After my husband passed away suddenly in 2011 at the young age of 61, we had an earthquake and a hurricane . We lost power for 1 week! That is when I decided to get a whole house generator that is propane fueled. It is still going strong. It is a Generac brand. I have it maintained every year and it tests once a week. It goes on immediately, and has never failed me.

You may have mentioned this, but i didn't hear it if so, but when you think you may lose power, fill your bathtubs with water for flushing. I did that last Thursday night and we still have so much left. We're on Day 10 of no power here in Weaverville. We're seeing great strides in the recovery of our little communities, but it's a process. One day at a time. A couple of videos ago, i mentioned my friends who were missing in Marshall. Their bodies were found a couple of days ago near where their home washed away. The loss of life from this storm is just devastating. One more thing that I've really found handy is a flashlight that straps onto your head. You can walk about the house doing tasks with both hands instead of holding a flashlight or candle. Mine is rechargeable, but they slso make them with regular batteries.

The tub will slowly drain empty over a few days so I use unscented / brand new garbage bags in lieu of filling my tub directly with water. WNC here, Henderson County. We were without power and running well water for 2 weeks. The main item that occupied our days was water. I had been preparing for years and had, what I thought, plenty of water stored. We conserved as much as possible but very nearly ran out before power was restored. I am researching solar generators, Anker seems to be appropriate for our needs and provides for 240V to run our well pump and heat pump. I've increased our water stores but not yet to the 300+ gallons I made space for. During the days we volunteered at our church, the main item everyone desperately needed was water, lots of it. And don't think because you have city water that you'll be OK. That is actually worse than having a deep well. Forget about the one gallon per person/day, more realistic is 3 to 5 gallons per person/day.

Also, we have a composting toilet that has a urine separator (essential for preventing anaerobic bacteria from producing nasty outhouse smells), and we keep a bale of peat moss for covering solids. You don't need to waste water flushing. Bags of dry, compressed wipes can be easily stored. A small amount of water expands them. Each wipe is about the size of a soda bottle cap, so you can keep clean without having to store cases of toilet tissue.

We have 3 generators. One is a predator for the well, which requires 240v. It runs on gas and is very heavy. One is a Champion dual fuel for the trailer when the grid goes down. It can also do 240v and is heavy. The third is a small, portable Champion that runs on gas, is very efficient and can be used for tools or to run a single 15amp circuit for a refrigerator or freezer. It's very efficient on gas. In my opinion, the name of the game is backup, backup, and more backups. If you have the ability to store wood for cooking, and the ability to make a fire (use common sense and safety), you can make a big pot of stew that will keep for several days if you heat it to a boil twice a day and keep it covered. Obviously, you can't do a big freezer full unless you have lots of large kettles and the ability to keep a fire going, but you can certainly make use of a great deal of food that would otherwise spoil. I have plenty of empty canning jars and rings, and a pressure cooker that will allow me to can frozen meats as long as I have resources (wood or propane) for a fire. I have several chain saws, gas mix, bar oil and chains that will allow me to cut up scrap wood and branches. A rocket stove is the most efficient way to utilize small branches or wood scraps for cooking. It can be made with cement blocks. I have several large propane tanks and a large gasoline tank. Considering a tank for diesel to run the tractor. A portable solar generator with portable panels can be useful after the skies clear, but this takes a bit of calculation to decide what is truly useful, and they are expensive. I am l looking at Ham radio for communication, since cell phone is typically out during large disasters. One IBC can hold 250-350 gals of rain water. Bleach can be used to disinfect it. I am considering multiple storage scenarios. If nature takes out your house, you don't want to lose all your preps.
@thehomespunwifeАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing your tips and suggestions! In one of our previous homes we had a Buck Stove and made use of it for multiple things in winter storms, including cooking and boiling water. In our current house we have gas logs, which will provide some heat, even with the power out. We have our grill connected to our house gas, so it will always work as well, unless they shut off gas for an emergency. I learned yesterday that many long-range walkie talkies run off cell towers. I didn't realize that, so I am still learning. I know if you operate a ham radio, you're required to have a license. But that's also something I've thought about. Sounds like you have lots of skills and the tools necessary to get by in all kinds of disaster situations. God bless and stay safe out there!

Living in Florida and 100 miles from the coast, you don’t worry as much but problems still arise. Get a battery powered fan and charge it up when you first hear about the storm; during hurricane season keep your gas tank at least half fun (storm or not), have cash on hand, freeze Gatorade bottles filled with water to help fill up the freezer, then you can drink the water later. I think most others have already been mentioned. Basically it can be like rustic camping. I pray every day for strength and wisdom to know the way to handle these difficult situations.

