I remember in 1984 when I was a junior in HS we had this weekly presentation where we had to present a short news bulletin of our choice in History class. This one day I presented the update that the military was replacing the Colt .45/1911 with the Berreta. My teacher Mr. Carter, a World War II vet, was outraged at hearing this. "WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE COLT .45?" I sheepishly parroted the articles's reference to improved ballistics of the Berretta. That simply drew a glare of displeasure from Mr. Carter...I'm like, don't shoot the messenger man!!

The safety I love it being that close. In a fire fight it makes it very simple to drop the mag, reload and get back in the fight without having to drop the slide then the safety. This design makes it all one move and back in the fight.

The slide release\safety proximity issue can be resolved with practicing the slingshot slide release method over using the manual slide release. Still a minor issue but better performance through training. i.e. manual of arms.
@PreparedAirman2 жыл бұрын
In real world use yes you can use the slingshot method but this requires training and that specific methods is not used or authorized in Military use. Everyday thousands of soldiers, Airman sailors and other DOD members armup with their m18/M17 and Required to use the slide stop/slide release.. hence the issue.

Mine is a truck gun, so I don't care about the safety switch issue you mentioned. I can say that I thoroughly enjoy a SIG SAUER product in 9mm that has full-sized capacity with a manual safety. The added reassurance of a safety is something that I prefer and require. As many people say "you can never be too safe", which I jive with. Great video!
@Dan-di9jd3 жыл бұрын
Personally I think any behavior where you're manipulating the safety during a slide release is dangerous. One of the biggest issue with the m9 is during a slide pull loading, you can engage the safety and thereby potentially finding the weapon will not fire until you release the safety. On the M17, I feel they solved this issue. I also feel like the point where you release the slide and disengage the safety, that is a design intention to avoid accidentally having the safety on during an actual fire fight. The P320 was never meant to have a safety but was a design requirements. On the beretta, a lot of folks would disengage the safety and simply carry it in double action. I also feel a lot of the special forces are used to glock type weapons without the safety so these guys would know how to carry the weapon properly. But I find for myself I am having trouble making sure the safety is off because it's a polymer pistol and I'm so used to not having a safety.
@timrobinson6573 Жыл бұрын
Beretta has the D version of the 92 that does not go into safety mode. The lever is only a decocker and then springs back automatically into fire. Eliminates the issue you brought up.

Older ones were originally 2 dot or U shape. Beretta wanted to cut cost so instead of making 2 separate manufacturing lines they merged them together. All the newer variants or "replacement" slides have 3 dot sights. Including military ones. The 2 dots variants wernt really common just before the m18 due to replacement of old parts. The answer to that question is NO. The Sig Sauer P226 beat the M18 on the testing. But it's more expensive to produce. So it all came down to cost. By the way Marines also uses M17s. They have both 17s and 18s. There's a couple of good videos here of Marines qualifying with M17s. About the safety issue the original M17/M18 (P320) was originally designed without the safety. That was a US military requirement. So I don't use the safety on my 3 pistols. There, problem solved! 😆 I got stovepipes with all 3 of my Sigs. However after 200 rounds that issue disappeared.

A handgun is a secondary weapon almost entirely expected to be defensive thus the weight/size saving benefit of the M18 outweighs all other benefits of the m17. Its 100% reasonable when you have to carry one on your hip for 16 hours a day. After all, aside from SF/MPs, most troops won't be carrying a sidearm, its reserved mainly for officers/SNCOs. This is why special operation career fields almost always carry the Glock 19, it is smaller, reliable, and lighter than all the handguns shown in the video. The FNX-45 would have been a pain in the ass for everyone. Its too big and heavy.

The army is officially changing the pistol tactics with the adoption of the m17.. no longer is it a defense, secondary weapon.... they are being used and applied as cqb offensive weapons and will be issued to 3x as many soldiers as the m9 was.... it is part of the reason they choose the m17 over the m18.... just like stated in the video, he isn't the only one that shoots the 17 better. Carrying what's essentially a single-action pistol on fire, rather than having it cocked and locked, seems a little nonsensical to me, especially if someone naturally drops the safety on the draw. Then again, I'm not military, so I can't really judge the decision to make that a thing.
@DaveSmith-cp5kj3 жыл бұрын
Same. I would go even further and say manual safeties on handguns are absolutely pointless. Safeties on long arms are important because there are many times you have to sling your gun to free up hands, but can't simply unload the chamber each time you do so. With a handgun we have a holster, which prevents any free hanging trigger or floppy muzzle control loss. The manual safety becomes pointless as a result. The military uses it as a training aid (if someone forgets to manipulate the safety, it is a red flag they aren't following other procedures) but IMO the value is minimal compared to just enforcing normal discipline in training.

