We are under a winter Weather Advisory and expecting 4 to 7 inches of snow over the next 2 days. So today we are going to make sure the homestead is prepared for the snow. We are going to add some wind protection for the billy goats, make sure the generator runs okay, cut kindling, and bring firewood up to the house. This is also the first Day I am wearing a new Pair of Ariat Hybrid Rancher Boots. I have worn them all day and they fit great and was comfortable to wear.

When I was a child, about 8 or so, I lived with my Granpa one winter. His house had a coal furnace and I was assigned the chore of breaking up the coal chunks and splitting the kindling with a hatchet. I'm now 75, Grandpa has long passed, and I still enjoy splitting kindling. No one heats with coal anymore but on the fee occasions when I get a whiff on a cold winter morning it brings back fond memories of those days in my youth.

I have been wearing Ariats for YEARS! The best pair I ever had was insulated with Thinsulate (I think that's what it's called). I was saddened when I finally had to retire them after 5 years and I could find the same thing. Don't know if they discontinued them or I just couldn't find them where I normally bought my boots. They are all around useful boots. I can work around my homestead and ride my horse without having to change my footwear. I've tried others, but always come back to Ariat.

I grew up on a farm in Central New York State. During the winter months, we prepared cords of wood for our fire and to sell. We made maple surup. You bring back sweet memories of my childhood but also memories of the hard, very very hard work...day after day.

You cannot imagine how I envy you ... if a Christian can do that! Gorgeous home, beautiful lake, hard work. I cannot even walk without two trail sticks and a lot of pain from five blown discs. Cheers from always too warm, Florida ...

The great dirty, wet boots and shoe PROBLEM....know it well...! I resolved the very same problem with the wife and the boots by building a insulated box just outside the door for them to stow in and then added two 4" dryer vents at each end of the box and routed then from the inside of the house with vent covers inside and the open pipe end out through the wall to inside the box. Took AC power from wall switch for outside porch lights and added a wall outlet down near the floor to control two small 4" fans to pull warn air out of the house to help dry and keep the foot wear for the next morning. Did add a 110 vac snow boot dryer/warmer later. Added a wall switch later with power on indicator lite as a reminder the boot system was on... So at end of day boots off brush clean, put in foot locker porch lights on. Lights off at bedtime and back on first up in AM...for pre-heat while dressing , making coffee and breakfast and game plan for day... Outcome was happy wife, happy boots and happy feet in warm dry boots and a second cup of coffee out the door for warm hands and overall improved outlook on the day FYI DIY. Oh and the following year added a mud room on at back door and stopped all traffic through the house....! and you thought it ended with foot locker !?!? Hell "NO" that took a mud room a bathroom, a second set of washer/dryer in the new bathroom, and a work clothes closet with split into two parts one side for washed/clean and the other side for dirty, wet smelly BUT not ready to wash as one more layer of all of the last mentioned was still needed. That side had a fan powered roof vent. a large shower stall with title floor and drain pan for drip-n-dry moments or just plan hose down..... did not hear much after that other then your hole needs a sweep, vac and wipe down please.

hello from the Netherlands . I have enjoy your film .. how I keep the wood is in big wooden boxes and so heavy that I lift the box with a tractor and drive them home . the pros is I keep the wood in and do not lift them in the car . it saves a lot of work . time . what is possible when you have a lot of room or you make room you can drive the box into your home next to your fire place .just open the door and place the box behind the door . so than the wood is in the house and you do not have to go every time to go outside to pick up the wood . and so you keep the heat inside your home ….goodluck

I've been using Ariat boots for several years now. Love 'em. They're comfortable and seem to go almost forever. And I wear them every day, all day. Geez, I sound like a commercial. But I'm a believer. Same story as you, five or six years ago I got tired of lacing up my boots. Our local Smith and Edwards boot dealer told me the same thing, the Ariats were the most popular, so I bought 'em. And went back a couple of times when they finally wore out. I use the steel-toe version since I'm using handling heavy stuff. So I'm right with you.

The nice looking box for the large bags of feed should be on 2 foot tall legs & the front section can be cut and attached to the top door, so they both open together. Devise a way so it can stay open/up while you are using it. 👍 Keep up the great videos.

@Bobby Brady I agree, it's disgusting. But I have been married to the man for over 40 years. We have had many "discussions" over the issue. When he was playing baseball he would walk through the house and up the stairs with his cleats on, on my hardwood floors! You could follow the trail he left behind of clods of dirt. 😡 In my books, it's totally ignorant to be that thoughtless.

Honey Hollow Homestead it’s a shame he doesn’t care enough to accommodate your wish to take his shoes off instead of tracking dirt in the house. I’ll bet he would have something to say if you refused to clean up his mess and let hi live in it. But then you would have to live in the mess too. Smh!

JudithB We bought a wood splitter this fall and there is a lot of pieces that come off as we are splitting. I put a plastic 30 gal trash can beside it and we threw the pieces in it and then I raked the rest of the stuff under the splitter for the can too. I keep this in my barn and use it for kindling. and the mess is already cleaned up around the splitter!!! Very handy!! Looks like you need a boot rack by the door!! LOL

Your home is so beautiful and I love all that snow! My husband and I were in Park City, Utah early last December, for a few days. In the middle of walking around the old town area, there was some snow from night before, I stopped to pick up a handful of snow, it’s so soft (glad I was wearing gloves though, so cold!)... I just packed as much I could mall a ball at threw it at my hubby! We threw a huge scoop of snow at me but it just flew all over but landed all over me! Lol It was so much fun, since we’re from central California, a lot of farm land outside where we live, we rarely ever get snow and so far, not even any rain, maybe rain in the Spring. I just love snow but I’m glad we can drive to the coast anytime we want and get a Winter tan between December and March! Lol Thanks for sharing, love your wife’s sense of humor! 😁

They don't look like much but trust me you will find a million uses for them on a farm and even use them buying bulk items at Goodwill bins for a part time resale business. kindling: when you saw wood you yield saw dust. gather and keep it contained for building fires (most people light their fires/heaters with a propane hand torch). scoop a little pile into your heater (amid ship) and stack smaller wood on top as you would if using "kindling". your fire is built and easily enlarged........g
