question, why did you lay the base sleeper in concrete? Wouldnt that accelerate the rotting in the base sleeper. I have a job coming up where i was thinking of using chippings/shingle to sit the base sleeper on to enable drainage prolonging the life of the sleeper. Please advise which would be the best method

If you’re just having one sleeper then you can lay on the ground or chippings or whatever you choose. If you’re putting a number on top of each other you need a solid base foundation. I would recommend coating regularly one a year with timber preservatives. That will give you a lot more life.

Thanks for the video - very helpful. Did you fix the base sleeper for the wall to the concrete? If not is the concrete bed enough to stop the wall from being forced over?

The bottom sleeper was fixed the concrete

My only comment is that you really should use a tanking membrane behind the sleepers rather than let the soil touch them. They will be fine for a couple of years but they will start to rot on the back from never drying out and you can get mould growth on the fronts. As you have laid the sleepers down you will get a bit more longevity out of them. The membrane is dimpled so that earth is held 3 to 5 mm from the sleepers and water can drain down the back so they dry.
