My wife and I am putting all our efforts into food prepping, we do without new clothing, eating out etc , our car is 20 years old, after its MOT we deal with any advisories and this year we changed the cam belt and last year had the cooling system flushed, prevention is cheaper then cure. Every penny spent on prepping is an insurance, you can not eat money.

One of the first things I did to cut down on my food bill was to buy the cheaper brands, and as you say, they are disappearing before our eyes. In addition, shrinkflation is a major problem - we are paying far more for far less. I seems like the supermarkets are trying to be a step ahead of us. When you think of how little salaries have increased compared to the price of food - just ridiculous.

Buy in bulk, shop online, learn to bake your own bread. Pasta has “forever” shelf life. Corned beef is a great source of proteins when fresh meat is not available. Invest in a freezer where you can store bacon, meat, sausages when you buy them at a discount price. Stay safe people.

There are already too many who are struggling with food price inflation. Im also freezing more, particularly meat. It might be worthwhile collecting jars (and new lids for them) from friends and family, especially the pasta sauce jars, for future preserving projects.

Hubby went to our local store for some butter £2.80 for 1 pack. ! Dozy begger never checks prices, I could have slapped him! 😆I stocked up on olive oil and I’ve not bought any for nearly 2 years. I’ve also converted to cooking coconut oil (no taste or smell) for those who do t like coconut. It was£5 for a 1kg tub not sure how much it is now. I’ve also been going back to the old days and using lard. However I confess I still prefer butter to fry my veg. Thanks for the heads up on cocoa powder, I forgot about that for making shelf stable hot chocolate drink.

Ah, great minds think alike, lol. I've recently started concentrating on freezing too, putting home-made soups, casseroles and baked goods into me-sized portions along with meat, fish and veggies. And still buying lots of tinned goods for storage. Thank you for the inflation information, Ana. It's very useful. :)

It's the combination of price up, size down: shrink-flation is now getting beyond a joke! Silly example, but my daughter likes the Natural brand Wiggly worms sweets as a treat - I think many have slithered out of the packet before they get put on the shelf! Snack sized items are now more like "1 bite" sized items!

One sneaky thing I've noticed is with 'price matching' (normally with aldi/lidl) - where the big 5 supermarket finds a product they are currently selling cheaper than aldi, for example, then increase that price and slap a 'price match' label on the new, more expensive item ! Technically not a lie but really underhanded tactics.

🫒I give a wry smile to the reports coming out of Italy with regards to this seasons olive oil production. They touch briefly on the climatic challenges faced this year, as they cannot be hidden. But slick marketing in an effort to stabilise the business as a whole, is being created by a new interest in a region previously not considered. Without any previous years to call upon, middlemen want you to take a leap of faith in just a projected description. A crop failure is a crop failure, no matter how much spin you put upon it.🕊️
