When the weather starts to cool down it's easy to want to try to keep extending the summer growing season. But at the end of the summer season It’s time to transition from your summer garden to fall and winter gardening!
There are only a few things you need to do to prepare your garden bed for fall gardening. Being sure to properly prepare your garden will ensure more success when planting a fall garden.
Remove any shade cloth or shade covering from your garden. You plants will need full sun to be able to grow well in the fall and into the winter. Be sure to properly store the shade cloth to prevent damage so that it can be used again next summer.
Remove summer plants from the garden. You can pull them up, or cut them off at ground level to leave the roots in the soil. They will break down and provide organic matter for the soil and occasionally you may get what is called a volunteer plant in the spring when one from last year regrows.
Pull the weeds from the garden. Make sure you are pulling them up from the roots to help prevent regrowth. There are differing opinions on whether you should put weeds into your compost. I typically will put the weeds that are not thorny into the compost. The seeds should be made unviable during the composting process. Thorny weeds however, will go into the trash.
Clear all debris from in and around the garden. This includes, leaves, branches, scrap wood, broken tools, etc. This is especially important if you had any pests, such as squash bugs in your garden as they can overwinter (survive the fall and winter) by living in this debris and then you will have the same problems with them again next spring. All organic debris, like leaves, can go into your compost.
Add an organic fertilizer or compost to your garden and till into the soil. Be sure to follow the directions on your fertilizer and water well after applying.
Check your drip irrigation for damage and make any repairs needed. Things to look for are cracked or broken drip lines and broken or clogged emitters.
Once you have your garden prepared for fall planting, you should water the soil thoroughly before planting your plants.
Taking time to properly prepare your garden for fall gardening will allow more and much more productive and enjoyable fall gardening experience and will set you up for more success in your spring garden next year.
