PLEASE PRAY FOR WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA AND ALL THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN IMPACTED BY HURRICANE HELENE. ♥️
OUR HEARTS ARE BROKEN FOR EVERY PERSON WHO IS HURTING. 💔
THANK YOU, FRIENDS.
In today's video, I talk about some things I learned about our level of preparedness as we went through Hurricane Helene here in the North Carolina Foothills.
I failed to share that the battery banks I show in the video are solar and can be charged by placing them in the sun.

Thank you for this. I’m currently 16 years old, living in New York, and hearing the news about Hurricane Helene was devastating. Even though hurricanes don’t typically affect us here, your words really opened my eyes. We do experience a lot of harsh winter storms in New York, so this perspective really helped me. Thank you.❤

I am so glad that I was privileged to see your video as Floridians we are facing another hurricane soon . I lost a home some 20 years ago but it was from a tornado that spun off of the hurricane. It was a bad experience but nothing compared to the loss of this more recent storm. God was so precious to my husband and me during the stress of the days that followed. I appreciate your steps of preparation in this project. Blessings!

Thanks for this video Sherry. We live just north of Asheville and just west of Marshall. The devastation is still hard to comprehend. Our home and family are safe, as well as the two churches my husband pastors, one being in Asheville very near the River Arts District. We appreciate your prayers for all those who have experienced devastation. Disasters like this bring out the best and worst in people and I'm happy to say the overwhelming support from people who have reached to others has warmed our hearts. Generosity and kindness are alive and well here. There are many first responders who have come to help, traveling great distances to do so. We appreciate their caring hearts and capable hands and pray God will keep them safe and bless them. Yes, we have learned how to be prepared if anything like this happens again!

I'm so glad to hear you are safe, Donna...and also your churches. Praise the Lord! The scenes from the River Arts District made my heart sink. We were in Asheville this past Thursday to help family. We travelled on Sweeten Creek and Tunnel Road and were happy to see the water had receded in those areas that had been severely flooded earlier. We also experienced kindness and generosity while there and it was a joy to see that kind of spirit amongst the people. Continued blessings to you!

Having cash on hand during emergencies is very helpful, something I have learned from past emergencies (2 major earthquakes and civil unrest). Every disaster and/or emergency has the same common element, people helping others. 💕

Thank you for mentioning cash. I totally forgot to bring that up in the video but it's important. We were fortunate to have cash on hand after this hurricane because for days, no stores in our area would take anything but cash. And yes...people helping each other is vital. Such a beautiful thing in times of crisis. Thanks again!

You may have mentioned this, but i didn't hear it if so, but when you think you may lose power, fill your bathtubs with water for flushing. I did that last Thursday night and we still have so much left. We're on Day 10 of no power here in Weaverville. We're seeing great strides in the recovery of our little communities, but it's a process. One day at a time. A couple of videos ago, i mentioned my friends who were missing in Marshall. Their bodies were found a couple of days ago near where their home washed away. The loss of life from this storm is just devastating. One more thing that I've really found handy is a flashlight that straps onto your head. You can walk about the house doing tasks with both hands instead of holding a flashlight or candle. Mine is rechargeable, but they slso make them with regular batteries.

The tub will slowly drain empty over a few days so I use unscented / brand new garbage bags in lieu of filling my tub directly with water. Typically before a hurricane I fill three large garbage bags (placed in my tub as I fill them) to collect over 60 + gallons of fresh water. Available not just to flush but clean for drinking water.

After my husband passed away suddenly in 2011 at the young age of 61, we had an earthquake and a hurricane . We lost power for 1 week! That is when I decided to get a whole house generator that is propane fueled. It is still going strong. It is a Generac brand. I have it maintained every year and it tests once a week. It goes on immediately, and has never failed me.

To be honest, I was surprised at how many people here said they didn't have flashlights or extra water. One good thing that can come from a bad storm like this is that people get a little more prepared for future outages. Thank you for your prayers, not only for us, but for others around the world. Also, we have a composting toilet that has a urine separator (essential for preventing anaerobic bacteria from producing nasty outhouse smells), and we keep a bale of peat moss for covering solids. You don't need to waste water flushing. Bags of dry, compressed wipes can be easily stored. A small amount of water expands them. Each wipe is about the size of a soda bottle cap, so you can keep clean without having to store cases of toilet tissue.