@thehomespunwifeАй бұрын
I agree! What troubled me most was how totally unprepared most people are for catastrophic events. Despite being warned in advance, so many had no gas in their cars, no stored water, no canned foods put away, no flashlights or batteries for them, etc. Matches and lighters are great preps for emergencies, along with candles. Thanks for reminding us! Stay safe.

I learned a few things during the Northeast Great Blackout of 2003. We were powerless for a week, but still had water. The entire neighbourhood (its a small community) turned out to help wherever they could, for the elderly and unprepared. We had what you could consider a week long street party, using up meat and other perishables before they spoiled. Fortunately the weather was good, and nobody suffered. After that event, I invested in solar panels (on the roof) and many deep cycle batteries. Since then I've added a gas generator, (4500watt), two large Jackery solar generators, multiple power banks, flashlights/lanterns and rechargeable batteries. Also solar motion detector lights for outdoor security. Of course, we're always adding a bit at a time to our preps, but in the winter, we regularly heat our home with an airtight woodburning stove. (Have been for 15 years or so, now.) Thank you for sharing your experiences! ❤

@@thehomespunwife Yes, I have a half dozen of the solar motion detector lights mounted near the front and back doors, and a couple more on the garage, as well as two more in the garden. They're inexpensive and readily available from Amazon. The first ones I bought have lasted through two winters and are still going strong, but I will be buying more. I'm so glad I've been growing some veggies, too - potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, beets and beans, mostly. Wishing you all the best!!

Sherry, what a timely message for all of us to heed. We are preppers too. My husband invested in a lot of those long term storage foods, so they are tucked away in closets. We also have an emergency stove/heater that can be used indoors, along with the canned heat fuel cans. We have a 12-volt battery that can provide light, charging for phones and have small appliances plugged into it. We are currently struggling like you with trying to figure out what type of generator to purchase. The house that our younger daughter and her husband purchased came with a whole house attached generator. So it has really come in handy for them. It’s powered by propane. I love your ideas of having those large battery powered candles and those flat round lights. Also, the long range walkie talkies might be a good investment as Christmas gifts. We used a smaller gasoline generator for years, we would shut the main breaker off and run it straight into the house, it would not run the furnace or air conditioner. We bought a whole house 24,000 Generac about 3 years ago. It was around $7000 installed. We’ve only needed it once for 12 hours, the gas bill was $5.00 more. It gives great peace of mind if you are out of town and your power goes out it will take care of itself. After so many hours it needs the oil changed, the kit is $50.00. We have no regrets, I’m glad the power doesn’t go out.😂

You mentioned that you would like recommendations for generators.....Years ago I decided to buy a generator. I first looked at the standby models. For every brand, there were a few bad reviews that were really bad. The failure rate is probably very rare, but still a possibility. I need access to electricity for health needs, so I needed to feel confident with what I purchase. I ultimately bought the Honda EU 7000is, a portable generator which has an excellent reputation and enough power for most things in my house. I had an electrician install the wiring so that the generator plugs into an outdoor plug and connects to the main electrical panel in my house. I am happier with this choice than having a standby generator. Another option I like, that I might have chosen if I was aware of it...solar generators, which can also be charged through an ordinary electrical outlet. Some of those or systems with multiples of those are large enough for back up power to a house. Bluetti seems to be a good brand. No need for gasoline and oil changes! So glad to hear you made it through the hurricane OK!
@thehomespunwifeАй бұрын
Hi Stacey! Thank you for sharing about the generator you have. Honda's have a good reputation. So far we have looked at the Jackery, the EcoFlow, the Bluetti, the Pecron, a Honda, a Champion, a Westinghouse, and a Generac. One of the Champions we looked at has a tri-fuel option. It can use gas, propane, or natural gas. We could run a natural gas line from our house to the patio, where we could hook up the generator. There are lots of options but we are getting closer to picking one and running with it. Thanks again for your tips!

