I completed the Ten Tors in 1975. My first proper expedition. Being in the CCF we used army kit. Canvas bergans, canvas bivvies with wooden poles. Boots dms, baggy old denims, caps comforters and hexy blocks cookers. It`s amazing to see how good the modern kit is now. Makes things so much more comfortable. Now I`m an old git, with a life of physical work and endurance training behind me, my joints are stiff and a bit worn. If I slept on the ground without a campbed I wouldn`t be able to bend until about teatime. With a campbed I can do up my boots by NAAFI break time. Luckily, I own a bit of land with a stream and a wood and have my own small camping area. So I can do the bushcraft stuff then nip indoors without having to walk miles back home with my hips killing me. Love the channel. Keep it up.

Thanks Harry, l appreciate it. Yes the kit has come on leaps and bounds, even in my lifetime. Did you join up after leaving school?

@@PreparedPathfinder It`s very beautiful in the hinterland like 1950`s Devon. I spend my days cycling around the minor battlefields and memorials. From Beny Bocage to the Falaise Gap. Fascinating history. Every few miles I come across something, maybe a small memorial to a Typhoon pilot, or a flag flying in memory.

You gave some really good advice here, cheers. Did you know that Potassium Permanganate can also be used to sterilise water? Just three or four little crystals will treat one litre of water. Disolve the crystals in the water so that it turns a pale pink colour, leave for 30 minutes and the water will be safe to drink. It's exactly what the dentist used to give you to swill your mouth out with. The great thing about KMnO4 is that, weight for weight, it will sterilise way more water than purification tablets, considering that one tablet is required for each litre of water - a couple of grams will maybe sterilise a hundred litres.... or more! A concentrated solution will work as a disinfectant to treat cuts. I've used this many times in the woods - a drop or two on the pad of a plaster works great.

Cheers Paul. Roger, yes l did mention using Pot Perm for purifying water. It’s a great survival item for lots of reasons.

Great vid. as usual. Re: Layers. Can I make a recommendation: Marino wool. Brilliant stuff. It wicks wonderfully well and does not smell (so quickly) as the well man-made fibres do. One tip though. If you get a base layer in marino, always get a large size. Even if you have the body of Lina Zavaroni (that dates me!), get a large. Because, after a few washings, it will certainly be a snug fit. Occasionally hand wash in olive oil to restore a little of the size. I also have a shemagh and buff/headcover in marino. You really can't beat the stuff. Keep up the great work. You make the best videos on KZbin mate.

Hi, thankyou, yes I have a few items in Merino wool, and yes it's great stuff hey? Thankyou for your comments, I really appreciate it!

For washing wool items, try wilko wool & silk, or wilko pure liquid soapflakes - also unscented & inexpensive, or use your normal shampoo or shampoo & conditioner mix (don't use shower gel or body wash). Less is best for the amount of liquid, mix it well in the water, then add the garments. For washing the items, wash on a delicate or wool cycle at 40 degC max, or a NO spin cycle. You can also wash them in a bath or sink with shampoo / or the liquid soap. Do NOT spin or wring, (that is what shrinks it - by the fibres rubbing together - ie felting the fibres) either walk on it in the bath or gently do CPR if in a sink. Drain and rinse a few times until all the soap is out, or you can put it between layers of a towel and roll it, to get the water out, remove the item and wring the towel, & repeat. Do NOT tumble dry, it will shrink .... To dry, lay it as flat as you can, in a warm place like an airing cupboard, or on a rack, or in an emergency you can wear it and it will still keep you warm. (acts like a wet suit). Hope this helps.
