I say it's time to get stuck in to another big project. It starts with lost of digging and shifting but it's worth getting these bits right to make everything else a little better in the long run. Lots more garden action on the way!

Do you have an endless budget tim?? The amount of oak you use is nuts

I wish. Nope not at all, we just save and spend on the house and materials rather than shiny new things. Besides, 8 oak sleepers is £240 and the wall can be done in a day. I could lay foundations, lay blocks, render or face that and perhaps save a few pounds but it would take me a week. 👍

This video has encouraged me to build my own raised wall. Will be my first major outside DIY effort Only thing I have had really struggled with is how to get a straight line parallel to the house without an equally straight 'landmark' to use as a reference point. Pythagoras 3,4,5 method seems to be a popular approach. Any other ideas?

This might be too late but I would run two lines from the house using a large square, like Tim had in the video, then run a line between between these an equal distance from the house. If it's a fair distance from the house you don't need to be super accurate as you won't be able to tell.

I'm going to be building a raised deck with some planters (Oak sleepers of course!). Although it doesn't matter for the interlocking sleepers, what am I best using for the in-ground posts under the deck as concerned about them rotting out as you say?

I'm about to start my first sleeper wall project. Decided to give it a go myself after watching your videos, so thanks for the encouragement! I'm planning on laying them on the short 150 face, rather than the 250 , so I'm going to cut some sleepers and put them in the ground to support. How can I best protect these posts from rotting in the ground? Also, my longest part of the wall will be 9m long, how often would you recommend I put a support post in? Would 1 post every ~2 meters ok?

Looking forward to the rest. We are planning on leveling a small area of garden with sleepers to put artificial grass down, so it will be good to get some tips.

Nice episode Tim, just about to start on my pathway around the summer house. Where do you get your oak sleepers from? As I was watching I said to myself...nice socks Jo! Then immediately you mentioned them. Spooky! Looking forward to next episode. Hope you are all keeping well.

How long a lifespan due you envisage for the oak 'sleepers you installed in the other video'? I'm toying between different types of hard border edging for a gravel/lawn interface... Thanks

Great video mate. I’m planning on digging 4 holes for 100x100mm posts for a pergola. You said in a few years your posts will rot. So how should I keep my pergola posts from rotting ?
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple Жыл бұрын
Depends on the timber but one option is concrete steel bases in and sit posts to those. good timber in concrete should still last ok though especially if you slope the concrete away at base.

@@TheRestorationCouple Hi there. Do you mean to concrete a post Spike into a concrete base, and then place the timber post into the Spike?
@diyfarm

@@rupindersharma5215 either a concrete in anchor or a Simpson type bolt down plate that leaves the post slightly off pad.

@@diyfarm Thank you. I just searched for a Simpson Post Base, they look very similar to a SABREFIX BOLT-DOWN POST SUPPORT (Screwfix). I suppose they all do the same kind of job...

People watching this please don't think you need geotextile membrane under a patio. It's a complete waste of time. If your sub base is compacted properly it'll be just fine and you'll have no problems.
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 4 жыл бұрын
True, depends on your situation, if it's decent undisturbed ground and well compacted type1 then fine, (we did our main patio without) As this is poor ground, gravel finish and built over a metropolis of weeds, its made sense, plus stops soil getting through to oak. That said, if I was doing a patio again, if you are spending 100's or 1000's on aggregates and natural stone, spending £50 for belts and braces doesn't sting that much.

Just out of interest, do you get commissions from Magazines to cover these projects? I used to do a lot on Interior/Exterior Plastering for a local couple. Hubby was a Photographer and each project they started had enormous commission checks forwarded from some top-of-the-range Magazines. Seemed like a jolly good arrangement as they got their Victorian House and Garden done up for FREE!! - PLUS! a jolly good income .... What's not to like there? :-)