We have 3 generators. One is a predator for the well, which requires 240v. It runs on gas and is very heavy. One is a Champion dual fuel for the trailer when the grid goes down. It can also do 240v and is heavy. The third is a small, portable Champion that runs on gas, is very efficient and can be used for tools or to run a single 15amp circuit for a refrigerator or freezer. It's very efficient on gas. In my opinion, the name of the game is backup, backup, and more backups. If you have the ability to store wood for cooking, and the ability to make a fire (use common sense and safety), you can make a big pot of stew that will keep for several days if you heat it to a boil twice a day and keep it covered. Obviously, you can't do a big freezer full unless you have lots of large kettles and the ability to keep a fire going, but you can certainly make use of a great deal of food that would otherwise spoil. I have plenty of empty canning jars and rings, and a pressure cooker that will allow me to can frozen meats as long as I have resources (wood or propane) for a fire. I have several chain saws, gas mix, bar oil and chains that will allow me to cut up scrap wood and branches. A rocket stove is the most efficient way to utilize small branches or wood scraps for cooking. It can be made with cement blocks. I have several large propane tanks and a large gasoline tank. Considering a tank for diesel to run the tractor. A portable solar generator with portable panels can be useful after the skies clear, but this takes a bit of calculation to decide what is truly useful, and they are expensive. I am l looking at Ham radio for communication, since cell phone is typically out during large disasters. One IBC can hold 250-350 gals of rain water. Bleach can be used to disinfect it. I am considering multiple storage scenarios. If nature takes out your house, you don't want to lose all your preps.

Thanks for sharing your tips and suggestions! In one of our previous homes we had a Buck Stove and made use of it for multiple things in winter storms, including cooking and boiling water. In our current house we have gas logs, which will provide some heat, even with the power out. We have our grill connected to our house gas, so it will always work as well, unless they shut off gas for an emergency. I learned yesterday that many long-range walkie talkies run off cell towers. I didn't realize that, so I am still learning. I know if you operate a ham radio, you're required to have a license. But that's also something I've thought about. Sounds like you have lots of skills and the tools necessary to get by in all kinds of disaster situations. God bless and stay safe out there!

I love the part of keeping our hearts prepared. It made me think of the lady who lost her parents and young son in the flood waters. She and her sister had been brought up to memorize scripture. You have probably seen the video of her talking about being on the roof of their home with her parents and little boy. He loved superheroes and she told him this was the thing that made superheroes. They talked about Jesus and the roof eventually broke apart and she lost her parents and her son. She heard him calling out to Jesus as he was swept away. Without our faith in God, it would be difficult to get through the storms of life.❤✝️ So glad y’all did not suffer much damage.

If you pay for disney plus you can download movies and tv epsiodes to watch offline 3. Have a way to charge phone without electricity 4. Have way to hear weather and news without internet 5. Flashlights lanterns 6. Stock pile food and water 7. Books to read during day and board games cards 8. Fill up your gas tank when ypu know weather is coming 9. Move car up to higher land it might survive. Saw a lady mention thats how she saved her car. 10. Stock up on medicine. And batteries. I have a diabetic child who has hearing aids. We used a smaller gasoline generator for years, we would shut the main breaker off and run it straight into the house, it would not run the furnace or air conditioner. We bought a whole house 24,000 Generac about 3 years ago. It was around $7000 installed. We’ve only needed it once for 12 hours, the gas bill was $5.00 more. It gives great peace of mind if you are out of town and your power goes out it will take care of itself. After so many hours it needs the oil changed, the kit is $50.00. We have no regrets, I’m glad the power doesn’t go out.😂

We live in south Florida and own a red Honda portable generator, it was about $700 years ago, we do like it. We bought a small unit window air conditioner that we keep boxed in the garage to be able to cool off a small room to sleep in. Before a hurricane I would brew a big pot of coffee to have made already. I recommend that people keep bike helmets in their safe room (windowless) so you could protect your head. I would definitely have cash on hand, gas for generator, you can use pool water to flush your toilet, canned food, but the most important of all is to help your neighbors. The only storm we dealt with was Wilma in 2005. We live in a planned community by the Everglades so we really just experienced minor roof damage and lost running water and electricity for about two days that felt like 10 days because of the heat. Our community has underground power lines so most people did not lose power but for some reason our small section did. God bless all those dealing with natural disasters 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🌸💙

Hi Wanda! Thank you for sharing such a great list of helps during storms and outages! I didn't think of mentioning cash but that is so important! We did have cash but so many don't keep cash at home. I was going to get a solar panel but decided instead to get some extra gas so I can recharge my power station on my car if needed. I also have a small dorm refrigerator that I can plug into my power station.