@@heaterfamily Well there are a couple of issues with your assumption. NYPD used a revolver up until the Glock replaced it. The problem is many of the old timers were used to the revolver DA pull so with the glocks, they're finding they found the trigger too light. So they upgraded them to a heavier spring. As far as I know NYPD is the only department that had they "NY Spring" upgrade. As far as the AD situations during the 80s and 90s with glocks, the problem is during training events with new PDs, they'd have at least one person per class take it back to their room and do what they're trained to do: pull the trigger, and put the slide half way. The problem is no one bothered to tell them to make sure the weapon was unloaded before doing that. At the time, people weren't used to "pulling the trigger" to dissassemble the weapon as many of them used the revolver type weapon. Most PDs before the 80s/90s/early 00s had a revolver type sidearms. I don't think any PD today has a revolver type firearm but at the time, none of them were used to the system. Remember, many of these cops don't own personal firearms and many of them just use whatever the department gave them. Point is the safety had nothing to do with the ADs, except they were improperly trained.

M 18 is an excellent pistol especially if you're used to Glocks.

My Sig M18 is such a sweet shooter hardly any recoil and perfectly balanced. Beautiful, reliable and accurate what more can u want. I am so happy with my purchase.

I have one too love it feels kinda like a toy with the plastic but still amazing quality for the most part
@bigbossoooo3 жыл бұрын
@@scott67nova I am not sure if your used to full metal handguns why it feels like a toy. I just put some talon grips ( moss colored) on my m18. Going to the range to see how it works. I also agree with the quality I have had mine for 7 months now with no issues and just over 800 rounds on it with no malfunctions what so ever.

The M18 isn't as reliable as I thought it would be, it's super picky about ammo. I'm not the only one, even KZbin gun channels like TheHonestOutlaw and 1911Syndicate had issues with the M18. Also in the MAC Gauntlet torture test the P320 didn't survive the run. Not to mention all the drop safety issues and accidental discharges the P320 platform has been having even just last year. In one incident a man's wife was fatally wounded by their P320, that case is still ongoing. The only Sig I trust with my life is my P226 made in West Germany, I don't trust these fake Sigs coming out of New Hampshire.

M-18 accuracy is terrible. Find the spot you want to hit and then move the sights up and to the right.

My personal opinion the Beretta 92fs is the best, but that's the one pistol I have the most experience with, problems with Sig Sauer pistols are as common as the sunrise I personally would never trust the P320 or any variant of the P320 line too many problems on the past, Beretta all the way for me

I have an M17 and would gladly carry it for a SHTF situation, just because it has so many pros, for me personally. 21 round mags standard(mine came with 2 21, 1 17), plus when you buy the Wilson combat frame it’s a game changer

Typical military… if SOP is to place the thumb safety to the fire position when you holster the weapon, why have a thumb safety at all? (Btw, I do miss my issue M1911A1)

Not sure you would even feel your hand in order to shoot in -50F with a sweaty or wet hand. I'm no expert but your likely to get severe frostbite in my opinion.

The Military is out in temps like that evey year. We have mittens that will work but you cant use them while shooting.

@@PreparedAirman I used to be in FT. Drum used to get -15ish at times our mittens had at that time (2006) trigger finger seperate from rest of mittens in order to shoot but you have a good point. Not trying to hate just saying I'm sure guys do it, just wouldn't recommend.

I would roll with the glock or the m18. The glock I am used to and the m18 because in my opinion the m18 has a better feel in my hand I like the sight and just the way it points when you go to shoot. Only thing i would have to be worried about is that sig never fixed the issue with the gun going off in the holster so either don't have one in the pipe or make dam shure you got that safety on. My m18 is different then yours mine is not tan mine is all black.