I live in Indiana. Our power outages are usually during an ice storm or blizzard. I’ve gotten by with just my tower kerosene heater which I could also cook on. Then I was hit by a tornado in May and my brother brought me a gasoline generator. It was a lifesaver. Since I’ve seen the aftermath of the hurricane I bought a solar generator large enough to run my freezer and refrigerator for at least an hour a day. If there is no sun I can charge it in an hour with the gasoline generator. I’ve had the small 500 watt battery pack because I cared for my dad and needed a way to adjust his bed in a power outage. That size comes in handy for charging phones too. I too have one of those tiny ones. I’ve always kept extra food. I was just raised that way. When we are expecting a power outage we also fill the bathtub to flush with. Always remember your water heater holds a lot of drinking water in an emergency, but besides the bathtub we fill big pots and jugs with drinking water ahead of a storm. I also have kerosene lamps my grandmother had, which was all she had back in the day. She didn’t get electricity in her house until shortly after I was born in 1956 and didn’t have indoor running water until I was a teen, so I learned so much from her and that way of life. She lived in the hills of Tennessee. I need to get my gasoline generator started before winter to make sure it runs when I need it to. I’m hearing now you need to start them once a month or so, and I haven’t tried to since the tornado a few years ago. Wish me luck! So glad you’re ok. God bless.

I am so glad you are doing okay. I am in the process of house hunting in the Mobile AL area and one of the first things I will be getting is a Generac generator that they install and it automatically comes on when the power goes out and runs your entire house, they run off of propane or natural gas and average price is around $6000. I know that is a lot of money to spend but the peace of mind as we get older will make it worth every penny. I also have a buddy heater and you can purchase an adapter kit that will allow you to use propane tanks so you don’t have to swap the little bottles so much. I have also discovered pour over coffee makers that are really nice because you can use your ground coffee.

We already have one natural gas line running out to our patio for our grill and we will probably have another one installed to hook up the generator, in case we ever need to use it as a fuel source. Even though we rarely experience outages, it will be nice to have this resource. I also learned that our cell phones can connect to satellite, making them work when cell towers are down. I just need to read up on how to do it.

I’m sorry, but hunkering down and sheltering in place is not the only scenario to prep for. I am an evacuee of two natural disasters, both required immediate evacuation. in both I experienced a complete loss of home and contents (and the second one my car too). I grabbed my family, pets, papers, car with gas, mobile food/water and cash were the most helpful. Both times we never returned. We declared bankruptcy very quickly, received help from FEMA (don’t listen to the false propaganda- FEMA is still there), moved to a new state and started over quickly. In both disasters, those that stayed hunkered down and tried to rebuild and recoup did not do well physically or mentally. So, my experience: leave, start fresh and spend your precious energy starting over. Sorry if this seems harsh, but the $2500.00 generator won’t help you when you see 30 ft. of moulton lava cover it or you watch it wash down the road in a flash flood.
@thehomespunwifeАй бұрын
I am sorry you have had to experience these disasters. My heart goes out to you. In this video, I was only speaking to the preparedness that I have tried to implement based on where I live. I am grateful for those who have commented and shared helpful tips as they pertain to additional areas and situations outside the scope of my experience. Also, FEMA may have helped quickly in many other disasters. But in WNC, that hasn't been our experience. We have family and friends throughout the Appalachian mountains, in several North Carolina counties which were the hardest hit. The groups that helped them are private organizations, such as Samaritan's Purse and the Cajun Navy. We were there ourselves within days and this was our experience too. Hopefully this disaster will help many of us get better prepared for various emergencies, including those that might require us to evacuate..

@@thehomespunwife our generators are gas powered but are looking into getting solar. My husband ran an oilfield service company with a machine shop so he knows all about machines. He only over the last few years learned about solar and is thinking about get solar for these batter tanks he has. We lived a month with no electricity without suffering (or complaining, lol). Thank you for this beautiful channel.

Good to have a cheap battery tester to weed out weak or dead batteries. Cheap ham radios are available that carry police scanners and lots of communities have ham radio enthusiasts, people are so helpful. I am intending to learn how to learn ham radio, good communication tool.

We love the 3000 lumens battery lanterns. I think i got them on Amazon. It lit up a room. It adjusted 1000, 2000 to 3000. I plan on ordering 2 more. The power supply is wonderful, too. We keep ours charged. We want 2 more of those, too, for vehicles. You could be traveling and need it.

Solar lights would be another option. My mum is frugal and has garden lights that she charges outside during the day and brings in at night to see so that she doesn't have lights on in the house. As for generators, I would look at Bluetti, they tend to work with KZbinrs so maybe look in that direction. You can start with a power bank and add to it as you can financially. Many Blessings from Australia.

The solar phone chargers are great but I prefer luminAID solar lamps. They can charge your phones and light up a room.