Sherry, what a timely message for all of us to heed. We are preppers too. My husband invested in a lot of those long term storage foods, so they are tucked away in closets. We also have an emergency stove/heater that can be used indoors, along with the canned heat fuel cans. We have a 12-volt battery that can provide light, charging for phones and have small appliances plugged into it. We are currently struggling like you with trying to figure out what type of generator to purchase. The house that our younger daughter and her husband purchased came with a whole house attached generator. So it has really come in handy for them. It’s powered by propane. I love your ideas of having those large battery powered candles and those flat round lights. Also, the long range walkie talkies might be a good investment as Christmas gifts. Thank you so much for this informative video. So helpful! ❤-Brenda

For lighting I buy Aootek solar motion sensor lights on amazon for all over my yard for security. I have had great luck with that brand. If power is out I can just go get a couple off the fence. They can be set to be motion or set to be on constant. I have Ryobi leaf blower and multiple recharge batteries. I found they make a small portable shop fan that uses their batteries. Made HUGE difference in the house when I lost power 5 days in mid summer. Your phone battery bank looks like the ones I have that can be charged by plugging in to regular power - or will quickly recharge setting in sun. Thanks for the video! Edit - I see in description you just forgot to mention battery bank can recharge by solar.

Great ideas! Yes we have a gas powered generator and we are so happy we have it. I think we've only needed it once in the years we have had it but we had a bad storm last summer and our power was out about 24 hours. We were able to power our fridges and chest freezer and then I could unplug it from one of those and turn on a box fan and keep cool. It actually felt cooler outside in the shade than inside so I stayed out there awhile then came in later and plugged in the fan for awhile. Then later that day the power came back on. It was well worth it as we keep 3 fridges and a chest freezer full and we stocked a lot of organic meat. I didn't want to lose that. I also have a lot of canned food, water on hand, a straw you can filter water with if needed (we live right next to a river so it could come in handy) and we also use the shelf stable milk. We have a tornado shelter we rarely use, it cost a lot but I've never been sorry we got it. I want one of the little camp stoves. We do have a propane grill that has eyes so I could cook on that as well. I think the camp stove would be simpler.

@@thehomespunwife we have several gas cans and this particular storm I mentioned was predicted so I made sure hubby had all the cans filled up. It may be he keeps them full anyway...not too sure. I also keep my cars mostly filled up, I don't have a way to charge my phone but I can charge it in my car without running the car. That is provided that the car isn't swept away in a flood that is!! Hopefully not. Also you could plug it into the generator. We had it hooked up to a long extension cord and I could plug in several things at a time, it lets you know if you have enough power to charge all the things you have hooked up. He said ours can have 4 things plugged in at once. I'm sure you can get one that hooks up more stuff. Anyway we had it running probably 10 hours bc we didn't get it going until the next morning. It didn't use much gas in that amount of time. Not sure how much gas you would need for several days though. I would think 4 or 5 good sized gas cans would cover you for several days. I def need more water stored! I used to have more and I got rid of it! Dumb!

You mentioned that you would like recommendations for generators.....Years ago I decided to buy a generator. I first looked at the standby models. For every brand, there were a few bad reviews that were really bad. The failure rate is probably very rare, but still a possibility. I need access to electricity for health needs, so I needed to feel confident with what I purchase. I ultimately bought the Honda EU 7000is, a portable generator which has an excellent reputation and enough power for most things in my house. I had an electrician install the wiring so that the generator plugs into an outdoor plug and connects to the main electrical panel in my house. I am happier with this choice than having a standby generator. Another option I like, that I might have chosen if I was aware of it...solar generators, which can also be charged through an ordinary electrical outlet. Some of those or systems with multiples of those are large enough for back up power to a house. Bluetti seems to be a good brand. No need for gasoline and oil changes! So glad to hear you made it through the hurricane OK!

Hi Stacey! Thank you for sharing about the generator you have. Honda's have a good reputation. So far we have looked at the Jackery, the EcoFlow, the Bluetti, the Pecron, a Honda, a Champion, a Westinghouse, and a Generac. One of the Champions we looked at has a tri-fuel option. It can use gas, propane, or natural gas. We could run a natural gas line from our house to the patio, where we could hook up the generator. There are lots of options but we are getting closer to picking one and running with it. Thanks again for your tips!

The system filters out viruses, bacteria, and chlorine. The company is working on an additional filter that will remove fluoride and arsenic, as well. We keep two Sawyer Minis in our emergency storage. These "straws' are filters that can be used in creeks, streams, and natural waters. Each mini will filter 100,000 gallons of water. They are lightweight and fit in your palm, making them easy to take with you. In addition to these things, we keep cases of bottled water and also gallon containers of purified water. During the recent storm, we were able to give water away to our loved ones from our emergency stockpile. I was so happy we were able to help.
