Good stories of very introspective and proactive folks! Your story about hot water for bathing during a power outage reminds me of our weekly Saturday night bath as kids. We had an ancient water heater that barely worked so it was pots of water into the tub that my sibling and I shared. Three inches deep was all we got but it was enough!

I love hearing these testimonies. We're in a subdivision where we are 100% dependent on public utilities. We try to prepare for emergencies, but it's difficult to know how much to plan for. These stories remind us that emergencies come in all shapes and forms.

Thank you! I grew up without indoor plumbing & coal stoves. We were poor but we never “felt” poor. I can do without modern luxuries & I’m a very frugal, low maintenance person. I save change & dollar bills to pay for extra stuff or for emergency repairs. We are both retired now, debt free & live comfortably on less than $3000 a month in an expensive highly taxed state (Illinois) it can be done

My 12yo loves to make rice or noodles mixed with a homemade roux with milk or water/broth, canned meat of some kind, and veggies for lunch. She's not afraid to use seasonings and goes very light on salt. She's so much further than most her age.

I have cats so I take the litter containers and fill them with water and it sits under our bed our bed is high so it does not freeze and that is what we use to flush the toilet with I have about 20 and I get at least two flushes out of one. And under the other bed we have our water supply. Enough for about three weeks. And under the third bed we have the extra water .I have never liked to put things under my bed because it gets dirty but I don’t mind water.

I love those buckets that litter comes in. We also use them to catch the water in the shower while it's getting hot to water plants.

Always hard to hear heartbreaking stories like the first lady. As a widow myself so sorry for your loss. And then there is the flip side had it not been for the camper that protected her husband it could've been horrible out come. Yes, God is good, ALL the time! Sherry

If you are on a septic system with an electric pump, be frugal flushing the toilet when the power is out. It doesn't take but a few flushes with no power pumping it elsewhere that it will fill up. If it is yellow let it mellow, if it is brown flush it down. Of course, ours has to have electricity to pump it up hill, to the road, a ways to the corner, turning onto another road and to the field.
@sandrad5189 сағат бұрын
My septic is all downhill from the house, thank goodness, but we'll still let the yellow mellow to save on water when needed.
@bettyir43028 сағат бұрын
@@sandrad518 Ours always was downhill until the authorities decided everyone had to move theirs. Never mind there wasn't any land up for sale. Thankfully, we found just barely enough land to move it and the $ to do it.

Using coupons could be a good strategy for building up storages.
@RainCountryHomestead10 сағат бұрын
Yes, it can be but it can also be deceptive if people are not paying attention to sizes and what they are buying.
@kleineroteHex6 сағат бұрын
My buying has changed much, what I buy there are no coupons 😂 only junk "food" has coupons now. Come to think they are now digital and I refuse to play that game.
@RainCountryHomestead6 сағат бұрын
@ Right, I had noticed this years ago that coupons were only for pre packaged foods I would never buy or for things I started making myself (laundry detergents, et cetera) for far less than that coupon could "save" me
