezing. Clear poly sheeting or greenhouse plastic to cover pens or doorways for livestock especially on the south facing openings will do two things. Cut down the windchill and let the sun heat the space during the day. PLEASE ALLOW FOR FRESH AIR TO STILL FLOW THROUGH AND MONITOR TEMPERATURES. Livestock will stay much warmer if dry vs. wet. Dry bedding and keep them eating. The cold requires a higher caloric intake. Bring them babies inside if possible. Saying a prayer for everyone from the cold state of North Dakota.

My husband and I live in rural Oregon on our son's 6 acres. A river runs through the property. It's wonderful for swimming from late spring through summer, but it turns into a raging torrent during the winter rains. (Fortunately the dwellings are high above the river.) It is so soggy here from relentless rain that our chief concern is uprooted trees during high winds. After several trees came down causing damage over the last couple of years we hired a crew to take out several that threatened the structures. 💸😬 We had to prep in the summer far in advance of the rainy season. A small, clean winter stream runs nearby, so we have water available for emergencies, including keeping our Berkey filled. Last year an ice storm took out the power for a week and a half. We should have been prepared, but our son had neglected to fill the propane tanks, his generator was being repaired, our generator stopped working after a couple of days, and the only ones left were the solar ones which are great since you can use them inside, but they only last a couple days before running down. A lesson in understanding the difference between THINKING you are prepared and actually BEING prepared! (We were all fine, though, with a fireplace providing warmth.)

I'm 68 and live in the Sandhills of North Carolina. The weather forecast for my area in the coming days will be lows in the 20's and highs in the 40's and 50's. I'm prepared as best as I can. I have food that I don't have to cook, plenty of bottled water in case the pipes freeze or bust, I have plenty of blankets, socks, mittens, head coverings in case the electric goes out. Candles under a clay pot puts out an amazing amount of heat in a small area. I got black trash bags to use in case the toilet plumbing goes out. I have hobbies to keep me busy when the electric goes out. My phone charging system and computer charging system is top notch. So, Old Man Winter, bring it on. Stay safe and warm everybody.

I just ordered a couple days ago some Berne insulated bibs. (Work bibs. Like carhartts. These are just a better value and better features on the bibs) should be here Thursday. I didn’t order them just for the weather but for some work and chores I’m gonna jump on an not wait till spring. Also don’t forget to put some battery tenders on any equipment you have have sitting around in the shop or barn. I’ve been really debating just getting and electric water warmer for the chickens. Haven’t decided on that yet. Our propane grill needs replacing as it’s just worn out. So we’re going to academy sports tomorrow to get one. Plus I have a gift card for there. Nothing fancy just a plane ole propane three burner grill. Got some propane tanks to swap and or get refilled. Might pick up another. We like them cause they keep and our generator can run on propane and or gas. But the propane is easy to keep since it doesn’t go bad like gas. We keep both on hand though and rotate the gas. Need to get some more diesel for the tractor. Oh also the little single burner stove that takes the butane fuel cans little camp stove that patara shared on her Facebook page those are great. We have one of those as well that we use when camping with the kids. Another good thing to have is some hot hand packets.

Have a way to heat water. As crazy as it sounds, candles can be used. Use a baking pan with bricks and a cooling rack on top of the bricks. This water can be used for hot drinks or to fill hot water bottles. If the power is out, wrapping up and putting your feet on a hot water bottle will warm your whole body. Also, hand warmers, foot warmers, and medical therma care heat pads can warm you up if the power is out. Make sure to have flashlights and lots of batteries. The flashlights that are worn on your head are great because you have both hands free. Hang blankets over windows to keep drafts out.

A few suggestions of what to keep on hand: God Food, water, layerable clothing, good gloves & footwear, blankets Meds - otc & prescription Food supplements - vitamins, protein bars &/or shakes Weather radio At least 1 alternate power source, fresh batteries, adapter/charging cables & plugs Alternate heat sources Fuel up vehicles - can be an alternate source of heat, shelter, &/or power if needed; if this is a possibility, also have a minimum of 2 cans of fuel per car and 3 per truck/suv Shovel - yes, keep it in the house by the door Multiple ways to communicate with family & friends Hope these help. If you know someone in assisted living, ensure their location is also prepared.

I was born and lived in the Deep South until 2017. I live in South Dakota now, so am very used to negative temps, lots of snow, and even blizzards. I love it! I always hated the heat and humidity in the south. I have plenty of faux fur coats, lots of blankets, and stay snug as a bug in a rug. My heart does go out to the people who are not used to such cold weather, especially to the people who are still misplaced, living in tents, and other shelters not equipped for cold weather. Oh, don’t forget extra thick, warm socks! I will be praying for all.🙏🙏🙏🙏

I'm so thankful you did this video. I watched a video on what might be headed our way, and i started praying for those living in tents. I called a friend who made a large order for delivery from Walmart that arrived today. She doesn't drive, and the bus is 3 blocks away. I made 1 grocery store run, only spent $20, and am going to check our shelves again, maybe making another run tomorrow before the weather turns. Possible ice storms scare me. We had an automatic NG generator installed 2 years ago, so we will be good, but neighbors might be in trouble. Blessings to all.

It is warmer than warm, and I have wool socks and good boots. Even if I lose power, God forbid, I have backups. As far as preps I have everything I need for me for the next 6 months and for the pets a good month. But thanks Patara for bringing this up. Some people lose track and if you need something now is the time. Just remembered more water. Will pick that up tomorrow!
