With winter comes snow, ice, and dangerously low temperatures. It can take as few as 10 minutes for hypothermia to set in if the conditions are extreme enough. I like it when the charity organizations, like WWF , send you a nice fleece blanket (Lisa's favourite thing) or something useful if you send a donation, and I only had to buy a few special things to finish the kit. Otherwise, the advice is fair for LONG trips away from improved areas: Use a commercial battery tester(visit your local auto repair) instead of a voltmeter; chains for snow-covered roads ONLY; a sturdy 30 FOOT tow strap; a telescoping shovel; some extra clothes or a blanket; some extra (or emergency flasher) lamps ( take indoors when not driving, because batteries freeze); the booster battery; snacks (my favourite when waiting for roads to open); some warm or work gloves; hand warmers; an extra wiper blade (or both if they are different). And it all but the blankets will fit into a small gym bag, so you can bring it indoors when you aren't driving. I'm cleaning out the trunk on my car today ( the first snow) and putting the winter stuff in.

You've got a pretty comprehensive list there mate. The only things I'd add is actually being a competent driver and learning to maintain your vehicle. I was walking my dog last summer and this woman was about to call recovery as she'd managed to get it stuck on the muddy verge. She just kept revving it, spinning the wheels and digging herself in. I bounced it out on the clutch and she was on her way in 2 mins.
